SLUTFACE – ” Kill ‘Em With Kindness “
Posted: January 29, 2016 in MUSICTags: Haley Shea, Norway, Slutface

Now that they’ve admitted liking Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance, Norway’s Slutface can get on with the business of making mainstream garage/glam/pop rock songs that are t-a-i-l-o-r-m-a-d-e to takeover radio stations the world over.
Just check the hooks on this latest one, which is the follow-up to last year’s unmistakably infectious ‘Shave My Head’.
‘Kill Em All With Kindness’ is another bratty gem that owes a lot to The Black Parade’s and Pretty Odd’s of this world: it’s knowing enough to chuck in pop culture refs every twenty seconds (air guitars, line cutting VIP’s and Time magazine all get shouts), while singer Haley Shea’s vocals are where Gwen Stefani and Mary Timony meet. Excitingly, it sounds massive. God knows what people will make of the band name if they do break through, but if the tunes continue to be as strong as this they’ll find it difficult not to be loved.

One of 2016’s most exciting new bands Slutface have announced details of a UK and European tour.
The Norwegian exports are heading this way for a run of dates kicking off in their home country before rolling into the UK at the end of February.

06 – Trondheim Calling
25 – Shipping Forecast, Liverpool
26 – Headrow House, Leeds

On stage, they’re an explosion of raw youthful exuberance, riot-grrrl bravado and general don’t-give-a-fuckery. This is a tour you don’t want to miss, as we’re in no doubt they’ll explode later this year.
Oh, if you’re new to the band and want the name explaining…
“We want you to think about female sexuality and what it means to be a ‘slut’, the way we portray women in music and in popular culture,” singer Haley Shea “We’re really not dicks – we just want you to think about women more than you do.”

AURORA – ” Tiny Desk Concert “
Posted: November 21, 2015 in MUSICTags: Aurora, Norway, singer songwriter, Tiny Desk Concert
The girl behind the christmas John Lewis advert, Aurora , her vocals and style seem so new to her that each note, and each hand gesture accompanying each note, seemed like a discovery and an adventure for the singer. She was 18 when she first came to New York City, and now the Norwegian singer is 19; take a look at this Tiny Desk Concert, and her sense of innocence and discovery still rings as true as ever.
Aurora has just one EP and some singles out so far, and ever since seeing her at CMJ in 2014, I’ve been eager to hear what she offers on her debut album. Due early next year, we should finally hear it — as well as more chances to see Aurora live, as she plans on touring soon.
Running With The Wolves is available now.
Set List
- “Runaway”
- “Murder Song (5, 4, 3, 2, 1)”
- “Running With The Wolves”
BROR FORSGREN – ” In a Time When God Was One “
Posted: November 6, 2015 in MUSICTags: Bror Forsgren, Narcissus, Norway, singer songwriter
Bror Forsgren is a Norwegian 34-year-old who was previously a member of the Lionheart Brothers, Jaga Jazzist and Silence the Foe. New album Narcissus is his solo debut, and it is an ambitious work with an art deco-inspired cover and music that is grandiose and baroque. The album’s themes are innocence and faith, and the arrangements are suitably symphonic. “I’ve always dreamed of making an album with grand orchestration, while managing to keep the music timeless,” he says, citing the solo output of Scott Walker as the sort of “velvety pop music” that he wanted to create on Narcissus. “My vision for this album has been to create a work where my natural pop habitat melts together with the classical and the modern.” Other influences include Jens Lekman, Brian Eno and Ennio Morricone, while one track, I Need Something New,
Bror Forsgren himself describes the album like this:
– I’ve always dreamed of making an album with grand orchestration, whilst managing to keep the music timeless. I’m a big fan of Scott Walker and loves his ability to intertwine velvety pop music and modern composition. My vision for this album has been to create a work where my natural pop habitat melts together with the classical and the modern.
Already on the opening track, «Waiting For That Holy Music», it’s clear that this isn’t just any album. Its musical landscape evokes the previously mentioned Scott Walker and other greats like The Beach Boys, Brian Eno and Ennio Morricone. But «Narcissus» is by no means an exercise in the name of pastiche art. The way Bror Forsgren takes elements from these greats and builds his own sonic cathedral, shows that he’s an impressively confident artist with a clear vision.
The album’s nine songs form a fascinating musical journey where we join Forsgren down to the deepest valleys. Luckily, you might say, there’s also light at the end of the tunnel. In several ways this anecdote from Bror Forsgren’s trip from Oslo to Trondheim to record TrondheimSolistene, illustrates the album very well.
– I arrived early at the railway station, but because of delays and technical problems with the airport express train, I had to take a taxi to Gardermoen airport. Five minutes before my flight’s departure time, I arrived at the airport and ran through the security check. If I didn’t catch this flight, the whole recording, lots of money and the album I’d been working on for two years would go down the drain. When I arrived at gate 23, I discovered that the flight had been moved to gate 19. I ran the long way to that gate, but when I finally arrived there, the gate had only just closed. I tearfully explained my situation to one of the officials at the gate, who despite strict regulations let me come on board. And thus «Narcissus» became a reality, Forsgren says.
In other words it’s been a long, difficult and, at times, dark process. But on the other hand, with «Narcissus» in his back pocket, Bror Forsgren has landed on his own two feet. However, he gladly admits that his many supporters and musicians have been invaluable.
ANNA of The NORTH – ” The Dreamer “
Posted: October 5, 2015 in MUSICTags: Anna Of the North, Electro-Pop, Norway
This newest release from Anna Of The North is an ethereal sounding track that feels a bit like Brooklyn’s Wet meets a lower-key Chvrches there’s a sense of mounting energy and boldness as the track goes on, growing into something that generates enough heat to melt the ice. It makes sense once you know that Anna of the North is a collaboration between north and south Norway’s Anna Lotterud and New Zealand born producer Brady Daniell-Smith, who met in Melbourne. They made their first blip on the music radar in 2014 with the track “Sway” and then follow Up “Oslo” in early 2015 and now a third blip is here but it’s more of a roar, cementing Anna of the North right onto our festival wish list for 2016.
SLUTFACE – ” Were Just OK ” EP
Posted: September 14, 2015 in MUSICTags: Norway, Slutface, Were Just Okay EP

We discovered that this band may well just be the best new band we’ve heard in a long, long time.
In the sweltering and blinding midday Oslo sun, frontwoman Haley Shea sings about “bright lights shining in my eyes, take me away from the edge of the stage”, we can relate. With the riot-grrrl attitude of Sleater-Kinney met with the pure rush of Blood Red Shoes, the emerging Norwegian quartet Slutface throw out infectious pop punk riffs and irresistible choruses that demand every minute of your attention.
Using every inch of the stage and more, Haley brings her punky Brody Dalle approach square into your face for the brilliant ‘Bad Party’ from 2014 EP We’re Just OK. Telling us the story of going to a guys house, and finding him there with another girl, she launches herself into the crowd, surfing like a pro.
‘Call To Arms’ begins with the caveat that we must sing along, not a problem. Calling upon the audience to participate in the show as much as possible, being a passive listener is not an option. Saving all their energy for the furious closer of ‘Angst’, the result is pure a adrenaline-filled full stop from a band who you’re soon to hear so, so much from.
We have seen the future, and its name is Slutface.
The MEGAPHONIC THRIFT – ” Interlopers “
Posted: September 13, 2015 in FESTIVALS, MUSICTags: liverpool international Festival of Psychedelica, Norway, The Megaphonic Thrift

“Interlopers” is the new single from The Megaphonic Thrift’s new album “Sun Stare Sound”. Proving that the festival’s international sobriquet is no idle boast, The Megaphonic Thrift continue the rich tradition of Scandinavian psychedelia that has been a feature of previous PZYK incarnations. Hailing from Bergen, Norway, the quartet specialize in a driving sonic assault that tests the outer limits of psych pop. At one recent gig, the NME described The Megaphonic Thrift’s output as “face-meltingly intense”.

For a lot of new artists, there needs to be something uniquely new to be exciting. But when you think about it, a lot of the lasting talents have a timeless quality that doesn’t depend on the trends and modern styles of the contemporary soundscape.
New York-based Norwegian artist OKAY KAYA doesn’t need to sound like right now to be one of the best newcomers in music. She’s already made some great first steps and surrounded herself with good people like Rodaidh McDonald (producer for King Krule, The xx, and Sampha) and Tobias Jesso Jr. (who she toured with and who was one of our favorite new artists last year). Her dream-like arrangements and alluring vocals create an atmosphere that is at once intimate and cinematic, and while her first songs are simply gorgeous, there’s plenty of room for expansion on her ageless songwriting.
