Girlpool,– two female musicians who got together a while back at LA’s famous indie haunt the Smell – are a scream. Literally: they sound as though they’re screaming all the time on their records. OK, maybe not screaming. Something shriller and whinier than that. Shrieking. Whatever, it’s effective, and those voices, combined with their raw stripped-down guitar-bass arrangements (no drums) and simple nursery rhyme-goes-Americana melodies, make for an arresting combination. It is like being cornered by a couple of characters from HBO’s Girls and made to listen to their boyfriend problems in excruciating detail

Shelflife Records presents the debut EP from Los Angeles based The Turns, a band who looks and sounds like the product of Creation Records 1989, but apply their own twist and turns to make their music uniquely modern. This EP was originally planned for a mid-2015 release, but we are releasing it early in digital-only format in cooperation with Lollipop Records who are making the EP available on limited edition cassette.

Cherry Glazer have just come to my attention, A three-piece band from L.A. that took root in 2012 when front woman, songwriter/guitarist Clementine Creevy began making bedroom demos under the name Clembutt. These rough tracks evolved under the mentorship of Lucy Miyaki, of L.A. band Tashaki Miyaki, and were later recorded with engineer Joel Jerome. After adding bassist Sean Redman and drummer Hannah Uribe, the band was formed, and Burger Records released their first collection, Papa Cremp with dreamy vocals and an ethereal guitar, Cherry Glazerr’s “Trick or Treat Dancefloor” has become the band’s best known song to date, having been featured in a campaign for iconic fashion label Saint Laurent as well as in the television show Arrow.
But the band goes beyond shoe gazey, lo-fi dream pop. Their bare bones style and precise, honest lyrics anchor a diverse sound that ranges from White’s Not My Color This Evening, with Sleater Kinney’s post punk influences to their break out song, the surf pop “Teenage Girl”, which premiered on internationally known style site Rookie Mag.
Cherry Glazerr consistently tour in Los Angeles and Orange County, having played festivals Burgerama, Growlers Beach Goth Party and Jubilee in Downtown L.A. where they shared the stage with Bleached and The Black Lips. Most recently, they played the El Rey, opening for legendary 80’s punk band Redd Kross and Mikal Cronin. The band’s name is taken from NPR reporter Cherry Glaser

The Three O’Clock is an American alternative rock group associated with the Los Angeles 1980s Paisley Underground scene. Lead singer and bassist Michael Quercio is credited with coining the term “Paisley Underground” to describe a subset of the 1980s L.A. music scene which included bands such as Dream Syndicate, Rain Parade, Green on Red, and the Bangles.
After 25 years of turning down reunion offers, The Three O’Clock finally reformed after being presented with a chance to play at the 2013 Coachella festival. Three quarters of the “classic” line-up, Michael Quercio (vocals/bass), Louis Gutierrez (guitars) & Danny Benair (drums) – were joined by new recruit Adam Merrin on keyboards. The group played both weekends of the Coachella festival, and also played TV show Late Night With Conan on April 10, 2013. They later embarked on a mini-tour, and released several archival recordings that same year. The final show of the tour was at Fingerprints record store in Long Beach California on June 24, 2013.
In December 2013, The Three O’Clock played two nights with three other reunited Paisley Underground bands – The Bangles, Dream Syndicate, and Rain Parade – at The Fillmore in San Francisco (Dec. 5) and The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles (Dec. 6 benefit concert in 2013.

The Dollyrots”Get Weird”, off their new 2014 album “Barefoot And Pregnant” The Dollyrots are a punk rock band but their CDs are very pop. Rah rah rah. Vocalist Kelly Ogden is sugar sweet but mischievous and might sucker punch you if you’re dumb enough to try her patience. Which she has a lot of, She likes to do girl things like grow plants and sew up her t-shirts and crochet and make strawberry cakes. But she also likes to play her basses til they are sprinkled with blood and drives soo fast she’s not allowed behind the wheel. She likes to get carsick reading and writing postcards from the road. Her favorite guy is Quito, her dog, who you’ll meet after the show if you come see the band on tour. She loves Irish punk rock, girl groups, and anything off the “Dirty Dancing” soundtrack.

GIRLPOOL – ” Thirteen ” Big Star Cover

Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad, the brains behind Los Angeles fuzz-punk duo Girlpool, have a penchant for penning catchy critiques about prevalent social issues, like our culture of silence. First there was “Jane”, a noir-ish guitar ballad encouraging all to speak up in the face of oppression. In the pair’s latest unapologetic single, “Blah Blah Blah”, they refuse to stay silent, calling out a nameless former friend for their meaningless words and excuses. Seeing how this person left Girlpool crying in the rain, chased other girls, and then called them after for comfort, it’s sweet retribution when the two snarl together: “I can’t stand your shit anymore!” and just for comparison here is the BIG STAR version
