It definitely takes attitude to name your band L.A. Witch and that attitude comes through in the band’s music. Dark, mysterious and very clearly influenced by psychedelia, L.A. Witch’s named alludes to both the music and motifs the band puts out.

“The original line up was all girls with really long dark hair and we wore all black. It seemed kind of witchy and mysterious and beautiful,” vocalist and guitarist Sade Sanchez says. “You know, a witch is automatically thought of as female and it can be good or evil but it is a powerful kind of woman. Plus there aren’t a lot of people wearing all black in L.A.”

Although drummer Ellie English wasn’t in the original band line-up, they have been playing as the current trio with Irita Pai on bass and organ as well for over two years. Pai says the band’s interest in darker things has been a lifelong theme.

“It represents the dark side of human nature,” she says. “When I was little everyone else would be watching rom-coms and I’d just want to watch some scary weird horror movie.

“I feel like we are who we are on stage,” Pai continues. “We don’t try to be anything.”

Just before English joined the line-up, L.A. Witch release a three-song self titled and self released EP, which was later picked up and released digitally by Manimals—a label that represents Warpaint, Death Valley Girls and Bat for Lashes to name a few.

Although the band currently only has those three songs released, it’s fair to say those three songs have impressed. Ranging from tripped out rocking psych revival to melancholy dark folk and even moments of stoner metal peeking in, it’s clear that whatever L.A. Witch is going for it’s going to be a little more morose and somber than some of the other psych bands out there.

“I think it’s really easy to group everything as psych sometimes, a lot of Lollipop bands have a lot of garage or a lot of pop influence as well,” Sanchez says. “That’s one thing—we’re not really pop.” So if they’re not pop, what are they?

“It’s really raw. It’s not necessarily upbeat or something you can dance to or mosh to or whatever,” she continues. “It’s the kind of thing you really have to pay attention to.”

In terms of inspiration, the band pulls from everything from Nirvana and ‘90s female alternative acts to ’60s psych and ‘90s neo-psych to horror movies and Black Sabbath—the latter of which is most evident in the breakdown of “You Love Nothing.” Sanchez says “Heart of Darkness,” though, had a much different influence.

“Heart of Darkness was really influenced by blues. The Rolling Stones wrote a lot of really bluesy stuff, especially in the beginning,” she says. “I was messing around with different tuning on my guitar and that really is a blues tuning but I dropped one of the notes really, really low. When you drop a note that low it makes it like a dark blues tuning and that’s how that song got its feel.”

With those three songs released, the band has managed to book some pretty impressive gigs, including this year’s Austin Psych Fest. However, Pai says it’s a matter of building an audience more than a discography.

“We’ve been playing for a long time,” she says. “We started out playing a lot of shitty shows and even though we’ve only released three songs I think we’ve been able to build a reputation just playing as much as we have.”

L.A. Witch will be releasing a new single within the next couple weeks. After that, you can get their 7”, released by Psych Fest’s label Reverberation Appreciation Society, in September with their first full-length album following shortly.

Froth – “Postcard Radio” from their forthcoming album, Bleak,

Burger Records has existed since 2007, but the label’s truly grown in popularity over the last two years. Between tons of releases, throwing festivals in different cities, a seemingly endless roster, and a constant profile in the  New York Times, it’s hard to believe the dudes who run the label get any sleep at all. It’s easy to become a band that gets lost within Burger’s primarily garage-rock roster, however LA four-piece Froth’s 60s-inspired, catchy, shoe-gaze surf rock have always made the band a standout gem.

We’re premiering Froth’s new song for “Postcard Radio,” which is the perfect song to listen to while hanging out of a car window, and eating a donut while wearing sweet sunglasses when the summer comes.

L.A. WITCH  are from Los Angeles ( Of Course )  and sport a dark bluesy sound that recalls a pitch-black Widowspeak or, yes, BRMC know-what. But the band’s music is also heavy on smoky attitude which you 100% need with this kind of thing.”

Dirty distorted country, Imagine Kim Deal influenced by Nirvana (rather than the other way around)” with images of Gun Club ‘Fire Of Love’ era and early X” and echoes of  the early ragged glory of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club or the Black Angels” with a style of haunted surf rock, road trip blues and 60’s-sounding psychedelia , Scuzzy dark country minimalism… ghostly lo-fi vocals and Black Angels-sounding psychedelia..

LA FEMME – ” Candy “

This project is a story of friendship, design and music. One summer evening, the Ateliers SeeWhy asked me to draw a guitar to initiate their project “A designer, a guitar,” which proposes to associate the design and lute-making. So I suggested them to draw one for a band that I love. At that time La Femme gave rhythm my days. Candy was born. Candy is a wooden apple that is dipped into a resin bath. Each tempering generates a single guitar. Its glazing echoes at the Californian psycho sound of the band. It reminds me the spontaneous energy of the La Femme sound.

Los Angeles-based trio Wake Up Lucid unleashes their fourth offering, a 6-song E.P. “Gone With The Night” and it’s a slab of good old fashioned “super-rock”; a blinding flash of riff-age tempered by melody and power.  The sound of taut, dirty guitars fill this album in an almost classic-style.

Driven by three cousins, Ryan, Ian and Jamie Baca, this band sets its sights on “stun” and that’s what they do on the lead off track, “White Collar Love” – blistering and sneering, with the lead vocals being literally spat out in a balls-out manner.  “Let It Roll” comes in with a Sabbath-like opening riff – heavy, dark, slow, menacing and just plows along like a long-lost Uriah Heep piece; “I Want” screams with sonic overload and a pure ’70’s drum and the title track is the surprise as it has some very Floyd-like textures, with its acoustic body and atmospheric feel.

Good stuff, especially for a Friday night listen – keep your eyes open for Wake Up Lucid.

Bruce Springsteen The Boss was a singer songwriter signed to Columbia records in the early seventies. Having recorded two critically well received albums Greetings From Asbury Park and The Wild the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle he broke through commercially worldwide with the album Born To Run which was released on the 25th August 1975. Whilst the album broke Bruce his relationship with his manager had soured to the extent that he was subsequently embroiled in litigation for two years and unable to record for over twelve months. This gave Bruce and the band the opportunity to hone their craft by playing extensively across the USA and also a well-documented appearance in the UK. This recording is the complete performance from a stint at The Roxy in Los Angeles in October 1975. The set was broadcast on radio and is considered to be one of the great live performances featuring songs from the recently released Born To Run album and also key songs from his previous two albums alongside some covers which he made his own in new arrangements. This album contains a radio performance of Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band from The Roxy Los Angeles. Includes complete Performance from the early Show at The Roxy. 50 Years after their 1965 Single “MAKIN’ LOVE” here comes the Sloths newly released track and a debut album to follow titled “BACK FROM THE GRAVE”!!! these original sunset strip garage rockers release their CD on Lollipop and cassette collab w/ Burger Records!!!

The Sloths played virtually every venue in Hollywood; The Palladium, The Stratford, Sea Witch, The Hullabaloo, Bito Lidos, The Galaxy, and The Whiskey. They shared the bill with The Doors, Love, Iron Butterfly, The Seeds, The Electric Prunes and British icons Pink Floyd and The Animals.

Unbeknownst to them, during the 1980s, their record of MAKIN’ LOVE was discovered and added to a collection of garage band music entitled BACK FROM THE GRAVE. It was now covered by many bands including The Gories. By 2011, the scarce remaining copies of their 45rpm of MAKIN’ LOVE and YOU MEAN EVERYTHING TO ME was selling on eBay for $6,550.00. Hearing of this, rock fanzine UGLY THINGS decided to do an article on this unique occurrence and wanted to solve the mystery of ‘Who were The Sloths?’. UGLY THINGS editor Mike Stax tracked down original guitarist JEFF BRISKIN, while at same time, Mike Dugo of http://www.60sgarageband.com found bassist MIKE RUMMANS. Slowly others were found… STEVE DIBNER, DON SILVERMAN, and former MAY WINE lead singer TOMMY McLOUGHLIN
