Kid Wave from London, Wonderlust. It’s an aptly-titled for an international band whose founding members’ wanderings lead them to congregate in the capital. Kid Wave began life as a solo when Lea Emmery relocated from Norrköping (a city sometimes referred to as “Sweden’s Manchester”) to London in 2011 at the age of 18. She knew no-one, had no band, no contacts. But she did have drive, vision and ambition – insane levels of it, in fact. Several years playing classical piano at a local college in Sweden had lead to a stint in an all-girl punk band and though that tenure was short-lived, there was simply no turning back. Noise beckoned.

What began life as solo demos soon morphed into Kid Wave when Mattias Bhatt, part of the same clique of indie kids back in Norrköping an now in London, signed up. From Perth, Australia, Serra Petale was teaching drums at a college where Lea was studying sound engineering and seemed “impossibly cool”. She was in. Bassist Harry Deacon was a friend-of-friends.

A clutch of early songs were recorded with Rory Atwell (Palma Violets, The Vaccines, Male Bonding) production, before Lea sent some music to Heavenly Recordings – “and no-one else”. Kid Wave had no management, no team of people fighting their corner. Just songs. Heavenly liked what they heard and signed the band in early 2014. It was, Lea laughs, that simple. The plan that she had when she moved to London with some clothes and a guitar was working remarkably well.

2014 saw Kid Wave playing shows with The Wytches, TOY, The Orwells, Childhood and more recently with Jimi Goodwin at the Heavenly 25 weekend in Hebden Bridge. In autumn 2014 they recorded Wonderlust at the magical analogue wonderland that is Eve Studio in Stockport with producer Dan Austin (Doves, Cherry Ghost). Beyond the studio the lashing rain and dark north-west nights were banished by the youthful exuberance and sugared sounds being created within.

Because Kid Wave sing escapist song of struggle, desire and yearning: songs born out of Lea’s lonely years as a teenager adrift in a foreign country, where the hope of musical success and a superhuman level of stubbornness were the only things stopping her from returning to the safety of the family home. There were, she says, anxieties. Plenty of those. Teenage dreams so hard to beat? Well – yes, actually. It’s a philosophy that still stands – that idea of music as a mood-altering, soul-saving outlet for bands and fans alike is alive and singing in the joyous rush of Kid Wave songs such as the breaking waves of sound on the jangling ‘All I Want’, the yearning ethereal pop of ‘Gloom’ or the chiming fuzzed-up pop riffs of ‘Wonderlust’.

Hilang Child the alter ego of London based multi-instrumentalist Ed Riman.

Releasing an EP online last year, the songwriter was able to get his songs out there without much of the machinery, the apparatus which often filters new music. A bold, new voice, Hilang Child matches powerfully emotive songwriting to arrangements which both soothe and challenge. This is the first of a double single, to be released through Akira Records on June 15th.

Engrossing and sweetly poetic, New single ‘Thule’ will be released on June 15th,  able to bring you the premiere. Opening with near martial drums, the soaring vocal zips atop a lush arrangement which uses layers of sound to give sparse sounds an epic feel.

STORMS – ” Swell “

Video directed, produced, and edited by Storms. Storms are a London post grunge band consisting of Felix Howes (guitar), George Runciman (vocals/guitar), Yacob Andersen (bass/ vocals) and Gary Lee (drums). The band are currently in the studio with legendary producer Steve Osborne (Placebo, Young Guns, New Order, U2) where they are putting the final touches to their debut album.

Storms have been building a stunning live reputation touring the UK solidly in 2014. The band ended the year with rip-roaring performances headlining a nationwide tour with LIFE and playing This Feeling as a tip for 2015.

Recent coverage includes NME radar, Loaded Magazine and a feature in national daily newspaper. Storms have also been tipped for 2015 by XFM and have had several plays including Dave Rowntree and Propaganda.

The band has just headlined The X-Ray Artist Showcase Top Tips for 2015 as part of the International Live Music Conference (ILMC) in London. A monthly residence has been announced at St Moritz Club in Soho over the summer, and a support slot with The Rifles at the Electric Ballroom, London in June.

Video for ‘Hesitate’ by Desperate Journalist taken from the album ‘Desperate Journalist’ out now on Fierce Panda (UK) & Minty Fresh Records(US) ‘Hesitate’ is the new upcoming single by London four-piece Desperate Journalist, and to get you in the mood they have share the accompanying video.

Taken from the album their self-titled debut album, the Jason Weidner-directed video to the track was worked around vocalist Jo Bevan’s coming across the work of film artist Takashi Ito.

“I was really struck by how he uses time lapse photography, projection and altered film speeds in a sketching way to make something at once sadly romantic, ghostly and kind of mundane. I sent one of his films (‘Grim’) to Jason and he came up with a treatment inspired by Ito’s aesthetic which perfectly reflects the paralysing anxiety of the lyrics.”

‘Hesitate’ is darkly intense song epitomized by a nervy bass line and pulsing drums, gradually melding with Bevan’s vocal, it all flows into an explosion of poetic lyrics set against a sonic wall of frenetic guitars.

The band head out on tour next month, playing a handful of shows as follows:

Sunday 24th May – Birmingham, Hare & Hounds
Wednesday 27th May – Sheffield, Rocking Chair
Thursday 28th May – London, 100 Club
Friday 29th May – Norwich, The Blueberry
Saturday 30th May – Bristol, The Stag & Hounds

London’s Big Deal return with their first new track since the release of their second LP, “Veronica” is lifted from their as of yet forthcoming third album , Last summer Big Deal released a stunning second album, “June Gloom” (via Mute Records). They took the spare, largely acoustic template from debut record, Lights Out, and beefed up their heart-achingly gorgeous songs with a full band and heaps of distortion. It proved that made up London-born Alice Costelloe and California’s Kacey Underwood had more in them than the uncomfortable hush of “Talk” and “Homework”: they could really—excuse the phrase—rock out. Take those boomy drums and layered vocals of “Dream Machines” as evidence.

“Veronica” is premiering above, and it’s their first song off their forthcoming third full length album releaseThe 90s fuzz is still in place, the tugging melancholy as they sing, “You get the best of it all…,”the song packs all the power of first love. or is this a break up song? Are they singing about Veronica from Heathers? Did they both date Veronica and now she’s ditched them and run away  Who knows, but the slow build and wig out just after the four minute mark is an unexpected thrill.

Big Deal (UK) Tour Dates

17th April – Leadmill – Sheffield w/Drenge

18th April – The Waterfront – Norwich w/Drenge

20th April – Trinity Center – Bristol w/Drenge

21st April – Electric Ballroom – London w/Drenge

25th May – Gold Sounds – Leeds University Union

We can only assume this a taster of what’s to come and if so, their third record is going to be awesome.

London shoegaze quartet Cheatahs are back like they never left after releasing February’s fierce Sunne EP. The band hits us with the title track off their new four-song EP, Murasaki, and if this kickoff is any indication, it will be an unstoppable driving force. The strict conceptual EP is inspired by Japanese poet and novelist Murasaki Shikibu. “Murasaki” in particular is inspired by a pivotal moment in Shikibu’s novel A Tale Of Genji. Just as Murasaki blended the style and techniques of the Chinese narrative poetry and Japanese prose of her time to imprint a distinctive stamp on her novel, Cheatahs have used their signature dynamic rhythms and percussion, and winding delicate sounds to interpret Shikibu’s scene in a way only they could.

Anna B Savage first graced our ears last month with the soft and fragile ‘1’, where she reflects on her insecurities and search for a feminist strength in a mesmerising dream. It’s been said that I am strong/ And they’re not entirely wrong/ But I ran, I ran, I ran from him/ Like I’ve done from all of them, near-whispers new London singer-songwriter Anna B Savage on her debut song, “1.” It’s the kind of song that sounds like it came from the dead of night, a tune that one sings to one’s self in an attempt to quiet the mind. Savage is unblinking in her inward gaze, sharing her fears with her guitar. And it seems to work, too, for they both rouse themselves for a satisfying closing crescendo.

Now, alongside news of a debut EP due next month, the London-based songstress has released ‘II’, a darker, fiercer dive into her consciousness.
