Two weeks ago, over 1300 bands settled down in New York City for the CMJ Music Marathon, including the Leeds indie pop band “Adult Jazz”. This quartet’s debut album, “Gist Is”, is a sophisticated and sensual mélange of songs that ramble and blossom in beautiful, unexpected ways. They made quite a splash at CMJ, landing on radio presenter Bob Boilen’s list of his top-10-discoveries from the 2014-CMJ Festival. The band’s frontman Harry Burgess kept a diary of his adventures at CMJ Adult Jazz travels through New York via stops at Stonewall, the Schomburg Center in Harlem and the High Line.

Here’s a band with a truly unique sound. The guitar playing is mostly undistorted and spare: There are punctuating moments of trombone and keyboards with delicate sometimes high, always soft vocals. I didn’t walk away remembering a single melody and that’s usually not a positive thing for me, but I loved living in this sound. It’s fresh and calculated, rhythmic but not dancey. I don’t know where this band is headed but I’m going to follow them with interest and get to see them as often as possible. If you’re not spinning their fantastic debut album “Gist” which is regularly on the turntable, you’re missing on one of the finest treasures of 2014. The British art-rockers made their U.S. debut at CMJ, stopping in for a few select showcases. With a band like Adult Jazz, you need a small intimate venue with a hushed crowd that will help you soak in all the quiet spaces and stop-start harmonies that Adult Jazz create. they played early on in the day at End Of The road festival without one of their band members and still sounded fresh and mesmerising.

Sophie Jamieson still shockingly the young singer songwriter introduced herself in dramatic fashion via excellent debut single ‘Stain/Other’ earlier this summer. Softly inspiring, her folk hued tones were matched against a quiet intensity. Still working on her craft, the new EP ‘Take’ will be released on December 8th.

Ahead of this, Sophie Jamieson has placed the title track online. There are shades of Anna Calvi, Daughter here, or even PJ Harvey, with the singer seeming to rapidly mature.Lyrically, ‘Take’ pulls no punches with the beauty of the arrangement set against the emotional impact of the delivery.

Handpicked by Jamie T to support him at his much hyped comeback show  this summer,The band Palace. But then, they deserve it. The rising indie newcomers have a remarkably assured sound, almost cinematic in its sweeping, melancholic grandeur. The
ir debut EP ‘Lost In The Night‘ emerged last week via Beatnik Creative. The Lead track ‘Bitter’ made a massive stir, with the accompanying visuals from Liam Saint-Pierre perfectly matching the tightly wrought emotions of the music itself. A confident, highly potent introduction, the material on ‘Lost In The Night’ has been finely honed, with Palace self-producing at their North London studio.

All Mod Cons, released to wide acclaim in 1978, firmly cemented the group’s rise to extraordinary heights. Indeed, for many it was the first essential Jam album and listening to it now its impact has not diminished over time.”
When I think about English records I think of The Kinks’ The Village Green Preservation Society, The Smiths’ The Queen is Dead, The Who’s Quadrophenia and The Jam’s All Mod Cons. To me all those albums are definately English. It’s their third full-length LP. It took it’s title from a British idiom one might find in housing advertisements, is short for “all modern conveniences” and is a pun on the band’s association with the mod revival as well. Of Course it is also Paul Weller’s view on the music business as a ‘con’.The single “Down in the Tube Station at Midnight” was one of the band’s most successful chart hits up to that point, peaking at No15 in the UK charts. In 2000, Q magazine placed All Mod Cons at number 50 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. it is their best album.
British Invasion pop influences run through the album, most obviously in the cover of The Kinks’ David Watts and It’s too bad a song The Who would have been proud of.
To Be Someone (Didn’t we have a nice) time is an early jab at the rock’n roll lifestyle, about the hollow and empty life of a star, supposedly written after a horrible tour pairing in America with Blue Oyster Cult. The Bass line is a cool rip-of of Paul McCartneys bass line to “Taxman”.

I’ve highlighted my favourite tracks, but all the tracks are really strong, great playing and great singing all around. The Production is unusually complex and sophisticated for a punk/new wave album. The song “Down in the Tube Station at Midnight” is a first-person narrative of a young man who walks into a tube station on the way home to his wife, and is beaten by far right thugs. The lyrics of the song “All Mod Cons” criticise fickle people who attach themselves to people who enjoy success and leave them once that is over. The Jam regrouped and refocused for All Mod Cons, an album that marked a great leap in songwriting maturity and sense of purpose. For the first time, Paul Weller built, rather than fell back, upon his influences, carving a distinct voice all his own; he employed a story-style narrative with invented characters and vivid British imagery à la Ray Davies to make incisive social commentary — all in a musically irresistible package. The youthful perspective and impassioned delivery on All Mod Cons first earned Weller the “voice of a generation” tag, and it certainly captures a moment in time, but really, the feelings and sentiments expressed on the album just as easily speak to any future generation of young people. Terms like “classic” are often bandied about, but in the case of All Mod Cons, it is certainly deserved.
Released 3 November 1978, recorded during July through to mid August 1978, at RAK Studios (Upper London) and Eden Studios listed as Punk rock, or Mod Revival, but also Power pop with a running time of just over 37 minutes, produced by Vic Coppersmith-Heaven and Chris Parry and released on the Polydor label 3rd November 1978

The Canadian group Dilly Dally exude a combination of nonchalance and expertly-concealed nervousness. Their songs are bloody-knuckled marvels, big, hammering numbers that are grainy and gritty and yet still centered around clear and cunning pop melodies .  The reference points are all late ’90s – there are nods to Nirvana and L7 in both the charred scrap metal guitars and Katie Monks’s roaring, blown-throat vocals. Their force and power was breathtaking, the sound of a band discovering itself in real-time and reveling in the possibilities.

Father John Misty performed the lead track, Bored In The USA on TV this week, off his upcoming Sub Pop effort. Josh Tillman and his twisted mind new album. I Love You, Honeybear is the follow up to 2012′s excellent Fear Fun. Sub Pop will be releasing it to the world on 9th February 2015. Here’s what Josh has to say about the album.

I Love You, Honeybear was recorded all through 2013 to 2014 in Los Angeles with producer Jonathan Wilson, who I also recorded and produced 2012’s Fairly Fun with. There’s a case to be made that it sounds and acts a bit like solo-era John Lennon, Scott Walker, Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson, and Dory Previn, while taking more than a few cues from Woody Allen, Kurt Vonnegut, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Muhammad Ali. It has a decidedly more soulful presence than Fear Fun, due in no small part to the fact that I am truly singing my ass off all over this motherfucker. The album is really characterized by the scope and ambition of the arrangements. Nearly every tune is augmented by something special, be it orchestral strings, a mariachi band, questionable electronic drum solos, ragtime jazz combos, soul singers, or what have you. I’m pretty sure there’s a sitar in there somewhere.

Whirr is an American shoegaze band from San Francisco, California, United States. They formed in 2010, originally as Whirl. The name was created by the original drummer, Sergio Miranda, in the midst of recording the band’s first demos as a nameless project. It was a homage to all the bands of “the Scene That Celebrates Itself” (Lush, Ride, Moose, Medicine, Lilys, etc.). They had to legally change the name after a woman performing acoustic covers of Black Sabbath songs trademarked “Whirl” had threatened a lawsuit.
Whirr’s sound is often compared to My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. Founding guitarist Nick Bassett also played in the band Deafheaven surrounding and including the release of their 2011 album, Roads to Judah.
After a self-released demo cassette and the Distressor EP, the band signed to Tee Pee Records in 2011. The original vocalist Byanca Munoz left the band because of creative differences, and was soon replaced by Alexandra Morte (Night School,).
In 2013, the original drummer Sergio Miranda left the band and was replaced by Devin Nunes. Former vocalist Alexandra Morte also left the band and was replaced by Kristina Esfandiari (Miserable, King Woman). The band released a live EP entitled “Part Time Punks Sessions” on April 20, 2013. It was a performance recorded in 2012 that featured the band’s previous lineup.

The Twilight Sad’s new LP, Nobody Wants To Be Here And Nobody Wants To Leave, was released last month, with a small tour to support the album, the Scottish group gives us a video for “Last January.” The clip features two tattooed men as they drive around a nondescript city and walk through a field, smoking and looking depressed. The melancholy song is complemented by the moody expressions of the actors and director Nicola Collins’ choice to film in crisp black and white. Watch.
