Love is Love was written and recorded in the two months immediately following the election, but it’s not a record borne entirely of angry, knee-jerk reaction to what America is becoming. Instead, it’s a meditation on love, and on what life means now. Taking cues from last year’s City Sun Eater in the River of Light, it feels very much like a record made from living, shoulder to shoulder, in a major city: weaving psychedelic swirls of guitar between languid horns reminiscent of the best Ethiopian jazz—Love is Love is a distinctly New York record. It is a document of protest in uncertain times and an open-hearted rejection of cynicism in favor of emotional honesty. It is bright, and then, unexpectedly, a little dark sometimes too.

There will be parts of life where we will watch as events unfold and we will feel helpless. We will not be sure of the future. On good days, we’ll have each other. On the bad ones, we’ll turn to the art that helps us feel something. Love is Love is a document of the new world we live in, proof that light can come from despair and hope is still possible. We just need a little help remembering it exists.”

Lazyeyes is band from Brooklyn, NY that wasformed in the summer of 2012. The band self-released their sophomore EP, New Year on January 6th, 2015, which was quickly picked up and reissued by Burger Records cassette imprint, Wiener Records.

Lazyeyes was a featured artist in the November 2014 issue of NME described their sound as “a muscular, riff-happy brand of guitar-based dream-pop,” going on to proclaim, “their songs burst with angular hooks and polished melodies.” Their single, “Adaptation” also received high praise from Interview Magazine, who wrote, “‘Adaptation’s’ fast-paced, garage-tinged guitar riff draws the listener in, propelling you through chorus and verse. It is both urgent and reassuringly familiar.”

Lazyeyes perform on Audiotree Live, March 24, 2016.

New York’s experimental dream pop/psychedelic outfit Shana Falana (Shana Falana and Michael Amari) premieres their new video for “Cloudbeats” today, sharing some upcoming tour dates where you can enjoy the live version of this magic in person. The video itself is quite beautiful, beginning with the watercolor palette of a rising sun over the horizon. It basically chronicles a day in the life of Shana, which – yes – does involve some time on the phone before even getting out of bed. Shot by Shana and edited by Michael, the video is very DIY. It brings excitement to every day tasks, and reminds us of the power in our own two hands.

Let Peter Silberman's "Ahimsa" Calm Your Afternoon

The Antlers frontman Peter Silberman’s forthcoming solo debut “Impermanence” promises to be great self-care music—a previously released single “New York” dealt with Silberman’s sensory overload, while the track “Ahimsa” touches on emotional overload. Behind an ambient guitar , Silberman echoes the mantra, “No violence today.” Silberman explains the song’s meaning and value in a statement, saying:

Ahimsa usually translates from Sanskrit as “non-harming”, which I take to mean practicing a non-violent attitude toward others and myself. I wrote the song as a personal encouragement to cultivate that awareness whenever possible, to be less knee-jerk reactive, to snap to fewer judgments, and above all, to be patient. I need this reminder often. “Ahimsa” is also my ridiculous wish: for a unanimous period of calm and safety, for one whole day of peace. I mostly think this is an impossible goal.

But I hold on to some small hope that it can be reached by an incredibly long road, walked with microscopic steps, by creating harmonious moments and stringing them together, one-by-one, over the course of many lifetimes.

Impermanence will be released by Anti Records on February. 24th. Listen to “Ahimsa” below, also check out Silberman’s upcoming tour dates.

HAND HABITS DEMAND IT

“Wildly Idle”, the warmly enveloping new album from Meg Duffy, aka Hand Habits, is out tomorrow on Woodsist Records. Today, she shares the video for one of the record’s prettiest, most achingly wistful tracks, starring Duffy herself in a house with mysterious figures with fabric-draped faces, framed by soft-focus shots that lend the vid a gauzy, dream-like quality that suits the song nicely. Shot + directed by Christina Acevedo:

Alright guys – here it is, the first single – ‘In Yer Time’
As a band we’ve been going back and forth whether we wanted to stay the course or follow what we thought as right and put the song up today..givin the gravity of todays apocalyptic event here it is fer you. We hope that, hopefully, despite all the destruction in this world, people can take the time to gather friends and listen to the music- we’ll always have the songs..

The Britany’s a New York, Strokes compared garage-punks together now since 2014 when they were just a trio playing fuzz-laced rock. have also experienced eclectic change from playing primarily local gigs to a ‘dip in the pool’ US tour alongside, fellow Big Apple boys, Public Access TV. Throw in their ‘hit’ single ‘Basketholder’, an ‘Interview’ magazine feature; a SXSW slot; recording sessions with legendary producer, Gordon Raphael, the avalanche of success continues to sweep up the band.

Now expanded to a four-piece, adding a further guitarist Jake Williams to the line-up, there’s a new single released last week. Produced by Jonathan Schenke (The Drums, Parquet Courts), ‘In Yer Time’ is the first cut from their upcoming debut EP, which arrives on February 3rd. It has plenty of their trademark catchy hooks to fill out the four minutes, while Lucas Long commands the vocal side.

Currently on tour in the US, The Britanys head to the UK in February.

Brooklyn-via-California pop auteur Betsey Hershey made her mark last year with Days Hours Nights, her dreamy debut album as BETS. Not long after that inaugural release, she hit the studio to record her sophomore album, but serendipity had other plans: Hershey soon diverted her attention to a deep musical study of Violent Femmes, the landmark 1983 debut from the eventual alt-rock icons. Just like that, a new standalone BETS release morphed into a full-album Femmes tribute, informed by Hershey’s characteristic musical palette: lilting shoegaze riffs (with ethereal, Sandoval-esque vocals to match), a swooning pop mainframe and deep psychedelic overtones.

On the heels of Hershey’s previously shared “Blister in the Sun” cover, is proud to unveil another taste of project Violent Femmes, out January 27th. listen to Hershey’s take on the Femmes‘ classic “Gone Daddy Gone / I Just Want to Make Love to You” (famously revived by Gnarls Barkley for their hit 2006 album St. Elsewhere).

Brooklyn’s Ian Sweet have a new video for “Slime Time Live” which is off last year’s Shapeshifer . Director Ryan Baxley takes the song’s title literally, evoking shades of Eraserhead‘s classic dinner scene, though the shade here is slime-green. Singer Jillian Medford tells us a little more about the video:

I have always dreamed about getting slimed/pied in the face…this video is an example that dreams really do come true…just maybe not quite as you’d expect.
Ryan Baxley (director), Danny Noguieras and Brandon Schwartzel created props out of unlikely materials for the Double Dare/pie in the face dream scene. That was personal my favorite scene. We did at least 10 pies to the face.

The video portrays a dream I had and how it abruptly becomes a deep, dark, twisted reality. My actual mom plays the super freaky role of my “evil” mom trying to poison me with slime! She actually committed to her character so much that she ate the slime! We were all shocked! Shit tastes nasty. The last shot we did was me going under in a bathtub full of slime. As soon as I went under I felt stripped of my senses, like I was in a sensory deprivation chamber because of how thick and dark the slime was. I still have freaky daydreams about it. But I highly recommend getting slimed at least once in your life.
