“Blake Babies-era, Juliana Hatfieldian notes afloat over fast and loose down strummed Weddingesesque rifferama. The first song to be plucked from their new album Portion Control – ‘Melted Wires’ is a buzzing and propulsive track of guitar-driven music. The band keeps things tight, reigned in but precise in execution. The Sydney four-piece (which features members of Day Ravies) is kicking off the roll out of the album in a suitably catchy style – this track is an ear-worm, as in it’s really good even when replaying in your head for the umpteenth time

This millennial generation have become rather proficient at documenting life. Music’s ability to capture, share, and canonise the human experience . January 28th signals both the completion and commencement of chapters for Brae McKee. The creator/curator behind the band Bjéar, thier debut self-titled record from the Adelaide group is an extension of his journey thus far. Like a documentary of the transition from youth to adulthood, the record is a collection of emotions and experiences – art, travel, film, joy, nostalgia, heartbreak. The music is consciously diverse, honest, woven together with stories and parables.

Bjéar’s debut project – self-recorded and produced entirely within the confines of McKee’s home studio – is a prime example of the changing nature of music. With no meddling from industry suits, the product remains raw; as intended. It all works together to heighten the intimacy and transparency between musician and consumer. That proximity and relationship has never been more accessible than now. It is in this spirit – one of mixed vulnerability and strength .

Contemporary consumers are bombarded daily with headlines of shootings, mindless killings, starvation, devastating statistics, pain, loss, heartless decisions and a crumbling environment. From our newsfeeds to newspapers, we are confronted with information that can make you feel like the world is disintegrating before our very eyes. This plethora of devastation and its sheer reach and scale can make it feel as though there is little we can do as individuals to make a change or difference.

Gotye’s ‘Eyes Wide Open’ resonates with me now, more than ever. It feels crucial for us all to be reminded that, ‘we’re all in the same boat, staying afloat for the moment’. We are all finding our way on this earth. We are all made equal. We are all worthy of justice. We all deserve safety. It is time to show our humanity.

Linger is a singer-songwriter who hails from Sydney, Australia.

In late September 2016, Línger released her debut single ‘Flyon’ and has already proven she is a powerful force to be admired. The single, and EP ‘tuple’ were recorded in her home in Sydney, Australia, produced by fellow Sydney artist, Xavier Dunn.

Línger is a collaboration between experience and emotion that has come to fruition through years of feeling, longing and by simply being. Her words, originating in part through the creation of poetry, seek to make sense of the world which at times mystifies us all. Her EP ‘tuple’ is inspired by the five elements of air, fire, water, earth and space. Attuned to divinity, each of Línger’s songs is able to insightfully capture moments in time that reflect what it means to be human.

“They crest and billow gracefully, enchanting us within rich swelling tides of atmospheric electronica and reverberating acoustics…I’m left shivering in the wake of this breathtaking jewel.”

One of King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard’s most notable successes was the record Nonagon Infinity. Released over a year ago, it was the group’s eighth record, and since its release, the band have somehow managed to find time to release two more records,

With the release of their second album of the year “Murder of the Universe” it seems King Gizzard are already getting nostalgic as they travel back to the heady days of “Nonagon Infinity” for their latest video as they give ‘Invisible Face’ a brand new clip.

A combination of live action segments with the kind of animation which best befits an 80’s children’s TV show, and is therefore fucking incredible, makes this video one of the better ones floating around this week.

Jason Galaea and Joel Melrose are behind the brilliant visuals which also keep the coloured robes which have started to appear around the King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard camp and also befits another children’s TV show by the name of; Power Rangers. And when you think about it, is there another band you could see fighting and defeating someone named Lord Zedd?.

The clip has all you need snakes, dark landscapes, jet planes falling form the sky, the whole shebang, really. So sit back, get psyched and watch this brilliant video for ‘Invisible Face’.

I’ve noticed Julia and the Deep Sea Sirens front-woman Julia Johnson popping up on bills around the country under her own name, so always suspected it was only a matter of time before we saw her officially launch of her solo career. It’s exciting to have these suspicions confirmed with the release of Johnson’s debut solo single “Melissa”. The single sees Julia Johnson step away from the guitar and banjo driven folk of Julia and the Deep Sea Sirens and more towards a synth based contemporary folk sound.

“I needed to get out of my comfort zone, and boy did I do a good job of that,” Johnson explained. “After a few months in Berlin, my old songs didn’t fit me anymore. Writing all new material has been liberating and fun, but also uncomfortable. This new territory is not easy to navigate.”

“Working with Sarah Belkner has had a huge impact on me creatively. Sarah can take the amorphous, blurry sketches of what I imagine and craft tangible, fleshed-out songs. It’s new to me, putting trust in someone else’s vision. Her instincts and incredible knowledge helped me to shape “Melissa”, taking the song into a realm which I couldn’t have taken it to on my own.”

Julia Johnson has a handful of tour dates in the coming weeks in Australia where you can really get to know her new sound.

The Kite String Tangle is the solo project of alternative electronic artist and producer, Danny Harley. New single ‘Selfish’ out now.

Brisbane producer Danny Harley has returned with a new single called which is quite an unselfish thing to do, really. ‘Selfish’, which you can stream in full below, sees Harley revive his pop-tinged electronics, complete with vocal hooks, trap-tinged percussion and bright synthesizers.

Harley says ‘Selfish’ came about after he “realised that I wasn’t thinking about the people I love nearly as much as I should”. “It’s hard to admit you’re at fault but it’s also a good habit to get into if you’re wanting to be a reasonable human,” he says.

News of ‘Selfish’ comes as Harley announces that he has also launched his own independent record label called Exist. in collaboration with Unified, and has already signed producer Golden Vessel and Gold Coast siblings Lastlings to his roster.

Exist. is a great outlet for my own projects but it’s main focus is to sign other acts and develop their music, talent and careers,” Harley says. “Having Golden Vessel and Lastlings as the first two acts on the label is huge for me.”
