TOM PETTY and the HEARTBREAKERS ” Live On Rockpalast 1999 “
Posted: March 14, 2019 in MUSICTags: Germany, Hamburg, Live At Rockpalast, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

This is one of the greatest sets from the infamous “Rockpalast” live shows ever. It took place at the “Docks” in Hamburg on April 23rd 1999, just a few steps away from the ” Indra” and the “Kaiserkeller”, where The Beatles first played in Hamburg. I’m pretty sure the band knew that, and they were inspired by the fact, that George and the other boys were there nearly 40 years ago. And it was like playing a small club again. I watched this so often, i’d almost think i was there. It has a wonderful setlist ! Great songs from “Wildflowers” and “Echo” and beautiful interpretations from J.J. Cale, S.Stills, Van Morrison & Booker T. Thanks to the “Rockpalast” for bringing great music to us over 40 years. One of the tour s finest shows, the entire set at this remarkable German concert was recorded for FM radio broadcast and simultaneous TV transmission,
When Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, Benmomt Tench and Co. were re-recorded by Rockpalast in 1999, they already had 10 joint studio albums under their belt and were superstars. The concert of the rockers in the Hamburger Docks showed the band in top form.
They used to play their own hits over two hours like “Learning To Fly”, “I Will not Back Down” and “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”, but also covers like “Green Onions” or “Gloria”. Petty made a lot of humorous announcements and solo-ed with Mike Campbell . A real treat.
Setlist: 1. Around And Around 2. Jammin’ Me 3. Running Down A Dream 4. Breakdown 5. Call Me The Breeze 6. Swingin’ 7. Don’t Do Me Like That 8. Diamond Head 9. Mary Jane’s Last Dance 10. I Won’t Back Down 11. Listen To Her Heart 12. Green Onions 13. It’s Good To Be King 14. Lucille 15. Little Maggie 16. Lay Down That Old Guitar 17. Walls 18. Angel Dream 19. For What It’s Worth 20. Room At The Top 21. Guitar Boogie Shuffle 22. American Girl 23. Honey Bee 24. I Don’t Want To Fight 25. You Wreck Me 26. Free Girl Now 27. Free Fallin’ 28. G-L-O-R-I-A 29. Learning To Fly

JOHN KILZER – ” 1957-2019 “
Posted: March 14, 2019 in CLASSIC ALBUMS, MUSICTags: Busman’s Holiday, Geffen Records, John Kilzer, Memory in the Making, Memphis

John Kilzer, a singer and songwriter from Tennessee whose music career spanned 30 years and who became a pastor after undergoing drug recovery, has died. Kilzer’s death was disclosed Tuesday by St. John’s United Methodist Church in Memphis, where he served as an associate pastor for recovery ministries. A cause of death was not disclosed. The church said in a statement that it was a sudden death.
Throughout his life, Kilzer struggled with his drinking, often courting trouble with the law. It was after an arrest in the early ‘90s that he began his path toward finding sobriety and his religious faith.
A native of Jackson, Tennessee, Kilzer was born in 1957. An All-American high school basketball player, Kilzer came to the City as a highly touted shooting guard for the basketball team Memphis State University in 1975, playing four years for the Tigers.
He eventually became an English teacher at his alma mater, and later began a new life as a musician — in part inspired by a chance dorm room encounter with Mabon “Teenie” Hodges, the famed Hi Records guitarist and songwriter. Hodges had come across Kilzer messing around with a guitar, took an instant liking to him and became his mentor. “If he hadn’t walked in the room that night, I wouldn’t be a songwriter,” Kilzer has said.
Kilzer’s musical career took off in the late 1980s, when he was signed to the Geffen label, releasing a pair of roots-rock records for the company, including his 1988 debut, “Memory in the Making,” I bought this album on vinyl in 1988 when it was originally released and subsequently on CD a number of years later. John Kilzer possesses one of the world’s finest voices, not only does he have a natural ‘gravel over honey’ tone he is one of the finest singers you will ever hear in terms of his ability to effortlessly ‘tell his story’. He communicates emotion in every song that does everything from make you want to get up and dance to conversely breaking your heart. Lyrically Kilzer’s songwriting is incredibly diverse, every song feels natural, thought provoking, beautiful and real, he is an incredibly clever songwriter who never strays into being crass or pseudo intellectual. There are so many poignant moments on this album which hasn’t aged in almost 30 years, the next album In 1991’s “Busman’s Holiday.” including Kilzer song the minor rock radio hit “Red Blue Jeans” — brought him exposure on MTV and television shows like “Melrose Place.” Roseanne Cash, Trace Adkins and Maria Muldaur are among artists who recorded his songs.
John Kilzer should have been a star, possibily mentioned in the same breath as Tom Petty and especially Bryan Adams. I have loved this album since I first clapped ears on it in the late 80’s , the years have not diminshed the quality of the songwriting and the playing. The obvious reference point is Bryan Adams circa Reckless but you can pick out influence of blue collar rockers like John Mellancamp in some of that fine songs and guitar playing.
PIXX – ” The Age Of Anxiety “

Pixx’s debut album, The Age Of Anxiety, is a twelve-song collection, featuring ‘I Bow Down’, ‘Grip’, ‘Baboo’ and ‘Waterslides’, seeks to address a generation increasingly isolated by an unprecedented new world order, from the pressures of social media to ever-changing political turbulence.
The Age Of Anxietyborrows its title from W.H. Auden’s final poem, charting one man’s quest to find substance and identity in a shifting and increasingly industrialised world. Published in 1947, Auden’s six-part rumination on human isolation in the modern age parallels the overarching themes of Pixx’s work some seventy years later.

This Mortal Coil was the given name of a strictly-studio project conceived and produced by 4AD Records founder Ivo Watts-Russell that spawned three albums – It’ll End In Tears(1984), Filigree & Shadow (1986), Blood(1991).
The project was conceived and produced by 4AD founder Ivo Watts-Russell, Blood felt like a perfect conclusion to a perfect trilogy of releases.
Meticulously orchestrated, vocalists Alison Limerick, Deirdre and Louise Rutkowski return from the second album with Caroline Crawley (Shelleyan Orphan / Babacar) and 4AD signees Heidi Berry, Kim Deal (Pixies / The Breeders), Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses) and Pieter Nooten all enlisted. Over the span of eight years he, along with Blackwing Studios house engineer/ co-producer, John Fryer, and a rotating cast of musicians, created original works, musical links and reinterpretations of impeccably curated songs; introducing a new audience to the talents of a previous generation including Big Star, Tim Buckley, Roy Harper, Spirit, Gene Clark, Dino Valenti, Rain Parade, Emmylou Harris, Syd Barrett and Colin Newman, amongst others.
All three album reissues on deluxe vinyl versions differ from the original releases with each album having had its artwork reimagined by Ivo Watts-Russell and Vaughan Oliver (4AD’s long-time visual partner). presented in beautiful, hand-finished and high-gloss gatefold sleeves, using remastered audio made from the original analogue studio tapes by the late, great John Dent.

Deluxe double vinyl edition of This Mortal Coil’s second studio release.
Conceived and produced by 4AD founder Ivo Watts-Russell, Filigree & Shadow (1986) was even more ornate than its lauded predecessor (a double album with each of its four sides a self-contained unit). New faces joined the cast for this record, including a variety of singers Ivo handpicked like Alison Limerick, Dominic Appleton (Breathless), sisters Deirdre and Louise Rutkowski (Sunset Gun), and Richenel.

EX:RE – ” Ex:Re “
Posted: March 13, 2019 in CLASSIC ALBUMS, MUSICTags: 4AD Records, Daughter, Elena Tonra, Ex:Re', Glassnote Records

Ex:Re – the solo recordings of Elena Tonra from Daughter – is now available worldwide on vinyl and CD, after the digital release of the album late last year.
The album was Rough Trade’s Album of the Month, and they will be celebrating by offering an exclusive limited blue pressing of the vinyl with a free CD featuring live versions of four tracks recorded at Hoxton Hall, London in November 2018.
Last month Tonra shared the stunning visuals for ‘The Dazzler’. Directed by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard (creators of Daughter’s triptych of videos for their second record Not To Disappear), the video imagines ‘The Dazzler’ as the hotel depicted in Tonra’s lyrics and places the magnificent British actress Maxine Peake languishing alone in one of its rooms (with cameo appearance from Tonra). Running parallel to Daughter, Tonra has assumed the pseudonym Ex:Re (pronounced ex ray) for her eponymously-titled debut solo album, a deeply personal record that was made with both a sense of urgency and a cathartic need.
“A spacious, raw record.” – Q
“The overall effect is immersive, wallowing, sad but often beautiful.” – Uncut
“Fascinating but demanding debut.” – MOJO
“An album that’s fully formed, rich and deeply affecting.” – DIY
“A beautifully understated mood piece and Tonra’s finest work to date, with or without the band.”
– Loud And Quiet
Elena said of the album, “Although the record is written for someone, a lot of the time it’s about the space without that person in it. In every scenario, there’s either the person in memory or the noticeable absence of that person in the present moment. I suppose it is a break-up record, however I do not talk about the relationship at all, and he hardly features in the scenes. He is only felt as a ghostly presence.”
Tonra’s candid solo songs document the time after a relationship ended and are written like unsent letters to herself and others. Taking on a creative moniker, she chose Ex:Re to mean ‘regarding ex’ and also ‘X-Ray’ as a way to look inside and see what is really there. Writing took a year but the recording process lasted mere months, turning to Fabian Prynn (4AD’s in-house engineer and producer) and composer Josephine Stephenson on cello to help bring Ex:Reto life.
Ex:Re’s first single ‘Romance’ its accompanying video (directed by Antonia Luxem
Taken from Ex:Re’s self titled debut album, digitally out now on 4AD & Glassnote Records.
METHYL ETHEL – ” Trip To The Mains “
Posted: March 13, 2019 in CLASSIC ALBUMS, MUSICTags: 4AD Records, Australia, Chris Wright, Jacob Diamond., Jake Webb, Lyndon Blue, Methyl Ethel, Thom Stewart, Triage, West Perth

Triage, the third album by Methyl Ethel. Written, produced and performed by lead singer Jake Webb, mixed by Marta Salogni and mastered by Heba Kadry, Triage was recorded in Webb’s home studio in West Perth, Australia.
With the creation of this album, Webb felt a sense of closure – completing the triptych of his three releases. Methyl Ethel has always been a surrealist outfit – a dark and obscured expression of life set to the backdrop of dream pop hooks. But Triage is a more reflective album – one that explores the notion of coming of age, only to reference it for the snapshots and passing memories that it has become.
Methyl Ethel is the musical project of Jake Webb which expands to a five-piece live band that includes Thom Stewart, Chris Wright, Lyndon Blue and Jacob Diamond. Methyl Ethel has enjoyed phenomenal successes over the last year. In Australia, ‘Ubu’ (the hit single from second album Everything Is Forgotten) became an ARIA Accredited Gold single . The band has clocked up over 46 million streams on Spotify alone and sold out shows in Australia and the UK.
“One of Australia’s most essential current bands.” – Paste
“Methyl Ethel is one of Australia’s weirdest, most beguiling bands, with its endlessly creative frontman Jake Webb nimbly leaping between sounds that draw upon classic pop, shoegaze, and R&B.” – Consequence of Sound
“Choc-a-bloc with hooks and head-nodding electro-pop from the get-go, Methyl Ethel have reached great new heights with this stellar effort.” – NME
“Their finest work yet.” – The Line of Best Fit
“Quite dazzling.” – DIY Magazine
‘Trip the Mains’ is the new single taken from Methyl Ethel’s new album ‘Triage’ out on 4AD Records on February 15th 2019,
PIXX – ” Disgrace “
Posted: March 13, 2019 in CLASSIC ALBUMS, MUSICTags: 4AD Records, Hannah Rodgers, Pixx, Small Mercies

Hannah Rodgers returns with a new Pixx album, “Small Mercies”, on 7th June 2019.
Although love lives at the heart of the BRIT School graduate’s second album, it has little to do with romance. Small Mercies is absolutely not a heartbreak record, nor is it a celebration of new love, or sisterly call-to-arms or vengeful catharsis. Instead, it is a series of poetic examinations of love across the experiential spectrum, from the micro (self-love) to the macro (devotional faith-inspired love, love for this planet), set to a soundtrack that mixes electronic pop and grungy guitar rock with aplomb.
‘Disgrace’ is the new single by Pixx, from the album ‘Small Mercies’ which is released 7th June 2019 on 4AD Records.
STEF CHURA – ” Method Man “
Posted: March 12, 2019 in MUSICTags: Michigan, Saddle Creek Records, Stef Chura

It’s been two years since Michigan’s Stef Chura burst out with her contagious debut LP, Messes. That album was written way back in 2015, long before the Trump presidency and the universe as a whole gave the title an extra edge. So maybe it’s the impending sense of disaster and permacrisis of the past four years that’s led Chura to the freneticism of “Method Man,” the first single from her newly announced Saddle Creek Records debut, Midnight (out June 7th). A pared-down, scratchy, borderline chaotic single — closer to the Two Gallants end of the Saddle Creek roster than the Bright Eyes end, but more freewheeling than either — “Method Man” is a look back at a superior-feeling, over-caffeinated, nicotine-addled man from Chura’s past, by way of Wu-Tang Clan. The song sounds as much like the man’s psyche as it sounds like Chura’s anxiety in his presence.
In a press release accompanying the single, Chura remembered that frustration:
A long time ago I was pondering the literal words “Method Man” while listening to Wu-Tang. There was a person in my life that I had a confusing array of emotions for, sometimes I was in love with him, I admired and looked up to him, I thought of him as superior to me. He was older than me and I was a teenager. At that age I experienced a titanic amount of anxiety that usually expressed itself as silence.
This song was born out of a total frustration regarding a man who seemed “methodical” to me. He was literate. He waxed poetic. Almost someone…how do I say this…that you wanted to be condescending to you? As long as they were talking to you. He drank a lot of energy drinks and had this overall outlook that no one understood him. That he was in on some kind of cosmic secret that I couldn’t get. He smoked so many cigs it stained his fingers yellow.
He was always talking, and I was so enamored with this person. I was always nervous to reply. He would go on and on for hours. He sometimes would look at me and be like “oh maybe you won’t get this…. maybe you don’t get this.” I was too terrified to say much.
The TALLEST MAN ON EARTH – ” The Running Styles Of New York ” | I Love You. It’s A Fever Dream.
Posted: March 12, 2019 in CLASSIC ALBUMS, MUSICTags: I Love You. It's A Fever Dream, Kristian Matsson, The Tallest Man On Earth

A decade-plus into his career and it seems that Kristian Matsson aka The Tallest Man On Earth is re-finding his voice. “The Running Styles of New York” finds its footing somewhere in the sweet spot between the raw, urgent work of Matsson’s early work and the lush-sounding output from his last few full-lengths, much like the songs on the tremendous EP he slowly revealed last year. It’s weird to say this after all this time, but I think this might be the best The Tallest Man on Earth has ever sounded.
Head and shoulders above the rest, Swedish indie folk star Kristian Matsson is The Tallest Man on Earth. Having got everyone excited with his newly released single ‘The Running Styles Of New York’, Matsson also announces a UK tour following his slot support Bon Ivor at All Points East.
“The Running Styles Of New York” is from The Tallest Man On Earth’s forthcoming album ‘I Love You. It’s A Fever Dream.’ out in April.
