Now that the summer seems to have finally been driven away, it is time for the dark autumn soundtracks, for which Marissa Nadler immediately sets the bar particularly high with the beautiful “The Path Of The Clouds
Marissa Nadler has been building a special and very beautiful oeuvre for 17 years now. I sometimes miss an album by the American musician, but fortunately I did not miss the release this week “The Path Of The Clouds”. Also on her new album Marissa Nadler draws for atmospheric and dreamy but also some dark sounds, for beautiful vocals and for a unique and often somewhat dark atmosphere that comes back in the equally dark stories. Compared to many of her previous albums, “The Path Of The Clouds” features a fuller and more melodic sound, which further enhances the power of the American musician’s songs. The umpteenth beautiful album by Marissa Nadler and perhaps her best.

Since her great debut album “Ballads Of Living And Dying“, which to my surprise is already 17 years old, I have been following the career of the American musician Marissa Nadler.

I have not always done that intensively, because although I have quite a few albums by the musician from Nashville in the closet, there are now also a lot missing.

In recent years I have certainly not been paying attention, because after the excellent Strangers from 2016, I have not noticed “Bury Your Name” from the same year, “For My Crimes” from 2018, “Instead Of Dreaming” from 2021 and “the Droneflower” released in 2019 and made together with rock musician Stephen Brodsky. The last album is not entirely dedicated to me, but all other albums certainly deserved a place on this BLOG with For My Crimes as a provisional favourite.
Fortunately, Marissa Nadler is also popping up this week with a new album, The Path Of The Clouds. The music of the American musician was originally mainly labelled indie folk and folk-noir, but in recent years Marissa Nadler has shifted towards indie rock.
The Path Of The Clouds” can work in all three of these genres and, like almost all other albums by the American musician, is a pretty dark or even dark album with a lot of influences from the ambient this time. The album also sounds dreamy at the same time, which creates a unique atmosphere.
Marissa Nadler has a beautiful voice, which could work well in sweet and whisper-soft folk songs, but somehow her music always has something dark. It is no different on “The Path Of The Clouds“, which despite the beautiful sounds and the beautiful voice of Marissa Nadler often sounds a bit spooky. It sometimes gives chills, but the special atmosphere on her albums is also the strength of the American musician.

The Path Of The Clouds” also does beautifully on rainy, dark and chilly evenings, although I keep the curtains closed and the door locked just to be sure. The music of Marissa Nadler was extremely sober in the past, but in recent years her music sounds just a bit fuller, which is partly the result of the collaboration with other musicians.
On The Path Of The Clouds, Mary Lattimore, Amber Webber (Black Mountain, Lightning Dust), Jesse Chandler (Mercury Rev), Emma Ruth Rundle and Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins, Lost Horizons) contribute to the music of Marissa Nadler, which still sounds subdued, but less Spartan and is just as easily provided with fairytale harp sounds as with gritty guitars.
The somewhat fuller and certainly more melodic sound on the new album has fortunately not been at the expense of the special atmosphere that Marissa Nadler creates on her albums and the vocals of the American musician are also wonderful.

On “The Path Of The Clouds”, Marissa Nadler draws for a series of beautiful songs and, as usual, for a number of dark stories such as the one about the canoe trip of the freshly married Glen and Bessie Hyde, of whom only one eventually returned and the story of the mysterious plane hijacker D.B. Cooper, who jumped out of the plane with his ransom and a parachute and disappeared from the face of the earth.
The bar has been set high for 17 years within the oeuvre of Marissa Nadler, but “The Path Of The Clouds “could just be her best album so far and every time I listen to the album it is even more beautiful, more urgent and more enchanting.

The WEATHER STATION – ” Ignorance “

Posted: November 14, 2021 in MUSIC

Ignorance“, the new album by the The Weather Station, begins enigmatically; a hissing hi hat, a stuttering drum beat. A full minute passes before the entry of Tamara Lindeman’s voice, gentle, conversational, intoning; “I never believed in the robber”. A jagged music builds, with stabbing strings, saxophone, and several layers of percussion, and the song undulates through five minutes of growing tension, seesawing between just two chords. Once again, Toronto songwriter Tamara Lindeman has remade what The Weather Station sounds like; once again, she has used the occasion of a new record to create a new sonic landscape, tailor-made to express an emotional idea. Ignorance, Lindeman’s debut for Mississippi label Fat Possum Records, is sensuous, ravishing, as hi fi a record as Lindeman has ever made, breaking into pure pop at moments, at others a dense wilderness of notes; a deeply rhythmic, deeply painful record that feels more urgent, more clear than her work ever has.

On the cover, Lindeman lays in the woods, wearing a hand made suit covered in mirrors. She was struck by the compulsion to build a mirror suit on tour one summer, assembling it in a hotel room in PEI and at a friend’s place in Halifax. “I used to be an actor, now I’m a performer” she says. In those roles, she points out, she often finds herself to be the subject of projection, reflecting back the ideas and emotions of others. On the album, she sings of trying to wear the world as a kind of ill fitting, torn garment, dangerously cold; “it does not keep me warm / I cannot ever seem to fasten it” and of walking the streets in it, so disguised, so exposed. Photographed by visual artist Jeff Bierk in midday, the cover purposefully calls to mind Renaissance paintings; with rich blacks and deep colour, and an incongruous blue sky glimpsed through the trees.

The title of the album, Ignorance, feels confrontational, calling to mind perhaps wilful ignorance, but Lindeman insists she meant it in a different context. In 1915 Virginia Woolfe wrote: “the future is dark, which is the best thing a future can be, I think.” Written amidst the brutal first world war, the darkness of the future connoted for Woolfe a not knowing, which by definition holds a sliver of hope; the possibility for something, somewhere, to change. In french, the verb ignorer connotes a humble, unashamed not knowing, and it is this ignorance Lindeman refers to here; the blank space at an intersection of hope and despair, a darkness that does not have to be dark. credits

New song “Galveston” out now! An ode to Galveston, Texas — the capital of ghosts and good memories

Texas quintet Why Bonnie have shared a new single/video, “Galveston,” via Fat Possum Records. Led by songwriter/vocalist Blair Howerton and joined by keyboardist Kendall Powell, guitarist Sam Houdek, bassist Chance Williams, and drummer Josh Malett, “Galveston” is wistful and draws on inspirations as broad as Sparklehorse and Sheryl Crow.

Built around a chiming guitar line, Howerton recalls childhood trips to the island city of Galveston, singing evocatively of “candyland beaches” and “the East Texas sunrise making a face.” Howerton elaborates: “An ode to Galveston, Texas — the capital of ghosts and good memories. One of the most literal recollections of growing up in Southeast Texas, ‘Galveston’ is a snapshot of an old childhood haunt.”

Speaking about the video, directed by Grace Pendleton, Howerton said: “I wanted the video to reflect the experience of digging through old memories which sometimes really feels like finding little spotlights coming through the darkness.”

Chuck Prophet - No Other Love [Indie Exclusive Limited Edition Red Splatter LP]

“No Other Love” is now on vinyl New West Records is proud to release this record on limited edition red splatter vinyl. “No Other Love” is the sixth album in a solo career that began when California native Chuck Prophet split from Green on Red in 1990. Green on Red helped lead the way for the insurgent country of the 1990s, but on his own Prophet has grown far beyond the category. His previous album, 2000’s “The Hurting Business”, was a striking breakthrough–hip-hop scratching and samples added to his bedrock country and R&B influences. “No Other Love” is maverick genre-bending in the manner of Beck and Jim White, and the stylistic variety suits Prophet’s compositions, peopled by crazed desperados and beautiful losers.

The songs run the gamut from the raunchy horn-driven swagger of “That’s How Much I Need Your Love” to the stinging, pleading “Elouise,” where his ever-inventive guitar vies with Farfisa organ. Prophet enjoys spicing songs with pop culture references, but his wry humour is counterbalanced by a strong moral undertow in “I Bow Down and Pray to Every Woman I See” and the beautiful “Summertime Thing.” This is a Prophet with plenty of honour.

No Other Love?” It’s hard to pin that record down exactly. I guess it’s a singer songwriter record. Out there on the fringes. Songs about dancing monkeys, failed criminals, and the storms that come between seasons. Judging from the liner notes, the production included a Chinese Menu of instruments. Aside from guitars and drums, the record features an Omnichord, a punchbowl, 45 RPM samples and string sections. It was recorded by Jim Waters (Jon Spencer, Sonic Youth etc) in Tucson, Oakland and San Francisco. Probably the best seller of my “career”. Thanks in no small part to the success of the radio friendly track “Summertime Thing”. We toured with Lucinda Williams the summer it came out. And put a whole mess of miles on the Econoline trying to keep up with her buses. Whenever I see Lucinda, to this day, I always tell her, “Lu, you put me on the map!”

This limited edition release will be pressed on red splatter vinyl at MPO in France. Mastered for vinyl by Jason NeSmith – Chase Park.

No Other Love” is now on vinyl for the first time outside of a limited German release in 2002. This release is limited to 4,000 copies worldwide

We’re Excited for the new Let’s Eat Grandma album with the release of two new singles, the previous album : ‘I’m All Ears’ was one of our favourite albums of 2018 which is such a long time ago. So, understandably, we’re thrilled to see electro-pop duo Let’s Eat Grandma back with their latest singles ‘Hall of Mirrors’ and the titular ‘Two Ribbons’. Confirmed in November last year, the new album ‘Two Ribbons’ already boasts a variety of sounds based on the first two singles and it’s certainly whet our appetite for more. Let’s Eat Grandma, the duo composed of songwriters, multi-instrumentalists and vocalists Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingworth, have shared their new single an upbeat, blissful song celebrating friendship, and the opening track from their upcoming much anticipated third full-length album Two Ribbons.

We can’t wait for this one!

Let’s Eat Grandma, the multi-instrumentalists have shared their new single “Happy New Year”, an upbeat, blissful song celebrating friendship, and the opening track from their upcoming much anticipated third full-length album

Rosa Walton said the following about the track:

“Happy New Year” is a celebratory song written about my relationship with my best friend. I wrote it after a breakdown between us that lasted for a long period of time, to communicate to her how important she is to me and how our bond and care for each other goes much deeper than this difficult time. I used the setting of New Year as both an opportunity for reflection, looking back nostalgically through childhood memories that we shared, and to represent the beginning of a fresh chapter for us. I’d been struggling to come to terms with the fact that our relationship had changed, but as the song and time progresses I come to accept that it couldn’t stay the way it was when we were kids forever, and start to view it as a positive thing – because now we have been able to grow into our own individual selves.”

Happy New Year” is the third song to be heard from “Two Ribbons“, following the album’s stunning, melancholic title track and the ethereal, glistening pop song “Hall Of Mirrors”.

Let’s Eat Grandma’s two special and intimate early 2022 shows at Norwich Arts Centre on 26th January and at XOYO in London on 27th January are now sold out.

Two Ribbons”, Let’s Eat Grandma’s third album will be out on Transgressive Records , It’s been a long time in the works and we can’t wait for you to hear it

Let’s Eat Grandma, “Two Ribbons” will be released on 8 April 2022 via Transgressive Records

May be an image of text that says 'LAUREL HELL mitski လ'

If we thought Mitski’s “Working for the Knife” video provided a dramatic return for the songwriter, who took a brief hiatus following the release of 2018’s overwhelmingly acclaimed LP “Be the Cowboy“, nothing could have really prepared us for the level of drama compressed into the three-and-a-half minute visual for the follow-up single “The Only Heartbreaker.” In addition to arriving with the news of a new LP called “Laurel Hell” that’s slated for release in early 2022, and to introducing a heavy new wave vibe to the release, the “Heartbreaker” visual sees Mitski continuing to interpretive dance to her new music as the fantasy planet she inhabits—Laurel Hell?—goes up in flames.

According to Mitski, the song addresses “the person always messing up in the relationship, the designated Bad Guy who gets the blame. It could simply be about that, but I also wanted to depict something sadder beneath the surface, that maybe the reason you’re always the one making mistakes is because you’re the only one trying.”

“The worst pain I’ve experienced is when I’ve fully understood the pain I’ve caused another,” adds Maegan Houang, who co-directed the visual with Jeff Desom. “It’s one of the hardest parts of being human, that no matter our intentions, we’ll inevitably do something hurtful to our fellow man, if not someone we love. In this case, the harm Mitski enacts in the video is to the world. It’s unstoppable and destructive, but worst of all, she doesn’t even want it to happen. She’s a stand-in for humanity as we collectively do so little to save ourselves and our planet.”

“The Only Heartbreaker” the new song by Mitski from the forthcoming album ‘Laurel Hell’, out February 4th 2022 on Dead Oceans Records.

SASAMI – ” The Greatest “

Sasami (aka Los Angeles-based musician Sasami Ashworth) has announced the release of a new album titled “Squeeze”. It will be out on February 25 via Domino Recordings. Ashworth also shared videos for two new singles: “The Greatest” and “Skin a Rat,” and announced a headlining U.S. tour for 2022. Jennifer Juniper Stratford directed the video for “The Greatest” and Andrew Thomas Huang (FKA twigs, Björk) shot the album’s cover art.

“The Greatest,” which is a bit more inline with Ashworth’s previous work, makes the main Top 10 list. The heavier “Skin a Rat” can be found further below. Regarding the new song, Ashworth states in a press release: “This song is about how often the greatest, heaviest feelings we have for someone are in the absence of the realization or reciprocation of that love. Like power born out of a black hole. All fantasy.”

The single was produced by Ashworth along with the rest of the album, which also features production from a handful of contributors, including Ty Segall, Hand Habits’ Meg Duffy, and King Tuff’s Kyle Thomas.

Sasami and her new full-length Squeeze, with both songs were produced by Ashworth and recorded at Ty Segall’s studio in Topanga, CA and Log Mansion in Mt. Washington. Squeeze was produced by SASAMI, with a handful of the tracks co-produced by Ty Segall. Other notable contributors include: Meg Duffy, King Tuff’s Kyle Thomas, Christian Lee Hutson, Barishi, Moaning’s Pascal Stevenson, Jay Bellerose and No Home.

Of the power ballad-inspired “The Greatest” Sasami Ashworth says “this song is about how often the greatest, heaviest feelings we have for someone are in the absence of the realization or reciprocation of that love. Like power born out of a black hole. All fantasy.”

Inspired by violent fantasy, “Skin A Rat” is “a soundtrack to cathartic release of anger and frustration with oppressive systems and humans. Very nu-metal influenced. Wrote and demoed the whole song on my ipad with midi drums and hired an epic drummer to perform it live to tape.” The song features Dirk Verbeuren of Megadeth on drums and gang vocals by Vagabon’s Laetitia Tamko and actress and comedian Patti Harrison.

Squeeze” hammers home a sentiment of “anti-toxic positivity” and showcases Sasami’s vicious honesty and brutally uncompromising vision, partially inspired by the Japanese yōkai folk spirit called Nure-onna (translation: wet woman), a vampiric deity that has the head of a woman and the body of a snake.

Sasami is a descendent of the Zainichi people on her mother’s side, a diaspora of ethnic Koreans who lived in Japan during Japan’s occupation of Korea from 1910 to 1945. Though some Zainichi moved voluntarily and others were forcibly kidnapped, these people and their progeny continue to experience systemic discrimination and oppression in Japan to this day. While conducting a deep dive into her family’s mixed Korean and Japanese history and culture, Sasami stumbled upon stories of Nure-onna and was immediately drawn to the water creature’s multiplicitous nature. According to legend, the deity is feminine and noble, yet powerful and vicious enough to brutally destroy victims with her blood sucking tongue.

Ashworth’s self-titled debut album, Sasami, came out in 2019 via Domino Recordings. “The Greatest” and “Skin A Rat” from the forthcoming album ‘Squeeze’ out 25 February 2022 on Domino Record co.

Lucy Dacus announces 2022 tour, shares new version of “Thumbs”

Lucy Dacus is heading on tour next year. The singer-songwriter, who shared her wonderful third album “Home Video” this summer, will embark on dates across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe from early February to mid-April with Indigo De Souza and Fenne Lilly opening.

Along with the tour announcement, Dacus has shared a new full-band version of the Home Video song “Thumbs.” A fan favourite long before it was officially released, “Thumbs” in its original incarnation set Dacus’s heartbreaking description of familial trauma on top of plush synth chords. For “Thumbs Again,” Dacus adds a torrent of new instrumentation without overwhelming what made the stripped-down original special.

Listen to the new full-band version of the Lucy Dacus song “Thumbs” from the album ‘Home Video.’

Dacus spoke about the composition of “Thumbs”. “I think the last line of the song is like the whole purpose of the song. Just to say that like you don’t owe anybody shit, or anybody that feels entitled to your time or they own you is just wrong. Yeah. It’s ultimately a victorious, supportive type of song, but it’s just pretty bleak.”
