The Lunar Festival is a newcomer to the scene,  and one of the earlier festivals at the start of the season, brought to us by the organisers of other Midlands events like Moseley Folk festival.  It may not have the scale of the more established boutique gatherings, but its eccentric theatrical line-up marks it out as a special event in the festival year.  Set near the birthplace of Nick Drake, this intimate family festival joins the dots across everything from funk and soul to jazz and African sounds, electronic space explorations, psych and indie.  Alongside new talent, last year saw the eccentric brilliance of Arthur Brown and  The Polyphonic Spree; this year we’re treated to performances from idiosyncratic rebels Julian Cope and Wilko Johnson. There may not be as much in a way of additional entertainment, but the music line-up and its beautiful farm setting (complete with bemused horses, donkeys, pigs and cows) make for a very special experience that can endure the calamities of June weather.

Music highlights: Allah-Las, The Fall, Jane Weaver, Julian Cope, Pretty Things, Public Service Broadcasting, Sun Ra Arkestra, Tinariwen, Wilko Johnson

Tickets and full line-up information: http://lunarfestival.co.uk

The full line up is nearly complete which will be announced in late January along with the days that the artists will be performing! We are hugely excited about this announcement as its looking very special indeed!

The line-up’s been announced for this year’s Live at Leeds, taking place 1st-4th May 2015. With the all-day music event running on 2nd May 2015, big names have been confirmed in the shape of local heroes Hookworms and EagullsTobias Jesso Jr. and Oceaán are also on the bill, with Swim Deep – finishing off their second record, due out this year – also set to play.

The first big names to catch the eye include Carl Barat & The Jackals – whose debut album Let It Reign is due to drop in a fortnight’s time – London’s much heralded bucolic folk rockers Dry The River; those art-rock cerebralists Dutch Uncles; Thurston Moore and another man with an illustrious past, the former Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes,; as well as Leeds’ very own noise merchants Eagulls and their fellow Leodians the mighty Hookworms, all of whom affirm the festival’s core principle for promoting local talent alongside established international acts

An quite wonderful looking undercard already boasts garage rockers Slaves – who will be in Leeds later this month on the NME Awards Tour – rising pop quartet Lawson, the Grammy nominated singer and producer MNEK, the electric fuzz-pop of Cardiff’s Joanna Gruesome, indie-rockersSpector and MOBO Award winner Stormzy

deershed

The family friendly music, arts and science festival has just unveiled its first band announcements for this year’s event. Now firmly established as one of the jewels in the Northern festival crown, Deer Shed returns for its sixth annual outing over the last weekend July. And what a weekend it promises to be if the first artists for Deer Shed Festival 6 are anything to go by.

The term ‘family festival’ was invented to describe Deer Shed. In fact, if you don’t have any offspring in tow you may feel a little out of place. Even its comedy tent is PG-rated.  There is a huge array of children’s activities and family-friendly entertainment.  It would all be very village fete were it not for the fact that Deer Shed’s music-line up is pretty spot on. There are definitely some heritage acts to entertain the parents but there is also plenty of interesting new sounds and names familiar to 6 Music connoisseurs.  As you may imagine, the crowds are very polite, the toilets are clean and the mood is happy. Sadly, most of the fun draws to a close at around midnight, with only one venue open till 2 am and most of the entertainment ending on Sunday afternoon.

Music highlights: Billy Bragg, Boxed In, Emmy the Great, Honeyblood, John Grant,Menace Beach, The Pictish Trail, Shopping, The Unthanks, The Wedding Present

Tickets and full line-up information: http://deershedfestival.com

For DSF6 we welcome John Grant, Billy Bragg, The Unthanks, The Wedding Present, Dan Croll, The Felice Brothers, Ibibio Sound Machine, Honeyblood, Black Rivers, Emmy The Great, Damien Dempsey, James Yorkston, Diagrams, Menace Beach, Kiran Leonard, The Pictish Trail, The Lost Brothers, Lisa O’Neill, Fatherson, Eliza Shaddad, Curtis Eller, Rozi Plain, Cattle And Cane, Serious Sam Barrett, Furs, Maia and Deborah Rose with much more music still to come in the coming weeks http://www.deershedfestival.com/music

Recorded by SDR 3  at Festival – Reitstadion, Stuttgart, 21, August, 1994, At the time of this concert, Rory was becoming very ill due to liver failure, hence the bloating. He collapsed on stage while performing in Jan ’95, had a liver transplant and died 14 June 1995 after contracting MRSA while still in the hospital recovering.  Regardless of his appearance and ill health, Rory remained the most amazing guitarist that has ever graced this earth.

A fantastic song writer too, who not only played the blues but wrote some of the most fantastic rock songs ever but some how he never really received the rightful recognition that he really deserved. Just listen to “Overnight Bag” or “Brute Force and Ignorance” “Souped Up Ford” the least goes on and on ,

Flo Morrissey at 17 she uploaded a song she wrote to the internet, with a video starring her sisters, and it was spotted by Devendra Banhart’s manager, who she now works with. She is signed to Glassnote Records, the label that helped Mumford & Sons and CHVRCHES make it, and this summer her beautiful, folky sets were a highlight of Green Man Festival, Wilderness and SXSW.
Much of her music is inspired by her family, and if Morrissey is tired of being asked about them she shows no sign of it. “My family are a really big focus, not just on what I write but what I wear and who I am.”. Music was always around when she was growing up. “My mum studied piano to grade eight and my dad has good music taste — he introduced me to Devendra Barnhart.”
She’s recently returned from recording her debut album in Los Angeles and is honing material ahead of the release of her first single, Pages of Gold, in November and the album early next year , soundcloud.com/flomorrissey

ARCADE FIRE – ” Festi “

Arcade Fire mini-movie about the band on tour in 2011, and their summer of Festivals.
Arcade Fire, avid fans of quirky costumes galore, have unveiled a delightfully scary treat in celebration of Halloween: a horror film! Directed by “Noreen Bauble,” one of the band’s many monikers, “Festi” is a truly bizarre 21-minute visual that takes a look back at their 2011 summer festival tour. The best part of the flick, however, might be its star-studded cast in James Murphy, Fleet Foxes, The National, Peter Gabriel, Slash, and Andrew Garfield, among others.

While the film is focused around Win Butler’s 27th birthday, things take a turn for the worst when the curse of the 27 Club rears its ugly head and the band has to deal with murder, mystery, and, yes, even Jim Morrison’s ghost. Things to definitely look out for: James Murphy playing the role of “sad DJ”, The Dessner brothers from the band “The National” as freaky twins, and Slash belting out “Sweet Child O’ Mine”.
