Previously released on vinyl in 1997 British space rock band Spectrum is a project led by Peter Kember under the pseudonym Sonic Boom; an English singer and record producer. He was a founding member, bassist, vocalist and guitarist of alternative rock band Spacemen 3, lasting from 1982 until the band’s dissolution in 1991.
He provided the production on MGMT’s sophomore album Congratulations, Panda Bear’s albums Tomboy and Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper, and Beach House’s seventh album, eponymously titled ‘7’. As a solo artist, Kember has recorded as Spectrum and E.A.R.(Experimental Audio Research), parallel musical projects with recordings under both names occasionally only featuring Kember.
He has occasionally performed live under both monikers, most recently as Spectrum, touring as a band in America and Europe. Kember has also played and collaborated with a number of artists, including Stereolab and Yo La Tengo.
‘Forever Alien’ is the third studio album by Spectrum. It was originally released in August 1997 by Space Age Recordings and has long been out of print on vinyl. After the band’s preceding EP ‘Songs for Owsley’ moved away from guitar-oriented music and towards electronic music, ‘Forever Alien’ furthered this approach considerably, as Kember aimed to create a predominately electronic album that sounded organic and analogue in style. The record is dominated by vintage analogue synthesizers, including the EMS VCS 3 and EMS Synthi AKS. Kember had become fascinated by the synths as he felt they presented him with more musical possibilities than guitars. The resulting album fuses psychedelic music with influences from the 1960s electronic music of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.
The track ‘Feels Like I’m Slipping Away’ from the album was released as a single and ‘Forever Alien’ had modest radio success in the US and also received acclaim from critics. Musicians such as Helena Hauff and Ekoplekz have since cited it among their favourite albums. Will Carruthers (ex-Spacemen 3) joined Spectrum on their 1997 tour in support of the album. Now re-mastered by John Rivers at Woodbine Street Studio especially for vinyl release for Record Store Day 2020.

a swaggering, louche, loungey sound that should appeal to fans of Nick Cave and Tindersticks” – BrooklynVegan
marries a hearty balance of rich, comfortingly worn rhythms and dashes of cutting exuberance – crafting something unified and unsuspectingly poetic” – So Young
The London based country-infused rock quintet Sleep Eaters are ready to unveil their debut EP Holy Days on August 9 via Stockholm’s PNKSLM Recordings. Having become one of London’s most talked about new acts for their country-infused take on garage rock, Sleep Eaters have spent the past year honing their craft on stage and in the studio, recently supporting Drahla on their UK tour while drawing praise from the likes of So Young and Clash. Holy Days was recorded with Euan Hinshelwood of Younghusband and will be followed by live dates during the fall.
Lilting between the eerie and the ethereal, White Flowers debut is an album for off-kilter dreaming and wandering at dusk. Following their stints as art students, Katie Drew and Joey Cobb returned to Preston, taking the capital’s psych influence with them. Welding cascading loops with petal-delicate vocals, the duo experimented with sonic equipment and visual craft; cultivating a realm of drifting soundscapes and monochrome blooms. The release of their debut album, ‘Day by Day’, we caught up with the pair to uncover the processes behind the record.
“Day by Day” was actually written a few years ago but has taken on an eerie relevance in light of current events. As the title suggests, the song explores living in the present moment as a way of overcoming difficulties and growing stronger. Written during a dark time in our lives the song is about the struggle of carrying on, taking each day at a time in hope that things will eventually get better”
Co-produced by Doves’ guitarist, Jez Williams, “Day By Day” picks up where debut “Night Drive” left off, fragile, and amorphous, driven by a Kevin Shields-esque drone and underpinned by Katie Drew’s beautiful and delicate vocal.
Recorded at The Cumberland Arms, Newcastle.

Sleep Eaters are a five piece Country Garage experience from South London!. Their debut EP ‘Holy Days’ OUT now via PNKSLM. London, UK country garage quintet Sleep Eaters is sharing new music in the midst of covid-19 quarantine in the shape of “In This Town”, which is in fact the very first track the band recorded together two years ago – before the acclaimed debut EP Holy Days which was released in August 2019 to acclaim from KEXP, So Young and more. Produced by Younghusband’s Euan Hinshelwood and mastered by Pete Maher who’s worked with everyone from The Rolling Stones to Nick Cave, it’s a stopgap release to tide everyone over during the quarantine, with a full-length scheduled for next year.
Here’s The Kyvu Tapes Vol.3, Some more tracks I’ve found from my cassette transfers a couple of years ago, and re-explored recently to see what else is there. It’s a strange thing, going down a lot of memory lanes and remembering the people I met, the way that I felt.. or the people I didn’t meet and the alienation, an alienation that seems similar now.All the tracks were recorded between 1989-92 . Most tracks were recorded in Cornwall at my mum’s house in a village called The Lizard. A mesmerising part of the world overlooking the Atlantic and Kynance Cove, a strange rock that adds to the mystery of the place. These were times of intense self-exploration, ocean gazing and loneliness.
Other tracks were recorded in a basement flat in Shepherds Bush, London where I lived on my own for a few months in 1991. I have some nice memories of being there seeing lots of great bands and spending a lot of time working in peace, having moved to London for the first time.
And finally I think Zero Point may have been recorded when I lived in Cambridge for a while or in Seven Sisters back in London. I moved around or moved house/town/city quite a lot back then but would often, and inevitably, find myself retreating back to the tranquility and desolate beauty of The Lizard where I would find and lose myself, recuperate, dreams and fears intertwined, walking across a strange and dramatic landscape, staring at the sea and wondering what might lie ahead if only I could make something happen.
I can now hear elements of what would become The Oscillation.
It’s a great liberation and consolidation to get these old recordings out there. I ain’t claiming to split the atom here, but thanks for listening, and if you enjoy any of it, or it helps your mood or day, that makes me happy.
Nottingham indie rock newcomers Do Nothing have shared a new track. ‘Fits’ that comes with the announcement that they’ll be releasing EP ‘Zero Dollar Bill’ on 10th April, which will also include previous single ‘LeBron James’. Zero Dollar Bill EP is the debut release from Do Nothing, childhood friends vocalist Chris Bailey, guitarist Kasper Sandstrom, bassist Charles Howarth and Andrew Harrison on drums. Speaking about new single ‘Fits’, Bailey said: “This song came about relatively naturally. It’s about that sad little feeling of drifting away from things that meant a lot to you when you were younger. I wanted to write something about my big brother, and what came out sounds somewhat sarcastic, but is actually a quite sincere love song to him and our childhoods. He’s called Benji, and I don’t see him enough.”
The EP muses on the state of the world as well as Bailey’s own personal experiences in the past several years since the formation of Do Nothing. “There’s a lot of finger-pointing, yelling and confusion,” he begins. “And as much of an ordeal as that sounds I think it’s quite fun. The point is that confusion is important! It’s basically the currency that I deal in.”
‘Fits’ is the ideal counterpart to ‘LeBron James’, a window into the band’s incendiary live show, providing more acerbic lyricism in the lineage of LCD Soundsystem and an air of Talking Heads’ intoxicating pop – it marks another watershed moment for the band following a remarkable rise last year. Do Nothing have also shared the video for rousing track “Contraband”, taken from their excellent five track debut EP out now on their own imprint Exact Truth.
Their mix of skewed art-pop, full on acerbic rage and mordant black humour are all well to the fore in the video!. Of the new song, frontman Chris Bailey explains: “This song came about relatively naturally. It’s about that sad little feeling of drifting away from things that meant a lot to you when you were younger. I wanted to write something about my big brother, and what came out sounds somewhat sarcastic, but is actually a quite sincere love song to him and our childhoods.
