Blaenavon - Let’s Pray

Blaenavon love a good juxtaposition. Dishing out shiny, perky guitar lines for fun, they’re also specialists in brutally dark, romantic imagery. “Let’s pray, let’s pray, let’s pray for death!” isn’t exactly the kind of chorus you’d want your kids singing at the dinner table, but don’t rule out it spreading like wildfire.

As an instrumental, ‘Let’s Pray’ would be a sweet, sunny-side-up indie banger, fit for Match of the Day goal montages. Combined with Ben Gregory’s bewitched tales, it becomes something beautifully twisted, like playing frisbee in a graveyard. Blaenavon’s frontman is skilled at embracing his own mortality, turning dark thoughts into pop gold.

Skip a Sinking Stone

Three years on from the release of their critically acclaimed debut, Mutual Benefit have returned with a stellar album which mixes a healthy dose of realism into their lush and dreamy style of folk.

Skip A Sinking Stone pushes Mutual Benefit into more mature and less pretentious territory. Musically, the album is still very similar to Love’s Crushing Diamond – the opening track, “Madrugada”, bears a passing resemblance to “Strong River”, the first song from their debut.

If the hustle and bustle of the big wide world is well and truly getting on your wick cop a load of this slice of laid back chamber pop tinged loveliness from Mutual Benefit (AKA Jordan Lee and an ever changing collective of his buddies). It’s taken from brand new album Skip A Sinking Stone out on reliably excellent Transgressive Records on May 20th and there’s an all too rare UK show at Bush Hall, London on April 28th.

Placed at the end of the first side, and before the nocturnal side, “Not For Nothing” plants a resolute flagpole in the middle of the album. It’s the most hopeful interpretation of the album’s core premise, that no matter how far you happen to skip a stone, it will always sink. In “Not for Nothing”, Lee sees the flight of the stone as the most important aspect of the image – it’s the journey which matters, not the destination.

Blaenavon: huge Marseille fans

The best and biggest highlights of SXSW is seeing one of your own young artists smash their debut US gigs for the first time, converting an audience and a curious industry in the process. Blaenavon are a band that are signed to Transgressive Records officially last year, three whole years after meeting them (when they were still in school). Their blend of anthemic yet sensitive guitar-driven frenzies have never sounded more compelling than in recent live shows, and their soon-to-be-completed debut album with producer Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys, Adele et al) is sounding like it could be one of the biggest records of the year.

With team Transgressive providing the industry oomph, and the guiding arm around the shoulder, there’s no reason Blaenavon can’t do whatever they desire. After Thursday’s display of growth, intelligent writing and emphatic performance, the only safe bet would be on their success.

Official music video for Blaenavon ‘Hell Is My Head’ from their EP ‘Miss World’ out October 30th on Transgressive Records

Watch the latest track ‘Dragon‘ by Blaenavon, filmed exclusively for Burberry Acoustic,

Blaenavon have recorded a stunning version of ‘Dragon’, taken from their recent ‘Miss World’ EP, for Burberry Acoustic.  Filmed in Manchester’s historic Albert Hall, the band strip the song right back to its basic elements. The laid back new track in the shape of “Dragons”, thus completing their EP – which is available to stream on their soundcloud page. Their EP is released via Transgressive Records (one of my favourite labels)

Hippo Campus: Since SXSW the Minneapolis indie-rockers have been on the radar for all the biggest Indie blogs and websites. Their intricate riffs and spritely lyrics will ring especially sweet for any fans of Dutch Uncles, Vampire Weekend or Wu Lyf.

Transgressive Records release ‘The Halocline Eps’, a combination of Hippo Campus’ first EP ‘Bashful Creatures’ and latest EP ‘South’. It’s another exciting step for a brilliant young band that are quickly becoming darlings in the UK. Previous efforts ‘Suicide Saturday’ and ‘South’ have seen them named as Huw Stephens’ Single Of The Week and led to sessions for BBC Radio 1 and XFM, whilst The Guardian, NME, DIY and Q have all marked Hippo Campus out as a band to keep a serious eye on. Hippo Campus are four Minnesotan boys making music that is infectious, joyful, and thematically soaked with the sense of cynicism accompanying the youthful search of self-meaning. The band met in High School and are still yet to hit legal drinking age but following an explosive SXSW – which marked their first shows outside their native town – the four teenagers signed to legendary indie label Transgressive Records. ‘Violet’, from the band’s new single, also marks something of a milestone in a year that has seen Hippo Campus evolve from playing packed shows in their hometown of Minnesota to touring both sides of the pond with the likes of Modest Mouse, Walk The Moon, Real Estate and My Morning Jacket. Explosive performances at SXSW (the band ended the festival with a live appearance on US talk show Conan), The Great Escape and Reading and Leeds festivals have further set the band out as ones to watch for 2016.

The London band have released the latest visuals for their track ‘Fill my Gums With Blood’, taken from their amazing debut LP on Transgressive Recordings A Dream Outside” leaving the video to get a little messy.

With a soiree on to the stages of Reading and Leeds festival set for this weekend Gengahr are looking to capitalise on their critical acclaim and turn cult status in to a clamouring crowd and a bouncing field.

Following the announcement of their UK Tour in November the band had this to say about ‘Fill My Gums With Blood’.

“The second time we went in to the studio we recorded the demo version of this song. Similarly to ‘She’s A Witch’ We liked the vibe of the demo so much that when it came to the album version we ended up going back to this version and just re-recording a few bits before mixing it again. This was the first song of ours that got played on the radio so in a way it feels a little bit like our breakthrough song on the album.”

The transition from supporting cast member to lead player isn’t always a simple step, but San Felu – aka Patrick James Pearson – makes it seem effortless with his debut outing ‘Cape of Good Hope’.

The track – a mesmerising four minute mini-epic full of filmic beauty, Nick Cave-esque scene setting and Patrick’s purring baritone – is the first artist release by San Felu, until now best known for his collaborative production work with rising singer Grace Lightman and acclaimed London band Liu Bei.

Following a year of intense touring as a live member of Transgressive Records band Dry the River, Patrick made the decision to return to his childhood home in Devon to concentrate on his own work, and to finish off ideas he had started on the road.

Inspired by the records he’d played constantly on tour – Sun Kil Moon, Sharon Van Etten, The National – and the Kurt Vonnegut and Richard Yates books he’d read and re-read, San Felu took his blueprints to Middle Farm Studio in Devon and, with the help of producer and engineer Peter Miles (We Are the Ocean, Sweet Billy Pilgrim, Dry the River), began to build elegantly surreal musical landscapes in which to place his surreally elegant stories; the result, as heard on ‘Cape of Good Hope’, is utterly enthralling.

Ahead of the new Gengahr album, We did a Fugazi cover, hope you like it! Our album is available for pre-order at gengahr.com if you do.

If being doe-eyed came with it’s own personal soundtrack, it would be written by Gengahr, and I mean that as an absolute compliment; the London quartet are like the “Girls” the UK never had. Soft spoken and delicately delivered, Gengahr have just produced an argent take on post-hardcore icons Fugazi’s “I’m So Tired”, which appears on the soundtrack to their Instrument documentary and remains one of the few examples of Ian Mackaye singing an actual melody.

Originally a minimal piano arrangement, Gengahr have drowned the track in a whirlpool of reverb, harmony and topped it off with 30 seconds of rightrous shredding. Somehow, the result is even more wistful than a fed up Ian Mackaye counting proverbial black sheep.

Picking up where 2014 left off Gengahr marked out their intentions for 2015 with an opening slot on Alt-J’s European tour and the release of the gloriously spellbinding ‘She’s A Witch’, which received acclaim from the likes of The Sunday Times, Independent, DIY and NME
