Currently in the midst of her debut UK tour, Melbourne’s BATTS has this week shared her new video to the excellent single Shame. The track is the latest taster off BATTS’ upcoming debut album, the follow-up to the superb, space-themed EP, 62 Stars.

While still with one eye on the skies, Shame is in many ways more rooted to Earth than BATTS has ever previously been. The track tackles the great shame of our age, the gradual, or perhaps all too rapid, destruction of our planet, “I was hoping that the way that we think, is not the way that we’ll think in a little while, honey I’m losing hope.” The track casts the romantic notion of shooting off to another planet where, “Bowie watches us through the stars”, while ultimately knowing that is not the answer to our issues. BATTS’ message is delivered with her most musically impressive offering to date; the prominent tumbling bass accompanied by delightfully loose guitar work and the stunning vocal, the middle ground of Angel Olsen’s clipped tones and Lucy Dacus’ more emotive, held notes. BATTS might dream of floating off to the stars, pretty soon she’s going to be a very bright star in her own right.

Batts is the moniker for the mesmerising and melancholic Melbourne based musician Tanya Batt. Citing musical influences such as Sigur Ros, Bon Iver and Stevie Nicks, it’s no surprise that BATTS’ music is both emotional and powerfully executed. Inspired heavily by Space, her love for 60’s music and the influence of being raised in the UK during the 90’s shines through creating a familiar yet current sound.

Shame is a song inspired by Batts’ love of 60’s music and the influence of being raised in the UK during the 90’s. The song covers many topics and Batts voices her want for a positive change to humankind and to all the negative things currently happening.

Recently  signed to THAA Records alongside lanks as their first two signings. What an absolute dream come true! To infinity and beyond

The project of Melbourne-based Tanya Batt immediately draws delicious shoe gaze comparisons to the likes of Mazzy StarHer sound is intricately layered with a bass backdrop that ties it all together. We love its blend of mellow rock and personal storytelling. She explains the track like this: “Little White Lies just came out all at once, it’s about how pretty much every interaction with anyone seems to be filled with these little white lies, whether it’s just easier to reply ‘Good’ when someone asks you how you are, or being late and making up a little white lie to cover your back. The world is filled with them and I don’t think we even realise we are doing it anymore, whether it’s a stranger or someone close to you, it just happens..” BATTS has been garnering a lot of fans lately within the music community and will only continue to do so with her beautifully crafted sound.

Batts

Melbourne musician Batts (aka Tanya Batt) has just released her brand new single “For Now”. The track is a slight change of direction for Batts who has been very electronically influenced in recent years but “For Now” is more acoustically driven with an ambient slant you’d expect from artists like Bon Iver or Daughter. Formerly focusing on Electronic Trip-Hop with producer Ficci, BATTS has branched off on her own and has made the transition back to her roots. Inspired mostly by folk artists, Batts has reinvented her sound with her newest single ‘For Now’ which explores multiple genres combined with the inspiration from space, creating a spacey dream pop vibe.

We really love everything Batts does and this is one of our favourite tracks yet mixed by Hayden Calnin
