It’s just a single 19 minute EP, rather than a full album. But the first recordings by Melbourne Australia’s The Outdoor Type will make you thirst for more. The group has a bright alterna-pop-rock sound, made intimate by folky harmonicas and sweet melodies. Zack Buchanan leads the five man band, using conversational vocals that make obvious his Aussie accent. He’s at his most earnest in “Day To Day”,which features a Groundhog Day-like plot. Even better is the single, “On My Mind”  which may be the catchiest song of this summer. It has a witty, deadpan vocal and a Velvet Underground riff that’s pure bliss.

Is Melbourne, Australia home to Earth’s greatest music scene? The latest evidence is Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, a band of cousins and brothers who established their krautrock-meets-jangle-pop sound a couple years ago with the overlooked Talk Tight EP. Rather than mess with the formula, they returned this year with The French Press, and this time the music world, from Australia to America, sat up and took notice. It spills over with urgent efficiency, motorik grooves, snappy bass lines and electric guitars that sparkle and slice through the rhythmic tension. Melodically, Rolling Blackouts offset their tightly wound sound with a sort of speak-singing looseness that recalls fellow Aussie Courtney Barnett, another Melbourne export.

Batts

Melbourne musician Batts (aka Tanya Batt) has just released her brand new single “For Now”. The track is a slight change of direction for Batts who has been very electronically influenced in recent years but “For Now” is more acoustically driven with an ambient slant you’d expect from artists like Bon Iver or Daughter. Formerly focusing on Electronic Trip-Hop with producer Ficci, BATTS has branched off on her own and has made the transition back to her roots. Inspired mostly by folk artists, Batts has reinvented her sound with her newest single ‘For Now’ which explores multiple genres combined with the inspiration from space, creating a spacey dream pop vibe.

We really love everything Batts does and this is one of our favourite tracks yet mixed by Hayden Calnin

Masters of crafting the most endearing indie rock we’ve heard in 2016, Melbourne three-piece Loose Tooth are unleashing their brand new EP via Milk! Records titled Saturn Returns. The EP was recorded and mixed by Paul Maybury (Rocket Science, Pink Tiles) and mastered by Mikey Young. Like their first single ‘Everything Changes’ devouring this EP has just made us hungrier for more sweet, sweet Loose Tooth in not-too-distant future.

The debut EP from Melbourne three-piece Loose Tooth on 180gms wax for your listening pleasure. Out April 1st, 2016.
Life-long friends Etta Curry and Nellie Jackson met in crèche and spent nap time dreaming of creating a heavenly racket. Long-time friend Luc Dawson was drafted in on bass to transform their pop sketches into the sort of songs that stick in your head for days. Whether spluttering to life on an empty tank or hitting harmonies in full flight, seeing LOOSE TOOTH really is a beautiful thing.
