When Alicia Bognanno came forth with her debut album Feels Like under the pseudonym Bully in 2015, it was relatively easy to compare her lucid, diary-entry songwriting and throaty head-screams to dozens of 90s’ indie powerhouses.

These comparisons were appropriate at the time – Feels Like was 31 restless minutes of explosive indie guitar-rock, with a timeless appeal boasting 90s’ nostalgia and emotional self-revelations. But as time passed, Feels Like aged adequately, and each listen felt more refreshing than the last. Minute production details that were once unnoticed began to show – courtesy of Bognanno’s tenure at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio studios in Chicago – and Feels Like became a vital document for heady 90s’ indie-rock revivalists.

Now two years wiser, Bognanno has returned with the follow up, and her Sub Pop debut, Losing – an album even more focused and emphatic than its predecessor.

US trio Bully like to mimic their live performance on record; a sound that’s frenetic, raw, vulnerable, and pulses with tension from start to finish. For frontwoman Alicia Bognanno, this year feels like the perfect time for the band’s return, with their sophomore record, Losing – the band’s first release with legendary label Sub Pop Records (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Sleater Kinney).

The same raw intensity that made fans fall under Bognanno’s spell in 2015 is still very much present, but this time around Bognanno sounds more self-assured. Whether it’s the muscular bass riffs on “Running,” the despairing chorus of “Feel the Same,” or the repetitive drum-rolls and cries on “Not the Way,” Bognanno is her finest and purest self on Losing.

Per usual, Bognanno’s perennial hooks and screams are felt with a stubborn sense of irritability and angst, ripping off old emotional band-aids in attempts to decipher the complexities of aging. Suffice to say, Alicia Bognanno is in her prime as a musician, songwriter, and producer, and somehow comes out of Losing better than before, proving herself as one of the most consistent and impressive artists of the decade.

After Kyle Craft wrapped up the recording of his upcoming (all originals) 2018 album, he decided to record a cover of a Jenny Lewis song for fun. This quickly spiraled into a full fledged project with Kyle recording a slew of songs by his favorite female singers.  Working with his bandmate, Kevin Clark in their home studio after hours, Craft multi-tracked all the parts himself, and what started as an idle aside became a labour of love.

Now Sub Pop Records and Kyle Craft have picked ten favorites from the sessions to release as Girl Crazy, a series of 2-track singles rolling out weekly starting in September.   Focusing on Kyle Craft’s acclaimed interpretive talents – his version of Bowie’s “Heroes” stole the show at Newport 2017 –“Girl Crazy” introduces audiences, who may know Craft from his Sub Pop debut album Dolls of Highland, to another side of the artist.  The series will run every Thursday through October 5th, and also features covers of artists like Sharon Van Etten, Jenny Lewis, Cher and Patsy Cline.

The soaring choruses, rousing anthems, sprawling guitars and chaotic keys that make up Wolf Parade are on proud display over the course of Cry Cry Cry, the band’s thunderous first album in seven years.

That unique combination of sounds and influences, spearheaded by electric co-frontmen Spencer Krug and Dan Boeckner—a complex yet relatable, energetic brew of glam, prog, synth-rock, and satisfying discomfort—helped define 2000s indie rock with three critically celebrated albums, and propelled a growing Wolf Parade fandom even after the band went on a then-indefinite hiatus in 2010.

Chad VanGaalen’s Shrink Dust was a hidden gem in 2014, with galactic psych reverb spilling over jangly guitars and weird, spaced-out lyrics. Light Information keeps the formula intact: danceable indie rock with an experimental streak and nimble storytelling. Lead single “Old Heads” is a sci-fi anthem to technology that constantly replaces itself, proving both necessary and unnecessary at the same time. Chad VanGaalen is sincerely one of my favorite artists. I love the control he has over the production and representation of his music and all of the details he puts in to it. Out of a sea of artists I really connect with the lyrics. Have been a fan since I discovered Soft Airplane in 2006.

It’s also just really fun to listen to.

If you’re having Father John Misty withdrawals since his last visit to the U.K never fear – his gorgeous new stop-motion video for the track “Things It Would Have Been Helpful to Know Before the Revolution” has just been released.

The Lennon-esque track is taken from the latest album Pure Comedy. He’s also announced that he will be auctioning off the puppets from the video to raise funds for the Environmental Defence Fund.

Bully is definitely not losing these days! Get it? Anyway, they are putting out a new album entitled Losing from the Sub Pop label and this is as in your face as their previous album Feels Like which was highly acclaimed. The difference between their previous album and Losing is going to be refinement and perfectionism. Their first album was gritty, angry and beautifully chaotic stemming from Alicia’s protest on the crap that is life. Losing is coming from a similar place and doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it does polish it and give it new tires and such. Check out the single “Feel The Same” below and enjoy Bully. You can get the album at their Bandcamp site or from Sub Pop’s Mega Mart.

Limited edition Clear w/Black Swirl-colored vinyl LP, available while supplies last.

Today is Sam Beam’s 43rd birthday the songwriting mastermind behind the band Iron and Wine and he’s chosen to celebrate in a rather morbid way. The indie folk artist has released a video for his new single “Thomas County Law” that finds presiding over his own funeral.

The track itself is a gentle ballad with thumping guitar strums and careful string accompaniments evoking Beam’s earlier work. Its J. Austin Wilson-directed video, however, reflects more on the melancholy lyrics like,  “There’s nowhere safe to bury all the time I’ve killed/ Nobody looks away when the sun goes down.” The clip sees Beam as a small town preacher cleaning and prepping his church for a funeral. Only it turns out it’s Beam himself in the casket, as well as on the pulpit and digging the grave.

“Thomas County Law” is the latest single from Iron & Wine’s forthcoming LP, tiltled “Beast Epic” It’s out via Sub Pop Records on August 25th, and Beam will begin touring behind the record the very next day.

‘Beast Epic’ (Release date: August 25th, 2017) All customers who pre-order the LP version of ‘Beast Epic’ from the Sub Pop Mega Mart will receive the album on Loser Edition colored vinyl, while supplies last.

A notorious homebody, Chad VanGaalen is well known for rarely leaving his rickety house in Calgary, endlessly drawing, recording and making art. With Diaper Island, VanGaalen distills his approach, producing his most sonically cohesive album to date, and the closest thing he has done to a rock album.

Also a celebrated visual artist, VanGaalen is widely renowned for his illustration and animation work. As with his previous albums – Infiniheart, Skelliconnection and the Polaris short-listed Soft Airplane, VanGaalen illustrated all of the art for Diaper Island – and is in the midst of animating a music video as well. He has animated music videos for folks like J Mascis, Guster, and Holy Fuck, and his videos have been collectively viewed well over a million times on YouTube.

VanGaalen has been quietly building a catalogue of songs that invite listeners to gently explore his distinctive creativity. Diaper Island extends the adventure into deeper territory, tapping into VanGaalen’s lifeblood and mining the richness of his mind with sharper tools.

Last month we heard news that Chad Vangaalen was about to release his highly anticipated new album and a small tour of europe, Now the album is finally coming in September. We’ve since heard one single from the album called “Old Heads”, today Chad has another beauty for us to enjoy. This one is entitled “Pine and Clover” and features a somewhat creepy, yet still cool animated video of Chad’s always unique and distinct drawings. The song itself is of course full of subtle power and beauty typical of what we’ve come to expect over the years.
