Whirr is an American band from San Francisco, California, United States. They formed in 2010, originally as Whirl. The name was created by the original drummer, Sergio Miranda, in the midst of recording the band’s first demos as a nameless project. It was a homage to all the bands of “the Scene That Celebrates Itself” (Lush, Ride, Moose, Medicine, Lilys, etc.). They had to legally change the name after a woman performing acoustic covers of Black Sabbath songs trademarked “Whirl” and threatened a lawsuit.

Whirr’s sound is often compared to My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. Founding guitarist Nick Bassett also played in the band Deafheaven surrounding and including the release of their 2011 album, “Roads to Judah“.

After a self-released demo cassette and the “Distressor” EP, the band signed to Tee Pee Records in 2011. The original vocalist Byanca Munoz left the band because of creative differences, and was soon replaced by Alexandra Morte (Night School, camera shy). They released the June single that year, followed by their 2012 debut album “Pipe Dreams“. The band also released two splits in 2012 with Anne and Monster Movie.

In 2013, the original drummer Sergio Miranda left the band and was replaced by Devin Nunes. Former vocalist Alexandra Morte also left the band and was replaced by Kristina Esfandiari (Miserable, King Woman). The band released a live EP entitled “Part Time Punks Sessions on April 20, 2013. It was a performance recorded in 2012 that featured the band’s previous lineup.

Whirr released the “Around EP” on July 9, 2013, featuring the new vocalist along with session drummer Trevor DeSchryver (Lycus, Dispirit, formerly Deafheaven). They toured to support it that August with the band Nothing. Esfandiari was fired from the band prior to the tour, leaving the band without a female vocalist for the first time.

As a result of touring together, members of Nothing and Whirr formed a / side project called Death of Lovers. Nick Bassett then joined Nothing as a bassist, and has been touring with them ever since. He also started an project with former Whirr vocalist Alexandra Morte called Camera Shy.

Whirr released their cover of Nirvana’s Pennyroyal Tea on the tribute compilation In Utero, in Tribute, in Entirety on April 19, 2014.

The second full-length LP entitled Sway was released on September 23, 2014. It’s the first release with Loren Rivera as the sole vocalist for the band.

On October 7th, Graveface Records released a remastered version of their debut album entitled “Pipe Dreams (Redux)“. The reissue is remastered by Jack Shirley and includes new artwork and the originally-intended tracklisting that the band preferred over the 2012 release.

The Family Crest performs “Beneath the Brine” on Audiotree Live, June 30, 2014. I seriously can’t fathom how this band hasn’t gone international yet. This is such a powerful performance. This is true talent. Nobody know what they’re missing. Chills everywhere. Hats off to you guys and keep it up. I want you to be on the radio every day, in every city. Cannot wait for you to hit the UK.

Plenty of singer/songwriters get tired of making music alone, but few if any have responded as thoroughly to that feeling as The Family Crest’s Liam McCormick. Since forming the band with John Steerlin in 2009, he’s expanded the San Francisco group to a six-piece. Then when it was time to record an EP, he invited all his friends to come play on the record. But that still wasn’t enough. He ended up putting an ad on Craig’s List inviting musicians throughout Northern California to contribute, getting 80 people to play on Songs From the Valley Below.

This year the band released its first full-length album, and the number of contributors (or the “Extended Family”) was up to 400. I joked with McCormick that he’s going to need to hit 1,000 next time, and he responded with all seriousness that that was the goal. It all might feel a little gimmicky if the music wasn’t so great. Even with just six people on stage, The Family Crest’s sweeping orchestral pop can hardly be contained by the small clubs the band is playing. It feels like bigger venues are just around the bend.

Taken from the album “Come Down Safari” by White Manna (Captcha Records) For those looking for vinyl that looks AND sounds amazing then this offering from San Fran’s White Manna certainly ticks both boxes. A stunning picture disc with artwork by the legendary Alan Forbes, “Come Down Safari” finds White Manna veering slightly away from the rockier efforts from previous release, Dune Worship, and their self-titled debut to concentrate on more drawn out, instrumental jams and head-nodders. The slow build up of the first track, Deathless Guru, sets the pace and the album meanders on rather nicely from there.

springsteen winterland

Bruce Springsteen and the E.Street Band’s legendary live performance from Bill Graham’s Winterland in San Francisco 0n 15th December 1978 recorded by KSAN-FM radio during the tour to promote the album “Darkness On the Edge Of Town” a 3cd set this was recorde on the first night of two show and without doubt one of the greatest rock shows ever and this particual show was one of the bootleged shows that made Springsteen’s name as the great live performer he undoubtedly is, Available from Amazon now

On both nights I can remember as Bruce and the band went into their mutli-song encore that the crowd began stomping to the music and the entire floor, which was an old hardwood floor, began to shake with the rhythm. I was a bit concerned as to whether the old building would collapse and we would all end up in a pile in the basement.

After both shows there was just a lingering feeling of energy for all of us as we made our way out into the foggy damp San Francisco night. Our ears were still ringing from the sounds and being so close to the stage and there were lingering memories of each song. As we walked back to where ever we had parked the car I can remember each of us occasionally bursting out with a line from Thunder Road or Born to Run. The next day we had to get to the airport and catch a flight home for the holiday. We both felt so exhausted from those 2 shows at Winterland.
