King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard -Murder Of The Universe

Showing no signs of slowing down, Geelong’s King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard release Murder Of The Universe, the second of their five albums set for release in 2017. Broken down into 3 distinct ‘chapters’, the track listing of the sprawling 21-track album, which is concerned with the downfall of man and the death of the planet. The album was recorded at Flightless HQ in East Brunswick, Melbourne Australia in early 2017 and produced by the band’s Stu Mackenzie. Lit by thunderclaps and lightning, Murder Of The Universe inhabits a sonic landscape of death, decay, ossification, fossilisation, rebirth. It is a place occupied by wandering shape-shifting beasts, bleeding skies, pools of blood, great fires and mushroom clouds; a planet rent asunder by conflict. A disorientating experience, the album hinges on three distinct sections that rise from larval beds, and whose lyrics should be carved in stone, squeezed from moss, discovered in ancient runes. And all the while a passing cast of characters imbue the tale with both human and non-human emotions. Snippets of earlier recordings breakthrough collection I’m In Your Mind Fuzz and Nonagon Infinity resurface throughout like ghostly shadow form to haunt their latest sound. In years to come King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard will be judged not by their separate albums, but by a body of work where themes, melodies, motifs, riffs and ideas resurface and recur, each album peeling back a layer of the onion to glimpse at past and future alike.

Big Thief  – Capacity

The trails that Brooklyn’s Big Thief – Adrianne Lenker (guitar, vocals), Buck Meek (guitar), Max Oleartchik (bass), and James Krivchenia (drums) – take us down on Capacity, the band’s highly anticipated second record out on Saddle Creek Records, are overgrown with the wilderness of pumping souls. After last year’s stunning Masterpiece, Capacity was recorded in a snowy winter nest in upstate New York at Outlier Studio with producer Andrew Sarlo. The album jumps right into lives marked up and nipped in surprisingly swift fashion. They are peopled and unpeopled, spooked and soothed, regenerating back into a state where they can once again be vulnerable. Lenker’s songs introduce us to a gallery of multifacted women and deal with the complicated matters of identity — at once dangerous and curious, though never unbelievable. Lenker shows us the gentle side of being ripped open. Tricked into love, done in and then witnessing the second act of pulling oneself back together to prepare for it to all happen again, but this time to a sturdier soul, one who is going to take the punches better than ever before and deal some jabs and roundhouses of their own.The album is thick with raw, un-doctored beauty: most of the songs on Capacity were played for the first time in the studio and were recorded the same day. “There is a darker darkness and a lighter light on this album,” Lenker explains. “The songs search for a deeper level of self-acceptance, to embrace the world within and without. I think Masterpiece began that process, as a reaction from inside the pain, whereas I feel Capacity examines the pain from the outside.”

The Deslondes  – Hurry Home

The Deslondes are a five-piece band from New Orleans. In the time between the release of their self-titled debut and new sophomore album, Hurry Home, The Deslondes have toured the world and drawn critical acclaim for their studied and inventive take on New Orleans country and R&B. Hurry Home represents a sonic shift from the country-folk of their debut to a sometimes-psychedelic, electrified gospel-soul sound, with a stronger emphasis on organ and electric guitar. The band split up songwriting and lead vocal duties among its five members, continuing its democratic ethos and musical versatility. The sound may continue to draw comparisons to the country-funkiness of The Band, but The Deslondes were equally inspired by the sound of early Sun Records, the punchy rock and roll of VU-era Velvet Underground and the experimental pop of Joe Meek. Perhaps most importantly, Hurry Home is the sound of a band that understands the history of American music, but is deftly finding their own contemporary approach.

Not A lot to say other than click, play, and lose your mind to this 9-minute funk fantasia built on the bones a 19th-century spiritual. Prince sings and plays with a passion that’s shocking even by his own standard, and watching him lead his band and the crowd through this otherworldly workout is a wonder to behold. And, yeah, that’s Sly & The Family Stone/Graham Central Station’s Larry Graham on bass. Play it loud and celebrate the fact that you were alive for Prince’s reign.

http://

Please tell me it’s a hoax. Found this in my iTunes. . . Bugging out in rehearsal with the Mission Express on a Prince song. “Controversy” was one of about 5 records that were on repeat when I had my first love shack with Kara back in the day. . .

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

Friday night at their show at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band opened their show with a tribute to Prince, performing “Purple Rain.”

The Boss wasn’t the only musician to cover Prince since his passing last Thursday. At the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, LCD Soundsystem covered “Controversy,” Ellie Goulding covered “When Doves Cry,” Sufjan Stevens teamed up with Gallant for a cover of “Purple Rain,” and Mavis Staples performed an a cappella version of the song.

R.I.P. Prince
I had to do this video even though the video sources were all pretty bad and I am waiting on at least one proper 4k shoot but I wanted to get this one out. Purple Rain is one of my all time favourite albums. The song played by my favourite artist as a tribute to Prince is very special , Bruce and Prince shared many things. ….Prince and Springsteen have longed been connected, as both artists hit their commercial peaks in the Eighties; Prince’s Purple Rain and Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A. arrived within weeks of each other in the summer of 1984.

That is how musicians say goodbye to one another. Prince always said that he thought Bruce Springsteen was a great band leader and someone that he learned from. Like Bruce, Prince expected his band to be talented enough to remember many many songs and be able to “change it up on a dime”. Both of these men appreciated perfection and we were the benefactors of their creations. Thanks for the music Prince. I hope you enjoy this rough mix. An upgraded mix with at least one additional great camera angle in the mix and proper audio coming later we hope.

No one imagined that it would be the last time Prince would perform, when they saw him during his stop in Atlanta last week, April 14th, 2016, after a 12 year hiatus. Prince’s “Piano and a Microphone” tour was a flawless display of his artistry. Like the show’s title suggests, it was just him, his piano and a purple strobe light beaming down as he played. The backdrop was a screen with illustrations of various images of the artist that dissolved into a collage of his various looks and album covers through the decades.

Prince was a vibrant example of genius who negotiated both God and sex into his music as never seen before. His songs were a blend of prayer and foreplay. He made spirituality and sex coexist – as they should.

Prince was magical.

http://

Fans witnessed this display of freedom when he played his last two shows at 7pm and 10pm at The Fox Theatre, downtown Atlanta. Both were sold out. He poured his heart out in an intimate setting with no band and no backup singers – only his free Black-self donning a natural Afro.

“The setting was intimate and it was an amazing event,” commented Marla Pruitt, a motivational speaker and accountability coach.

“The opportunity to see him live and performing alone was life changing. The image of him sitting at the piano will be forever embedded in my brain,” she said.

That evening, as he played a 90 minute medley of songs from his iconic catalog, he discussed, love, relationships and social issues. He also reminded the crowd that #BlackLivesMatter. Throughout the show he made several references to his pending memoir about his life. Upon hearing the news of his passing, fans expressed disbelief.

“It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died at his Paisley Park residence this morning at the age of 57,” said his publicist Yvette Noel-Schure.

On social media the sentiments poured out across the virtual world.

While fans were told not to snap photos or record videos some were able to capture a few images and shared them online during the show and then again one week later with their expressions of grief.

One of Prince’s final tweets immediately after his Atlanta performance reads: I am #transformed

We too are transformed “your Royal Highness.” So are we!

Live Recap: Prince's Piano & A Microphone Tour, Atlanta's Fox Theatre, 4/14/16

When Prince’s Atlanta date on his Piano & A Microphone Tour—which, just like it sounds, features the singer playing solo at a purple baby grand, the first such tour of his lengthy career—was postponed last week due to a bout with the flu, the rescheduled shows were announced surprisingly quickly. The Purple One hit the stage at the Fox Theatre just a week after he was initially supposed to, and from the look of it, he’d made a full recovery.

Would we really expect any less, though? We all know Prince isn’t fully human—the man hasn’t visibly aged in 30 years, so why should we be surprised that seven days after being ill, he’s reaching mind-blowing high notes on “A Case of U” that artists half his age would struggle to hit? His 7 p.m. set was a short one—just 80 minutes—but that seemed to have more to do with the fact that the venue needed to turn over in time for his 10 p.m. set later that evening than with any sort of lingering flu symptoms. Prince made every second count, and perhaps most importantly, the crowd was grateful for any time at all. He still managed to cram two encores into those 80 minutes, and every time he reappeared onstage, the noise was deafening.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfFXM6I8Sg4

The encores weren’t the only times the singer left the stage—he got up periodically throughout the set, at one point leaving briefly to regroup before returning and explaining that “Sometimes I forget how emotional these songs are.” But every time those fingers hit the keys, there’d be a rapturous moment of recognition from the crowd. The opportunity to hear these songs stripped down on the piano is a rare one, and that wasn’t lost on the fans, some of whom shelled out as much as $1000 a seat to be there.

Prince fed off that energy, too, encouraging hand-claps and sing-alongs on Controversy and bringing the house lights up for “Kiss” to witness the entire theater attempting their best falsettos. His cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes” was moving, resulting in a hushed awe—one of the few quiet moments of the set. Purple Rain fans didn’t get to hear the famous title track—a fact some reminded him when he finished his last encore by joking “I don’t have any more hits left!”—but they were treated to stellar versions of favorites from that record like “I Would Die 4 U,” “Baby I’m a Star” and “The Beautiful Ones.”

And, ultimately, Prince can do and play whatever he wants. He’s Prince, and he’s here blessing us with his presence. Especially for a show that almost wasn’t, every song feels like a gift.

Prince covering Joni Mitchell’s ” A Case of You “ from an obscure tribute album to Joni. I own no copyrights on this, and I offer it in memory of Prince. for such a beautiful song and a superbly executed cover

Prince made his last purchases at iconic Minneapolis record store the Electric Fetus on Saturday.

The artist had stopped in to support Record Store Day, said Bob Fuchs, the store’s retail music manager.

He bought six CDs, according to Fuchs:

1) Stevie Wonder, “Talking Book”
2) Chambers Brothers, “The Time Has Come”
3) Joni Mitchell, “Hejira”
4) Swan Silvertones, “Inspirational Gospel Classics”
5) Missing Persons, “The Best Of Missing Persons”
6) Santana, “Santana IV”

Fuchs said his store sold out of Prince merchandise in two hours after news broke that Prince had died.

“It’s a lot of sadness today. People coming in, sharing stories, and crying, and talking about their experiences and their love of his music,” Fuchs said. “It’s just kind of been a communal day of grieving at the store here. And celebration I suppose. People were dancing around, playing records, kind of a nonstop Prince fair today.”

The last tweet from Prince was a link to the store’s website on Saturday, where he was selling his Piano & A Microphone concert program.

Chris Cornell sat down for an in-depth interview and acoustic performance in the SiriusXM Studios for an Artist Confidential where he performed a cover of Prince’s Nothing Compares 2 U.

There have been plenty of Prince covers throughout history, but perhaps none more memorable perhaps than Sinead O’Connor’s take on “Nothing Compares 2 U” 25 years after that iconic song’s release, someone surprising just gave O’Connor a run for her cover money: Chris Cornell the Soundgarden frontman has been out on the road supporting his latest solo effort, Higher Truth, and he’s apparently been work shopping his own take on “Nothing Compares 2 U” at some gigs. It appears any kinks have been worked out, as he turned in a pretty stunning rendition of the song for SiriusXM’s Artist Confidential series. Backed by a cellist and a second acoustic guitarist, Cornell delivers some chill-inducing vocals on the take. Sure, it might not seem like Prince + Sinead O’Connor  Quality Chris Cornell, but this really happened, and it’s really damned good.

Prince will take the stage at Baltimore’s Royal Farms Arena for Rally 4 Peace, a concert honoring Freddie Gray, the Baltimore man who was allegedly killed while in police custody. In anticipation, Prince has debuted a new song.

Aptly entitled “Baltimore”, the song “addresses the unrest in Baltimore and the socio/political issues around the country in the wake of a slew of killings of young black men.” It’s dedicated to “all of the people of the city of Baltimore.”

The song’s accompanying SoundCloud description adds, “Please know that all involved in this project never take for granted the privileges we have in this country. Let’s all continue to fight the good fight and confront inhumanity on every level until the day it is no longer.”
