Bluffing’s debut album, Sugar Coated Pills of Wisdom, is an 18-minute audio sugar rush. Bluffing don’t waste any time in not wasting any of your time and pummel you continuously with their super-charged bursts of sweet, sour, silly, and slinky fuzz-pop with a punk slant. Drummer/vocalist JBoxer brings in familiar sounds from past bands Le Rug and Butter the Children but– with the help of Olivia Drusin on guitar and vocals– cuts, edits, and mangles them into a collage of new noise that ear worms its way to your sweet spot every single time.

Hoodwink’d is New York foursome LVL UP’s sophomore album where they wipe the lo-fi guitar grit from past songs and bring the vocals up front and center. LVL UP’s astute pop sensibilities remain their backbone as fuzz-fused riffs and arching notes create a moody atmosphere around Benton’s deadpan vocals.
It’s a record that addresses our enormous capability for self-deception. Hoodwink’d is concerned with the idea that we’re our own worst enemy, that we let emotions cloud our better judgement and hold us back from living up to our full potential. Whether it’s triggered by low self-esteem or anxiety or a perpetual fear of failure, it’s all the same — we lie to ourselves, and that’s the most dangerous thing we can do.

Between constant self-referencing and its mostly abstract lyrics, Hoodwink’d clearly offers a lot to think about. And yet, at the same time, it doesn’t require much thinking. Ultimately, that’s the genius of this album: it’s simultaneously a totally accessible pop record—full of catchy hooks and ripping solos—and a depressing series of existential crises. The combination of the two is an album that’s both a wonderful contradiction and a must-listen.

Ex-Cops and the Official music video for ‘White Noise’ by Ex Cops. From the new album “Daggers”, available now from Downtown Records:B orrowing from the wispy sounds of vintage Sarah Records and Flying Nun artists, Brooklyn, New York’s Ex Cops is the project of Brian Harding (ex-Hymns) and and Amalie Bruun (ex-Minks).
Formed in 2011 the duo self-released a short-run, homespun CD-EP of hazy, lo-fi recordings featuring Harding’s opaque bedroom-pop songwriting juxtaposed with the duo’s sun-kissed harmonies. Their John Siket-produced (Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth) debut, True Hallucinations, due out January 22 via Other Music Recording Co.

2014 might go down as the year of female-driven pop music. And in this segment log-jammed with talent, New York’s VÉRITÉ managed to stand out above the pack. Earlier this year, she released debut EP, “Echo”!, to wide acclaim and to put a bow on what was a breakout year her,

From the dvd “Chronology” a rare live presentation in New York on 1976. Taken from the album “More Songs About Buildings and Food” is the second studio album by the American indie rock band Talking Heads, released in July 1978 and the first of a string of three co-produced by Brian Eno. The album was significantly more popular than their first, Talking Heads: 77. The band’s blend of funky basslines, and mixtures of influences, along with David Byrne‘s unique voice, established the group as a critical success known for their live shows, but still to start with disappointing album sales.

Live at WBAI studio, New York May 28th, 1975. With Ivan Kral, Lenny Kaye and Richard Sohl, the original line up of the Patti Smith Group they helped make this a truly historic night. This recording is perfect! Everything you wanna hear and everything that’s missing in music today, is captured on this disc. The spontaneity, improv and language packaged all together with the sound…it is utter perfection! This may not be hardcore, metal, or punk by the masses definition, but for me it doesn’t get any more honest than Patti Smith. Another excellent live album now available on Amazon.

After a year spent perfecting his cave painting skills in the sewers of New York, Lord Fascinator has dropped his latest self-directed visual masterpiece to the loungy psychedelic tune of ‘Showin’ Off’.
Airing first on NYC-centric music blog Brooklynvegan who said the video’s ‘Lush strings, flutes, majorly groovy bass and chill vibe, it’s a great preview of things to come. We’ve got the premiere of its food-centric video, directed by Johnny Mackay. Not since the cover art to Whipped Cream and Other Delights has frosting and sushi and spaghetti been used with music so provocatively’. The video was also Rage Indie Clip of the Week here in Australia on release.

To celebrate Fascinator joining the Spinning Top Recordsfamily,The original single version of ‘Showin’ Off’ the track will be available on iTunes from December 15th.

When The Walkmen announced their “extreme hiatus” at the back end of last year, we began to worry we might loose the talented New Yorkers forever. Luckily in 2014 they showed that whilst the band might not be going strong, the musicians within are still relentlessly creative and stunningly talented.Of course the man with the most pressure on his shoulders was frontman Hamilton Leithauser. As the spokesman for the band he carried with him into his solo career a sense of expectation, and on “Black Hours” he did not disappoint. He pulled off the tough balancing act of remaining loyal to his established fan base and taking his music into new directions with aplomb! Fans of The Walkmen need look no further than I Don’t Know or closing track The Smallest Splinter.

Those of us who wanted to see what makes him stand out as a solo artist though, were arguably treated even better. Gorgeous crooned-piano ballads, like 5AM & St Mary’s Country were equal parts Frank Sinatra and Tom Waits. Dylanish-country stompers like I Retired and the frankly bonkers run-away mine train feel of lead single Alexander. It was an album that had so much to give already, and yet hinted that even better might be to come. The Walkmen are dead long live The Walkmen!

As members of New York band The Men, Mark Perro and Nick Chiericozzi make loud, rootsy punk. The debut album from their Dream Police side project explores psych-rock and makes for a heady departure. Whatever this is some great guitars.
