Toronto indie-punk trio Tough Age have shared their new album “Which Way Am I?” ,via Mint Records, following singles “My Life’s a Joke & I’m Throwing it Away,” and “Repose.” Which Way Am I? is the follow-up to 2017’s Shame. Taking cues from Flying Nun indie-pop and speedy ’80s punk, “My Life’s a Joke & I’m Throwing it Away” is the sound of melancholy whiplash. It’s part happy-go-lucky breeziness and part painful self-destruction, and either way, it’ll get you all riled up.

Like most of their crate-digging contemporaries, the new record explores all kinds of new directions, experimenting in different areas of post-punk while implicitly nodding to the pocket-sized punk of Dirtnap Records .

The first single the group is called “Repose,” and while it is one of the record’s sleepier cuts, it’s by no means tame. Clark takes on vocals for this song—as she does with many of tracks—before the five-minute track gives way to a sprawling John Dwyer–like guitar odyssey. “‘Repose’ is me trying to write a song about peaceful things after all of my misery songs on the previous record and 7″,” she shares. “I had mixed success in achieving my goal. I always write the melody first and then I decide what I want the song to be about, and then I write the words (sometimes words slip in during the melody part and then I have to write around them). To me, ‘Repose’ sounded like a calm and solitary night, so everything in that song happens at night.”

“I wrote the music for ‘Repose’ one morning when I should have already left for work,” Samson adds. “It came very quickly (but not quickly enough to avoid being late), but didn’t feel like something I could write a melody for. We practiced the song without Penny singing, so the first time we heard her vocals were live in the studio as she recorded them, and Jesse and I both were stunned. It felt like a real left turn for Penny, and I think shows the depths of talent she sort of just tucks away and dishes out when she feels you’ve earned a piece of it.”

For all of their fire, fury, and revolutionary antagonism, the Edmonton-based experimental rock band have never quite seemed of this world. The band’s founder and leader Cassia Hardy has an ear for the unnatural and a habit of slipping into alluring pop melodies without warning, often moments before tumbling down into chaos. And coupled with a desire to play a lot of things really fucking loud, Hardy often makes Wares‘ songs feel transcendent. Hardy’s lyrics deal with trauma and disaster, but Wares‘ music either confronts them with wrecking ball of guitar noise, or offsets them with a piercing fragility. “It’s places like this that take me away from the mess that I’m in,” she sang on “Dirt” from the band’s self-titled 2017 debut, articulating something that Wares usually leave unsaid.

Edmonton outfit Wares is the project of singer/songwriter and guitarist Cassia Hardy, and today, the band has shared their first release for Mint Records, Survival. It’s an emotionally uplifting record characterized by inner turmoil and guitars that range from furiously sweltering to pleasantly warm. “This record is dedicated to decolonial activists, anti-fascist agitators, prairie queers fighting for community and a better life,” Hardy writes in the liner notes. Their latest album Survival released earlier this year. It’s a deeply personal album with fervent, textured guitars and dynamic song arcs. Survival is anything but stereotypical: “Living Proof” channels melodramatic electro-goth, “Hands, Skin” takes cues from emo-punk and “Surrender into Waiting Arms” boils to a metal guitar finale.

Wares is a musical project engineered by Edmonton. From teeth rattling electric convulsions to barely-there, reverb drenched refrains, the musical inflections explored by Wares are as varied as they are enthralling.

Ask a dozen people to define the term “indie rock” and you’ll probably get a dozen different answers that include word combinations like “Archers of Loaf” and “Foster the People” and “indie rock is dead” . As the term has evolved over the past few decades—from its origins denoting music released by an independent record label to a vague descriptor of a certain kind of sound—it’s no wonder the words have lost much of their meaning. Make no mistake, however: Kiwi Jr. is an indie rock band. You can hear evidence of that all over their fine debut album “Football Money”, which has been released worldwide by Mint Records. (It came out only in Canada last year.) Someday, other band names will disappear from Kiwi Jr.’s reviews as the quartet further develops its sound.

Football Money is evidence they’ve clearly got the ability and the point of view to do exactly that. Until then, they’re working from a world-class playbook.

Vancouver’s Dumb make whimsical slack rock that’s anything but. The band’s cool, campy outlook is both anxious and chill, enveloped in jittery rhythms and bright, fervent riffs. When Dumb settle down a bit, like on the driving “Mint,” they are no less biting. The sprightly single has dual meaning, playfully referencing both money and the Dumb’s new label, Mint Records. “The song ‘Barnyard’ is about a character who is walking along a highway towards an event that they don’t want to attend, becoming delusional in the process. We also wanted to make this a danceable song”

From walking around town to putting your foot through a wall, this new track from Halifax’s Monomyth is told from a minimalist’s point of view, with each verse building on the common factor of “looking for a place to go.” It feels to me like watching food-coloured milk being hit with dish soap (don’t lie, you’ve done this before): a beautiful mess of opposites, constantly swaying, waving and tumbling between intentionally harmonious guitar riffs. Unconventional, yet completely satisfying build-ups lead from one scene to the next. Monomyth gives you something to think about with every song the band writes, and with “Re:Lease Life (Place 2 Go),” it gives you a reason to sit down, and truly enjoy four minutes and 48 seconds. Look out for Monomyth’s new album, Happy Pop Family, out via Mint Records .

Monomyth swap out their rhythm section, keep the psychedelic pop hooks and come up sporting their best paisley. The songwriting duo of Seamus Dalton and Josh Saltzer continue to split the vocal duties and their admiration of local heroes like Sloan, Superfriendz and Thrush Hermit while adding from Teenage Fanclub  harmonies and the erudite pop sensibilities of the Weather Prophets and The Go Betweens. “Happy Pop Family” is a wonderful tour de force and among one of the best pure pop records of the year. The cool and beautiful Palpitations features a pristine melody interrupted by grungy heart attack chords. “Aloha” with its airy Teenage Fanclub harmony that kicks off the record isn’t even the best song here. That honor goes to the infinitely catchy “Re:lease life (Place 2 Go)” which plays like a travel log and has an off the cuff feel to it that reminds me of the Go-Betweens’ .
