Rory Gallagher – Chorus TV Show, Theatre de L’Empire, Paris, 21st March 1980,

Today we are remembering Rory Gallagher. That is the way we are told we should start a piece about him on the anniversary of his death. It was 20 years ago today that Rory passed away. But it would be incorrect for us to say ‘today’.

We remember him every day. Rory has a huge fan base but never quite achieved the main stream fame that his contemporaries ( Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page etc) did. It sure wasn’t because of a lack of talent. He was known for his charismatic performances and dedication to his craft. Gallagher’s albums have sold in excess of 30 million copies worldwide.

Rory was only 47 years old when he passed.

If he could come back for just one more song, what song would you want him to play?

RIP Rory. Thanks for the music.

In the dark, all the colors melt together. In daylight, they are a divine radiance.

Venera 4 is a french multifaceted quartet. Their universe combines several sounds between female voices and shrill guitars; sensuality and strenght. Two boys, two girls, meeting in noisy pop songs with a delicate sense of colors… and darkness

‘ Inspired by Ride, The Telescopes and Swervedriver, it’s fitting that Ride‘s Mark Gardener jumped on board to produce the record. For fans of The Black Angels, Sleepy Sun and Brian Jonestown Massacre

This weekend sees the debut LP from Héloïse Letissier, the performer also known as Christine and the Queens, who is already behind a series of critically acclaimed hits, accompanied by some startling videos. Her rapid ascent to national prominence led to admiring profiles in French newspapers Le Monde and Libération but although her reflective songs and audacious creative philosophy sound about as French as it is possible to imagine, the original inspiration for Letissier’s act came from England.

Christine and the Queens

After an unproductive period at drama school, Letissier came to London “in exile” in 2010 and befriended a trio of transgender “singing drag queens” in a London club. “They convinced me to attempt singing. They were my Queens,”  Although she performs alone, as her alter ego of Christine, she sees herself as representing a force ranged against the cliche of the pretty pop stars. Her act, as seen in her video for the song Saint Claude, is polished and restrained – and determinedly asexual. She wears a trouser suit and expresses herself, like Michael Jackson

Born near Nantes in 1988, Letissier’s father was a professor of English literature and her mother taught French and Latin. She played the piano from an early age and remembers an obsession with performance. Classical dance training that began when she was five ended early with a painful foot injury and modern jazz took over for a while.

Her stage persona is in the playful tradition of English singer Jane Birkin during her period singing Serge Gainsbourg hits in the 1960s, but her style is more confrontational and less naive.

The French singer, dancer, performance artist and composer, who is 26 this year, lives alone in the brash 19th arrondisement of Paris, near Pigalle, with her two cats and finds it hard to keep friends. She is often melancholy and says she is obsessed with death:

Mermonte are an eleven piece ‘orchestral pop band’ from France, they released “Audiorama” back in May and honestly, it’s a complete delight. A whirlwind of different influences colliding, an intelligent blend of conflicting styles that somehow work together,  it’s never tiring in its urgency. Mermonte are effortlessly breathing life into guitar pop music, a genre that was beginning to feel lost and pointless, until albums like this one remind you what all its all about.

Here’s the video for “Crystallized” from Parisian Melody Prochet’s eponymous debut album, released late last year.Recorded with Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker in Perth in the Summer of 2012, “Crystallized” but one of the numerous highlights, a frenetic, scorched pop song that vividly demonstrates Prochet’s talent for blurring the lines between her classically trained ear and penchant for experimental sonics.

The track has a very mellifluous syncopation to it, built from many repetitious looped sounds, so in the film I wanted to visually connect these sounds to simple actions exploring the imminent demise of love. By that I mean the beauty of the beginning and the end and the recursive behaviour that those feelings inspire in between.”

From the Dead Horse One album “WITHOUT LOVE WE PERISH” Produced by Ride’s Mark Gardener, I previewed Dead Horse One‘s debut album ‘Without Love We Perish’ which came out last April via A Quick One Records. The French quintet formed in 2011 and released their first EP Heavenly Choir Of Jet Engines the following year. Inspired by Ride, The Telescopes and Swervedriver, it’s fitting that Ride‘s Mark Gardener jumped on board to produce the record. Lead single ‘I Love My Man’ is an example of the rock n’ roll swagger you should expect. It’s predominantly a psych rock experience, combined with loveable slacker rock balladry. I had a chance to preview early cuts of the album many months ago, it’s clear that a lot of work has gone into putting this record together and it’s paid off. For fans of The Black Angels, Sleepy Sun and Brian Jonestown Massacre.
