Bear’s Den perform ‘Elysium’ for The Crypt Sessions

London based trio, Bear’s Den joined us recently for a hauntingly powerful performance of their single, Elysium. It’s an elegiac paean to the redemptive power of friendship and the song that marked the point Bear’s Den, for many, went from best kept secret to new favourite band.
Bear’s Den are, Andrew Davie (guitar, vocals), Joey Haynes (guitar) and Kev Jones (drums, bass). Inspired by Maurice Sendak’s 1963 children’s classic ‘Where the Wild Things Are’, Bear’s Den create music which -whisper it- dares to be both literate and profound while, crucially, remaining universally accessible. Since forming in 2012, the trio have built a fervent fanbase through their live shows and a dedicated DIY aesthetic that originally saw them self-fund tours and sell hand printed CDs direct to fans at gigs. 2014 has been quite the year for them; having played alongside the likes of Mumford and Sons and Daughter and not to mention sold out shows aplenty in their own right across the U.K. and U.S. Their critically acclaimed debut album, “Islands” was released earlier this year and recorded with long-term producer Ian Grimble at Church Studios. It’s lyrically both restrained yet richly descriptive, the product of Davie’s novelistic approach to songwriting.
‘Elysium’ is taken from the debut album, ‘Islands’ which is out now on Communion Records.And the band will be touring the UK and Europe early next year, culminating in a massive headline show at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire on 3rd March. Listings for the full tour as well as tickets as all up on the band’s official site here: http://www.bearsdenmusic.co.uk/live/

Brooklyn folk-rockers the Lone Bellow worked with Aaron Dessner on their upcoming album “Then Came The Morning”, and some of the National’s dark elegance is present in “Fake Roses,” the second single they’ve shared from the project. The tune’s warm tones and steady pulse also hearken to Arcade Fire’s somber Funeral ballad “Une Année Sans Lumière” or Wilco’s “Via Chicago,” and there’s a weathered grace to the vocal, the sighing pedal steel and moody twilight atmospherics, the Lone Bellow have made a fantastic leap here, distancing themselves from a post Mumford hordes and proving that a class of stately indie rock is still capable of sounding fresh and vital.

Greylag are a folk Rock band that sounds like they were a metal band at one time. In my twisted world, Greylag were a rocking metal band from Portland that were coerced into doing an unplugged show for some local Wilamette charity. Upon the completion, they decided to give this folk thing a go full time. Being that Greylag claim everything from Zeppelin to Elliot Smith to xxx, there were surely lines to be blurred.

Greylag, named after a wild goose, is comprised of Andrew Stonestreet (lead vocal, acoustic guitar), Daniel Dixon (lead guitar & other stringed things, keyboards) and Brady Swan (drums). For their full-length debut, they employed Phil Ek at the knobs. Ek best known for his work with other NW acts such as Built To Spill, Fleet Foxes and Band of Horses to name a few heard something he liked when
“Yours To Shake” and “Arms Unknown”, the second and third tracks on the album bring out my inner Butt-Head. Watch the video for Yours To Shake below and tell me you’re screaming Rock!!! Rock!!! about a minute in. The tune about a fiery relationship builds slowly before kicking in, with some Zeppelin-esque guitars. The lyrics throughout, as well as the album cover, give off this 70s feel when Zeppelin ruled the world.

Wooden Wand is the stage name of singer-songwriter James Jackson Toth, who has recorded under his given name as well as the name WAND. The style of music recorded by Toth and his many incarnations has drawn on a variety of experimental folk and rock influences, Though he was significant player in the New Weird America trend  along with Devendra Banhart, Akron/Family, Joanna Newsom, and collaborators The Vanishing Voice, Toth has been difficult to pigeonhole in one genre;

Wooden Wand’s collaborations have been nearly as wandering and nomadic as Toth himself, a New York native who attended Purchase College before relocating to Knoxville, Tennessee, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and most recently Lexington, Kentucky.
