Shoe-gaze/ psych rockers Flyying Colours are getting set to jet off to the UK and Europe this May to tour in support of the forthcoming EP “ROYGBIV”. While there the band will be performing as part of Great Escape and Primavera Sound Festivals, and supporting their Russian label mates Pinkshinyultrablast, as well as doing their own headline launch shows across Europe.

For those uninitiated, the Melbourne four piece have received their fair share of acclaim in the past few months, including respected UK music loggers and magazines the band’s new single ‘Running Late’ a “gorgeous piece of music”.  The single was the first taste from their EP titled ROYGBIV, which will have a worldwide release with the band recently signing to Club ac30 in the UK/Europe, Shelflife in the US and Vinyl Junkie in Japan.

I find Australian shoegaze quartet Flyying Colours’ name a bit maddening the spelling makes it hard to find the band on the net , but their music would be more than enough to soothe any irritation, a heady balm of smeared guitar textures and sharp pop sensibilities. After the minor classic  Not Today,” “Running Late” is the second single from their upcoming ROYGBIV EP. Brodie Brümmer and Gemma O’Connor’s dreamily deadpan male/female vocals melt together perfectly like some sort of musical Voltron before separating in the chorus, where O’Connor’s breathy coos swirl into an angelic echo overhead. At three and a half minutes, “Running Late” is fairly trim for a song about being fundamentally incompatible with the inexorable forward march of time, but those three and a half minutes proceed at their own leisurely pace. Flyying Colours are taking the time to stop and smell the flowers — or the effects pedals? — and you should probably take the time to stop and listen the band are about to tour the UK.

Shelflife Records presents the release of the Melbourne shoegaze/psych outfit Flyying Colours this track “Not Today” remix taken from the self-titled 5-track EP
True to their name, Flyying Colours unashamedly display their influences in this debut: tone bending MBV/Swervedriver guitars, Ride’s bass hooks and the familiar soft hush of early 90s male/female vocals. Add to that their own edgy, refreshing pop-mindedness and it makes for five completely brilliant tracks.

The EP includes pile-driving single “Wavygravy”, a layered noise anthem jumped on by national radio and the international shoegaze blogosphere on its Oz release last April. Other stand out tracks are psych-rock opener “Like You Said”, “Feathers” with its chorus-y jangle and lush vocals and the cool-down of closing track “Bugs.”

Formed in 2011, Flyying Colours is Brodie J Brümmer (vox/Guitar), Gemma O’Connor (vox/Guitar) and the drums & bass of brothers Sam and Joshua Dawes. Before “Wavygravy” they received a lot of attention for their explosive live shows, setting them well apart from others occupying Melbourne’s growing 90s/shoegaze scene. Flyying Colours have just completed an Australian tour and are currently recording tracks for their debut album.
