Hater - Siesta

Hater have a new album ‘Siesta’ due out 28th September and another New single ‘Fall Off’ . Sweden’s Hater know how to sprinkle in the right amount of melancholy. The indie quartet wowed us last year with their debut LP, You Tried. It was a triumph of fuzzed out dream-pop, it earned them a spot on our Best New Bands of 2017 list. While Hater’s songs are typically filled with infectious riffs and easy-going melodies, Caroline Landahl’s bittersweet vocal delivery always keeps things rough around the edges. There’s pain between the soft glow of warm guitar tones and rosy harmonies.

Thet are one of the best, most underappreciated bands “Fall Off” finds Hater at their most softly devastating, wistful and full of hope, and it’s one of our favorite tracks from the group’s beautiful new LP Siesta” .

I heard their earlier hazy single “It’s So Easy,” which is less gloomy, thanks to some sparkly synth work and crisp production. Even so, Hater maintain their laid-back sound with bright, jangly hooks and characteristically excellent guitar work that reminds me ’80s jangle pop bands like the Feelies or even the college rock sound of early R.E.M. records. Via email, the band explained, “Sometimes one can feel that everything’s fine without really being in touch with your own feelings. It’s so easy is about seeing a close friend ignoring such things.”

“It’s So Easy” is one or two new singles we’re hearing from Hater’s upcoming album, Siesta. Like the title would suggest, the song is nothing short of easy listening, the perfect complement to a summer drive at golden hour — or, nodding to the album title, an afternoon nap after spending your morning at the beach.

The other new track, “I Wish I Gave You More Time Because I Love You,” serves as the B-side and also directly follows “It’s So Easy” it on the Siesta tracklist. The band calls it “a beautiful song which includes a magnificent saxophone played by Inge Petersson Lindbäck.” They add, “It’s about the strong bonds you can have with a family member, being together, but still not. Also there’s some congas in there somewhere.

“In this landscape we are fading/ Shiny particles and shadings/ Once continuous and clear/Through the skies.” Jane Weaver is the architect of a world of wavy soundscapes where listeners lose themselves in a mix of intrepid experimentalism and anthemic floor-fillers.

And when we say ‘architect’, we really mean it. Weaver is self-taught, self-produces and even owns the record label Bird – her completely autonomous artistic process resulting in a wholly inimitable sound.

Another favourite of our omniscient friends over at BBC6 Music, the Liverpudlian’s latest album Modern Kosmology leads us to the claim that she could well be the queen of psychedelia.

The phenomenon that is Jane Weaver leads the charge, alongside Joan as Police Woman, of an emboldened Deer Shed Festival Lodge Stage line-up for 2018, as Saturday night headliner.

Last year Swedish indie rock outfit Hater released not only their great debut album “You Tried” (which was among my best albums of the year list) but also the EP with Red Blinders.

The band recently stopped into the Danish studio Tapetown to record a “Live At Tapetown” session, giving us a heavenly version of Red Blinders track “Blushing.” Fans of Alvvays should look no further, these guys will be  among your new favorite bands. Hater performed the set in Aarhus a few weeks back for a headlining set in TAPE.  They were positively grinning from ear to ear  when Hater was up for doing a Live At Tapetown session .  If you were one of the lucky few who happened to be there, you got a great lil’ show. It might have been the first time they’d performed in Aarhus . The rest of the indie-savvy scene is catching on to them. This might help if you’re new to the ball.

2LP plus 24 page book + DL Card. Emerging after The Lemonheads disbanded Evan Dando returned to music first with a solo tour and ‘Live At The Brattle Theatre’ then came his debut solo album ‘Baby I’m Bored’. During his hiatus he sobered up, got married and went straight. Taking four years to produce, his live shows funded the album’s recording sessions. Mature and autobiographical, ‘Baby I’m Bored’ is a stellar record that stripped Dando of his grunge label.

At the time of recording, he was without the band which saw him lean more towards an achingly melodic alt-country rock sound. Self-deprecating, these are songs of decline and coming back from that. The record includes “Hard Drive” and “All My Life” two tracks penned by Ben Lee and features contributions from producer/composer Jon Brion, producer Bryce Goggin, Tom Morgan, Giant Sand’s Howe Gelb, Calexico’s John Convertino and Joey Burns, ex-Spacehog frontman Royston Langdon, Come’s Chris Brokaw and Arthur Johnson.

This limited edition special Record Store Day 2LP ‘bookback’ reissue includes a disc of unheard unreleased tracks, singles, b-sides and rarities. “Dando has a flair for bruised melancholy that stands comparison with Gram Parsons and Alex Chilton.” Q Magazine / “A beautiful album of tender reflections on life, love and drug-induced folly set in soulful, countrytinged guitar pop.” The Independent

You can imagine John Peel’s hurriedly inaccurate summation of a cold and unforgiving Swedish winter as he juxtaposes the big-jumper-like welcoming warmth of Hater. Their lush and tempered guitars are an almost Marr-approved Smiths-like foil for Caroline Landahl’s beautifully accented and accentuated vocal – it’s a heartwarming brew.

“We know little of their home town, Malmo,” Peel might have mused, caught up in Hater’s minor chord world weariness, “ Indeed. Hater are new to the game. This year’s well-received debut album, ‘You Tried’ earned comparisons to Alvvays, The Pretenders and even Jefferson Airplane, eclectic for sure, but that’s just incidental.

Their new EP distinguishes their very own super polished and intricate guitar-led dreamy pop. Featuring their first single for Fire Records, the wonderfully forlorn and truly lovesick ‘Blushing’ (we’ve all been there) and ‘Rest’ with its haunting monosyllabic guitar break, a super-clean chiming motif that seems like a closing salvo before it regains momentum and brings proceedings to a suitable climax, welcoming back Landahl for one last chorus.

The echoey eeriness of ‘Red Blinders’ could have come right out of the bubble blowing indie pop hey days of the early ‘80s, while ‘Penthouse’ is a chunkier c86 groove with a wind blowing through its motorik rhythm.

Hater release their new EP ‘Red Blinders’ on December 1st on Fire Records.

“Their ability to effortlessly write songs that are devastating in their lyrical impact yet bewitching to hear is only rivaled by a few.” Revue

“Their unique take on rock music feels familiar and lived-in, taking bits from indie-pop, post-punk, and classic rock.” Stereogum

“Gorgeous, achingly bittersweet vocals, perpetually swaying between comforting and devastating.” Gorilla Vs Bear

For their third album, the recently released Friends & Lovers, Argentina’s Las Kellies are down one Kelly (former bassist Betty), but Silvina Costa (drums) and Cecilia Kelly (guitar) continue to rock on with their own special brand of garage and psychedelic rock with a bit of dubby new wave, along with new bassist Manuela Ducatenzeiler.  There is less of the latter on this album, but Las Kellies‘ proficiency and growing confidence make for a satisfying listen in the garage/psychedelic rock groove as well.

The band doesn’t move to a new plane with this album, but they already were very good, so that would have been a high bar.  Long time fans will be pleased, and prospective fans should find a lot to like.  If Las Kellies have a special sauce, it is that they understand that the kids want to dance. And the band wants the kids that want to dance to be able to dance.  As an example, check out “I’m On Fire”

Produced by Iván Diaz Mathé (Lee “Scratch” Perry & Mad Professor), who’s worked on previous records, the sun-soaked psych-pop tune ‘Summer Breeze’ slowly grooves with honeyed tones, shimmering guitars and propulsive percussion.

Las Kellies inflected new wave post-punk blends garage-psych with infectiously deft dance beats and melodic pop. ‘Friends & Lovers’ fuzzed-up gems sees them move away from the heavier dub sounds of the last record instead sinking their teeth into a groove like Thee Oh Sees with the spirit of ESG and Delta 5 yet markedly different.

‘Summer Breeze’ is taken from Las Kellies new album ‘Friends & Lovers’ out 14th October on Fire Records

Following the release of ‘Total Exposure’ the fiery Argentinian grrl group Las Kellies return with new album ‘Friends & Lovers’ set for release in late October 2016.

No one does infectious garage-pop as well as Argentinian trio Las Kellies.

New single Celebrate Life is also the perfect case in point – an irresistible combination of buzzsaw garage rhythms and doo-wop pop harmonies.

Totally Mild are a Melbourne-based band, fronted by powerhouse woman Elizabeth Mitchell, who has an impressive falsetto range to compliment their “disjointed pop” style. Originally starting off as Mitchell’s solo project, the band soon expanded to a four-piece and have taken Australia by storm receiving multiple music award nominations for their debut album. Last year they supported Best Coast (another amazing female-fronted band) in their Australian tour and finished off the year by performing at Meredith Music Festival.

Close Lobsters, Firestation Towers 1986-1989  Cherry Red’s expanded C86 set was one of the highlights of 2014. Fire Records intensified the indie pop microscope this year with a harnessing of this presently existing Scottish outfit’s Foxheads Stalk This Land and Headache Rhetoric LPs and the singles collection Forever Until Victory!

Some of the Lobsters’ cohorts frankly lost the thread as they searched for or attempted to maintain fleeting success, but that’s not the case here, Firestation Towers maintaining the focus on chiming guitars, non-hackneyed melodicism, and energetic delivery and lacking any sense of anticlimax. Sure, the early singles might jangle forth with a little extra urgency, but that’s far from an uncommon occurrence.

Taken from  , the 3 x LP set including Foxheads Stalk This Land and Headache Rhetoric with Forever Until Victory! The Singles collection available on vinyl for the first time this Record Store Day 2015

Close Lobsters first came to wider prominence with the track “Firestation Towers” on the NME‘s C86 compilation. They signed to Fire Records and released their debut single “Going To Heaven To See If It Rains” in October 1986. They released a second single “Never Seen Before” in April 1987 which strengthened their reputation as one of the leading emerging indie bands. They went on to release two albums: Foxheads Stalk This Land was released in 1987 and Headache Rhetoric in 1989. The review of “Foxheads Stalk This Land” called it “first-rate guitar pop from a top-shelf band. Close Lobsters could have been just another jangle group, but they have a lot more going for them than just chiming Rickenbackers
