New venue but with the same amount of talent, the third Gold Sounds Festival prepares to take over Leeds University Union this May.

There’s a lot to be said for Leeds’ music festivals – they’re some of the best around, whether you’re camping in a muddy field in the middle of nowhere or traipsing around the city with a beer in hand. The latest name to add to that list is Gold Sounds Festival on the second May bank holiday weekend in 2015.
Having brought us two fine days of fuzzed up rock’n’roll music at Brudenell Social Club in 2014, featuring the likes of Cloud Nothings, Merchandise, Cheatahs and Sky Larkin, they’re at it again for 2015.
This time, however, they’ve taken their all-dayer to Leeds University Union on Monday 25th May 2015 to make the most of their abundance of venues in what’s sure to carry on the fledgling brilliance of the previous events.
Headline duty is taken by The Fat White Family who have been in our venues and at our festivals incessantly over the past two years – and that’s no complaint. After sets bordering on carnage at Leeds Festival, Live at Leeds and Beacons last year, they’ll have no problem tearing the roof off Gold Sounds Festival this year.
They’ll be joined by The Wytches who continue to obliterate live music fans with the filthy grunge that’s won them a slew of fans on debut record ‘Annabel Dream Reader’ – it’s when you see them live that they really come into their own though.
Canadian punks Fucked Up are also on the Gold Sounds Festival bill for 2015, and return to Leeds after christening Belgrave Music Hall last summer with their relentless fourth LP ‘Glass Boys’.
They’ll be joined by the returning Hinds, formerly known as Deers, who played the last all-dayer back in November. It’s also just their second Leeds show, and with the hype machine gathering pace around them, will be worth checking out.
Glasgow duo Honeyblood will also be at Leeds University Union in May. Their rough and ready self-titled album was released last year and was undoubtedly one of the most exciting debut releases of 2014.
Sitting alongside them on the Gold Sounds Festival line up are Big Deal, in preparation for the release of their just finished third album. 2011’s ‘Lights Out’ was a welcome introduction, before the brilliant ‘June Gloom’ was released in 2013.
Our favourite Mancunian post-punk quartet Pins will be also be making an appearance. They’ve finished their second LP ‘Wild Nights’ and will be showing it off just before its release on Monday 8th June 2015.
To open up proceedings, there are four hot new artists that are well worth getting down early for. Happyness, Pity Sex, Colleen Green and the returning Theo Verney will all be gracing Gold Sounds Festival with their presence. That’s eleven bands for just twenty quid – Gold Sounds is incredible value and an incredible festival, but don’t just take our word for it, find out for yourself.

great escape

We are thrilled to announce the first 150 artists to join our 10th anniversary festival line-up including southern soul-rock quartet Alabama Shakes, the first Brighton Dome show artist to be announced. As one of the most anticipated artists in 2012, they played to just 400 people, the same year that they delivered their hit debut album ‘Boys & Girls‘. The band will triumphantly return in 2015 to bring their powerful live show to The Great Escape’s biggest stage.

The venues, churches, pubs, streets and bandstands that make up the 30+ venues in use across Brighton will be bursting with future sounds across every genre including experimental folk singer Soak, reflective LA-dwelling songwriter Tobias Jesso Jr., alt-punk BBC Sound of 2015 nominees Slaves, disarmingly emotive hip hop artist Loyle Carner and lovelorn electronic soul artist Dan Bodan.

Also amongst the first 150 artists joining the line-up today is North London’s dreamy electronic trio Real Lies, wistful and soaring melodies from Flo Morrisey, Brighton born producer and Chase & Status collaborator Louis Mttrs, futurist electropop from Jack Garratt, Winnipeg hip hop collective The Lytics, heavily textured synth soundscapes from Oceaan, Swedish pop-noir songstress Seinabo Sey, powerful evocative vocalist Laura Doggett, Essex teenage talent Rat Boy, Welsh indie-rock group Pretty Vicious, Swedish-American pop innovator Mapei, Dublin four-piece Girl Band, Malian desert punk band Songhoy Blues and, returning to the Great Escape after their legendary debut in 2012, London-based folktronica foursome Django Django.

Following last week’s announcement of the final 150 bands playing at TGE 2015 we have updated our highlights per day to include some of the new additions. The Cribs, Blanck Mass, Gaz Coombes, Queen Kwong, Tkay Maidza and Tropics are amongst these new artists.

The Great Escape is the biggest new music festival in Europe and our equivalent of Austin’s SXSW. As much a industry trade show as a festival it offers an vast line-up of hundreds of bands from around the world playing dozens of venues spread across Brighton city centre. For a novice it is an overwhelming and chaotic experience.  Getting in to see the hottest bands requires military planning, nous and boundless energy.  Be prepared for long queues and sweaty small venues. The Great Escape Convention (industry conference), The Alternative Escape and Brighton Dome Shows all run alongside the main three-day event.

Music highlights: Alabama Shakes, Django Django, Dutch Uncles, H. Hawkline, Jack Garratt, Kate Tempest, Lapsley, Pretty Vicious, Turbowolf, Zun Zun Egui

long division

Now in it’s 5th year, Wakefields Long Division Festival has grown from strength to strength. In its short history the festival has grown in stature and played a significant part in getting the city’s old music venue, Unity Hall re-opened last year. In its heyday Wakefield and especially Unity Hall played host to some of the biggest names around – The Damned, The Specials, Iron Maiden, The Ramones, Eurythmics to name a few – So it’s great to see that thanks to Long Division, Wakefield is well and truly set once again to be put back at the top for live music in the North.

Dean Freeman, Long Division Founder:

“It’s hard to believe it’s five years since I started Long Division. Wakefield has come a long way in that time. The thing that excites me most about Long Division is that it still excites me. It’s still so much fun to organise, and to see and hear such amazing bands in my hometown. And then to meet people from all over the country who have travelled here and are having such a great time. I’ve just got back from a trip meeting the big artist booking agents in London; they all know about Wakefield now, because of this festival.
I’m so pleased to have Ash play in Wakefield. Although they are seen as a guitar band, I think they are one of the best pop bands ever. Tim Wheeler writes amazing, classic pop songs. Long Division has always been about true Indie music, the alternative, the DIY. I think Ash embody that, it just so happens they have some of the catchiest songs ever! To see and hear the sing-alongs in Unity Works will be amazing. And yet, they are only the tip of the iceberg for a line-up with over 80 bands.”

Returning this year to its familiar summer dates the weekend will take place from June 12th – 14th. Venues taking part this year include Unity Works Major and Minor Halls as the festival hub, with The Hop (Upstairs and downstairs), Wakefield Theatre Royal, The Orangery, Westgate Chapel and Players providing seven locations all within spitting distance of each other. With over 90 bands including loads of local talent and top names such as Ash, British Sea Power, Pulled Apart By Horses and The Fat White Family it looks set to be one of the best urban festivals of 2015.

Among the many acts the weekends highlights include –
Friday 12th June – British Sea Power play Unity Works (Playing a greatest hits set)
Saturday 13th June – One wristband, seven venues, 80 bands including Ash, Pulled Apart by Horses, Fat White Family and loads more to be announced.
Sunday 14th June – Watch a live album by The Ainsley Band being made. A special event at Unity Works in association with Greenmount Studios (The Cribs, Pulled Apart by Horses).

Confirmed acts so far include;

BRITISH SEA POWER | ASH | PULLED APART BY HORSES | FAT WHITE FAMILY | THE LOVELY EGGS | BOXED IN | MENACE BEACH | BRAWLERS | THE BURNING HELL | WITHERED HAND | TOM WILLIAMS | ROZI PLAIN | TUFF LOVE | CRYBABYCRY | HER NAME IS CALLA | SAM AIREY | ALGERNON DOLL | THE INCREDIBLE MAGPIE BAND | SEAZOO | THE AINSLEY BAND | FOREVER CULT | THOMAS WILBY GANG | NARCS | THE DO’S | FUR BLEND | BI-LINGUAL | CHARLIE PADFIELD | KLEINE SCHWEINE | LOZ CAMPBELL

lunar fest

LIVE ARTISTS CONFIRMED FOR Lunar Festival 2015
Tinariwen // Wilko Johnson // PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING // Bootleg Beatles // The Sun Ra Arkestra/ The Fall – Re-mit // The Amazing Snakeheads // Julian Cope // Radiophonic Workshop // Allah-Las // Sylvan Esso // Goblin – Claudio Simonetti’s // The Pretty Things // Orlando Julius // The Heliocentrics // Syd Arthur // Jane Weaver // Mark Radcliffe // My Brightest Diamond // Robyn Hitchcock // Mike Heron // Trembling Bells // Zun Zun Egui // Midnight Bonfires // The Ouse Valley Singles Club // Rhino & The Ranters // Benjamin Folke Thomas // The Drink // Whyte Horses // Whispering Knights // PLANK // DAISY VAUGHAN // MATTHEW EDWARDS & THE IMPERSONATORS // BYRON HARE // SAMS BROTHER

The Lunar Festival is a newcomer to the scene,  and one of the earlier festivals at the start of the season, brought to us by the organisers of other Midlands events like Moseley Folk festival.  It may not have the scale of the more established boutique gatherings, but its eccentric theatrical line-up marks it out as a special event in the festival year.  Set near the birthplace of Nick Drake, this intimate family festival joins the dots across everything from funk and soul to jazz and African sounds, electronic space explorations, psych and indie.  Alongside new talent, last year saw the eccentric brilliance of Arthur Brown and  The Polyphonic Spree; this year we’re treated to performances from idiosyncratic rebels Julian Cope and Wilko Johnson. There may not be as much in a way of additional entertainment, but the music line-up and its beautiful farm setting (complete with bemused horses, donkeys, pigs and cows) make for a very special experience that can endure the calamities of June weather.

Music highlights: Allah-Las, The Fall, Jane Weaver, Julian Cope, Pretty Things, Public Service Broadcasting, Sun Ra Arkestra, Tinariwen, Wilko Johnson

Tickets and full line-up information: http://lunarfestival.co.uk

The full line up is nearly complete which will be announced in late January along with the days that the artists will be performing! We are hugely excited about this announcement as its looking very special indeed!

deershed

The family friendly music, arts and science festival has just unveiled its first band announcements for this year’s event. Now firmly established as one of the jewels in the Northern festival crown, Deer Shed returns for its sixth annual outing over the last weekend July. And what a weekend it promises to be if the first artists for Deer Shed Festival 6 are anything to go by.

The term ‘family festival’ was invented to describe Deer Shed. In fact, if you don’t have any offspring in tow you may feel a little out of place. Even its comedy tent is PG-rated.  There is a huge array of children’s activities and family-friendly entertainment.  It would all be very village fete were it not for the fact that Deer Shed’s music-line up is pretty spot on. There are definitely some heritage acts to entertain the parents but there is also plenty of interesting new sounds and names familiar to 6 Music connoisseurs.  As you may imagine, the crowds are very polite, the toilets are clean and the mood is happy. Sadly, most of the fun draws to a close at around midnight, with only one venue open till 2 am and most of the entertainment ending on Sunday afternoon.

Music highlights: Billy Bragg, Boxed In, Emmy the Great, Honeyblood, John Grant,Menace Beach, The Pictish Trail, Shopping, The Unthanks, The Wedding Present

Tickets and full line-up information: http://deershedfestival.com

For DSF6 we welcome John Grant, Billy Bragg, The Unthanks, The Wedding Present, Dan Croll, The Felice Brothers, Ibibio Sound Machine, Honeyblood, Black Rivers, Emmy The Great, Damien Dempsey, James Yorkston, Diagrams, Menace Beach, Kiran Leonard, The Pictish Trail, The Lost Brothers, Lisa O’Neill, Fatherson, Eliza Shaddad, Curtis Eller, Rozi Plain, Cattle And Cane, Serious Sam Barrett, Furs, Maia and Deborah Rose with much more music still to come in the coming weeks http://www.deershedfestival.com/music
