Monica Salazar and Jared Olmsted are both from California but they met and formed Courtship Ritual here in Brooklyn. They describe themselves ,Courtship Ritual are not a chillwave group, they are not a witch house group, they don’t play EDM music and they don’t play dubstep. Courtship Ritual are an original Post-Pop group of 2014, and their ditties are short, succinct and every one a potential swan song.
What do they sound like then The most prominent components to these ears are Salazar’s voice and Olmstead’s liquid bass, giving Courtship Ritual a dark, mossy vibe. There’s a little David J in there, maybe some early Eno or Japan, and they would make good openers for someone like Dum Dum Girls. The band’s debut album, Pith, is out now on GODMODE RECORDS.

The ANTLERS – ” Doppelganger ” ( Daniel Lanois Remix )
Posted: November 6, 2014 in MUSICTags: Brooklyn, Familiars, the Antlers
This is a truly beautiful remix from Daniel Lanois,
The Antlers is an “Indie Rock Band” currently based in “Brooklyn” New York City. The band’s lyrics are written and sung by Peter Silberman. Their music is composed and performed by Silberman, Darby Cicci (trumpet, upright/electric bass, keyboards, synths, vocals) and Michael Lerner (drums). The Antlers’ makeup has developed from a lo-fi, bedroom recording folk project into a heavily lush and orchestrated rock group with an aptitude for melodious experimentation and layering. The instrumentation consists of vocals, electric guitar, keyboards/synths, drums and an array of other instruments including piano, horns, strings, and electronic elements.
This is the Antler’s 5th full-length studio album entitled “Familiars” was released on June 17, 2014 via Anti Records in the U.S. and Transgressive Records in the U.K./Europe. The album was recorded and produced by the band in their Brooklyn based studio, and mixed by Chris Coady. On March 31, 2014, after releasing a Cryptic video teaser the week prior, the band announced the release of the nine-track album along with a music video to the album’s first single “Palace”. The video was directed by Hana Tajima. Darby Cicci designed the artwork for the album.”Familiars has received rave reviews from publications such as “Rolling Stone” who commented that “Familiars” finds the Antlers on a new, magnificent level of heavy songwriting.” Many critics alluded to the growth of The Antler’s artistic approach on the album. Mojo magazine called the work “another existentially-minded beauty…turning agony into something approaching ecstasy.” may be the defining work of the band’s stamp on the modern indie rock scene. “Loud and Quiet” also commented on the record’s success: “Slow-burning, poised and richly beautiful… The Antlers have been responsible for a handful of the most soul-shifting moments in guitar-based indie rock over the last few years, and this should see the band cement their place in the genre’s upper echelons.
TV on the RADIO – ” Careful You “

“Careful You,” from the new album Seeds. Pre-order the album now and download the song instantly!About a week after TV on the Radio released their last album, “Nine Types of Light”, in April 2011, their bassist Gerard Smith passed away from lung cancer. Still, the Brooklyn indie rockers soldiered on with tour dates before taking what one must imagine was a necessary hiatus. Now they’ve returned, and in addition to wanting to root for this band, the songs are really good in an icy New Wave/Nine Inch Nails kind of way. I haven’t been this excited about a TV on the Radio album since 2006’s Return to Cookie Mountain.
SUNFLOWER BEAN – ” Tame Impala “
Posted: November 5, 2014 in MUSICTags: Brooklyn, Psych Indie Rock, Sunflower Bean, Tame Impala
In a Brooklyn sea of dream-pop and indie-rock, Sunflower Bean wants to bring back some good, old-fashioned rock-‘n’-roll. The trio—comprised of Julia Cumming, Nick Kivlen, and Jacob Farber—have taken it upon themselves to make up their own version of rock-‘n’-roll for the digital age. Drawing from lo-fi sounds and dark rock and psychedelic undertones, Sunflower Bean’s music is not as delicate as the band’s name might lead you to believe: it’s sultry and hypnotic.
Sunflower Bean’s EP Rock & Roll Heathen will make its debut this autumn, but in the meantime, the band has been touring New York and currently the West Coast. We’re excited to premiere “Tame Impala,” an invigorating rock track from Sunflower Bean’s upcoming EP that serves as an ode to the band Tame Impala, which Sunflower Bean sees as a modern-day Led Zeppelin (fittingly, Tame Impala itself has a song named “Led Zeppelin”).
BEACH SLANG – ” We Are Nothing ” and American Girls and French Kisses “

Beach Slang are already a favourite band for the year, they recently performed at the CMJ week in New York City, with a huge chunk of the crowd singing along with their anthemic tunes, Even when vocalist James Snyder stepped away from the Mic the crows sang along. Their first EP came out about a year ago the line up of the band features former members of Weston, Nona, and Ex Friends they play huge guitar rock anthems that recall comparisons with The Replacements and early Goo Goo Dolls, with a thrilling live show great lyrics earworm melodies and great tunes.
GEMS – ” Sinking Stone “
Posted: November 3, 2014 in MUSICTags: Brooklyn, Gems, Medusa EP, Synth Pop
GEMS’ sparkling and finely-tuned debut EP, ” Medusa” was one of the most promising releases of last year, so it’s nice to see that they’re still getting some push with a new video for “Sinking Stone,” which is probably the heaviest track on that release. The video, which is directed by BRTHR, captures the hazy desperation of the song well — slowed-down visuals depict two off-the-rails lovers as they joyride cop cars, do drugs, and play with guns. It all ends with a gruesome Bonnie & Clyde-esque standoff in the desert. It’s a haunting and atmospheric video, appropriate for this young and talented pairing.
ROBERT PLANT – ” Live at BAM Brooklyn 28th September 2014

On 28 September, Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters closed out the Nonesuch Records 50th Anniversary showcase at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Now, for a limited time, fans can re-live the entire thrilling performance over at NPR.
NPR said of the show, “Robert Plant was just brilliant in Brooklyn on Sept. 28th. Plant and his Sensational Space Shifters played a stunning set of music that did what Robert Plant does best: mixing up American blues, British rock, North African rhythms and even some electronica with that voice, still filled with passion after all these years.”
this was broadcast on a live stream on the internet that’s why I think it stutters and video doesn’t match but the audio quality is great…..
COURTSHIP RITUAL – ” Champagne Cages “
Posted: November 3, 2014 in MUSICTags: Brooklyn, CMJ 2014, Courtship Ritual, Electronica, Post Punk
The Brooklyn duo Courtship Ritual make spare, hushed, minimal indie-pop, like Beach House with a slight dance-music edge, or like the xx with a little more old-school 4AD reverb in their sound. That’s a simple, durable sound, but on their debut album “Pith“, they’re already exploring its edges, changing its definition from song to song. Pith has been out on cassette for a little while now, but it’s about to get a proper wide release. My friend Nick Sylvester produced the album, and he’s putting it out on his Godmode label. This is one of the best indie albums you’ll hear this summer.
MITSKI MIYAWAKI – ” I Will ” and ” Townie “

23-year-old Brooklyn newcomer Mitski Miyawaki releases her new album ‘Bury Me At Make Out Creek’ on November 11, an album that doesn’t flinch once detailing the brutalities of love and the fringes of insanity it pushes us towards. “One word from you and I would jump off this ledge, baby,” she pledges sternly over melancholy keyboards on woozy, last-dance-at-prom slow grind ‘First Love / Late Spring’, after yearning for “A love that falls as fast as a body from a balcony’ over noise-pop guitars on ‘Townie’. With fuzzy echoes of ‘Myra Lee’ era Cat Power, it’s a record that doesn’t tug at your heart-strings as much as it mercilessly pounds at them,
‘I Will’ is one of the album’s sweeter moments: Mitski pleading a lover “stay with me” over a slurring bass line and washy keyboards that bubble over into epic, stadium-sized synth-pop granduer as the song climaxes. .
