OUR GIRL – ” Our Girl “

Our Girl have shared their self-titled single, which you guessed it is titled ‘Our Girl’, which carries on the theme of self-titled releases and is the Brighton trio’s first release since their self-titled debut EP dropped last November.

The new single is produced by former The Coral member Bill Ryder-Jones  who brings over the fuzzy hooks which were plentiful on the Merseyside man’s last record West Kirby County Primary which shine through on ‘Our Girl’.

Soph Nathan guitarist vocalist from the band said more about the song, she said: “Our Girl was the first song I ever wrote, the first song we played together, and the first demo we ever recorded and shared with people. We ended up naming the band after it! So this song feels like the perfect re-introduction to everything we’ve got coming.”

It’s a busy old time for the Brighton band at the minute, as they are currently touring the UK as part of Class Of tour alongside Pale Waves and Bloxx then they will be heading stateside to perform at SXSW. Following this, they will then be supporting The Magic Gang on their upcoming tour and have their own headline show at London’s Moth Club on 22nd May.

Enter the White Room. Inside you’ll find a serrated blend of sky-gaze psychedelia and raucous distortion. The Brighton-based five-piece have already won plaudits for their compelling live shows. Released last year after support slots for Weller and acclaimed performances at Reading and Leeds, their debut EP ‘Fizzy Liquid’ was described by NME as ‘driving, and pretty lawless’. This year White Room will play Dot to Dot, The Great Escape and Live at Leeds, with many more to be announced at a later date.

The latest release by this Brighton five-piece and signee’s to Liverpool’s famed Deltasonic Records was a double EP and a concept record of sorts entitled Eight, released last December. The double-EP contains touches of ‘60s classic psych (the group is named for a Cream song, after all), rock and contemporary synth-pop. Jake Smallwood and Josie McNamara intermingle vocals brilliantly, as on the devilishly catchy chorus of “Stole the I.V.” The EP’s kaleidoscopic, escapist lyrics mixed with dreamy soundscapes via distorted guitars and transcendent synths make for an overwhelmingly compelling listen. White Room have supported the legendary Paul Weller back in the UK, and hopefully their first U.S. shows aren’t too far off.

Nick Hudson is a composer/musician/artist based in the UK.. His queer gnostic post-punk ensemble The Academy Of Sun are currently working on their new album ‘Codex Novena’.

“…Like if Nicks Drake and Cave had a homunculus moonchild in a marriage presided over by William Burroughs” – Scott Treleaven, This Is The Salivation Army. Describing themselves as queer, gnostic, orchestral post-punk, The Academy of the Sun are centered around the rich vocals and nuanced songwriting of Nick Hudson. And, with Codex Novena, Hudson has created an album of sweeping ambition and startling contrasts. Opener “Our Planets” builds into a searing polytonal wall of noise which owes a debt to Tony Conrad and John Cale’s work on “Inside The Dream Syndicate.”  This might seem to be preparing us for a collection of dissonant experimentation. Yet the faint hearted who stopped there would miss out on the delicate folkloric wonders to come.  Hudson’s lyrics and melodies always deliver unexpected twists and the arrangements here are masterful.

No one could accuse The Dials of hiding their influences. Their sound is a glorious mix of late 60s pop-psych, fuzzed up guitars and funky 70s style keyboard and synth lines. Yet this is no exercise in homage. What sets The Dials apart is both the standard of their songwriting and Joe Allenby and Rich Parrish’s perfectly judged vocal melodies.

The Dials have been familiar faces on the Brighton music scene since 2002, playing their own peculiar blend of psychedelia, surf, folk and jazz garage. Dermot Watson, Andy Taylor, Rich Parrish and Joe Allenby-Byrne sound like The Zombies, Funkadelic, Caravan and Miles Davis jamming at the UFO Club on a rainy September night.

Their eponymous debut album in 2007 showcased a bewilderingly eclectic collection of songs which somehow won the hearts of small pockets of radio DJs and listeners worldwide. Their showcase at NXNE in Toronto was described as “pure energy, hard-howling, Brit-infused honky-tonk”.

After famously requiring a fire crew of nine to rescue them from a bank vault in which they had become trapped whilst recording 2009’s “Companions of the Rosy Hours”, the band disintegrated in a whirlwind of passive aggression. Dermot and Andy shut themselves away and began writing the album which would become the critically-acclaimed “The End of the Pier” (2013). Self-produced and recorded all over Brighton with a rotating cast of musicians including Gordon Russell (Dr Feelgood), the album was eventually released with the current lineup established.

For the last three years, the Dials have been recording in UNKLE’s Toy Room studio in Brighton with Ben Thackeray (Patti Smith, Nick Cave, My Bloody Valentine, Gruff Rhys) producing. Featuring pump organs, mandolins, Moogs, mellotrons, pastoral folk and Bavarian waltzes, “That Was The Future” will be released on vinyl and CD on October 13th 2017.

Songs such as the genuinely funky “Cuckoo Stone” or the Spencer Davis Group style strut of “The Nark,” display an effortless cool. The band’s previous releases hinted at something great, but “That Was The Future” comes straight out and delivers it.

PEGGY SUE – ” Slow Fade “

Today marks the return of London-via-Brighton indie duo Peggy Sue, made up of Rosa Slade and Katy Young, who have shared their first song in three years.

The pair have shared their new single ‘Slow Fade‘ and on top of this have announced a headline London show at the Shacklewell Arms on December 2nd.

“Slow Fade“ is the first single from Peggy Sue‘s upcoming fifth album, due 2018. After a three year break, during which Rosa Slade and Katy Young have been performing with all-female singing group Deep Throat Choir, ‘”Slow Fade” is an apt comeback; a melancholy celebration of patience.

The track is a dreamy, melodic breakup song; one that lets you hang around lazily in the days when you aren’t ok yet. “Heartbreak takes ages” says Katy Young. “That’s kind of the best and the worst thing about it. I was pretty heartbroken and trying all these tactics to make it finish faster; going out, staying in, talking about it, not talking about. But at some point I realised that when I was ok again, it would be because the love was done. And so Slow Fade is about letting it take its time – partly because you don’t really have a choice and partly because a bit of me wanted to make that pretty sadness last as long as I could.”

Slow Fade‘ is the first single from Peggy Sue’s upcoming 4th album. Release date: December 1st

The Normally EP, the follow up to their debut single Sleeper, was recorded in the Summer in one day with Steve Ansell of Blood Red Shoes.
“Lots of the songs are about emotional distance – not knowing what someone else is thinking, and how that can make you feel crazy. It can cloud my judgment to the point that shrugging it off as indifference is the easiest thing to do. Although it still reflects those feelings of self-doubt, Being Around is probably the most hopeful song on the EP. It focuses on the positivity in the relationships I have, and the gratitude and care I have towards those people for being who they are, and being there for me in the way they are,” explains frontwoman and guitarist Soph Nathan.

Nathan’s honest and personal lyrics float in a delicious array of sounds: rhythmic drum and guitar hooks make dynamic jumps to thick garage-rock riffs, then suddenly cut to beautiful, intimate moments of lone guitar and reverb-hugged vocals. You’d think Soph Nathan in particular might struggle to fit in allocated hours for napping these days; besides maintaining an outstandingly colourful shirt collection, and shredding guitars for The Big Moon, she also fronts ace trio Our Girl. Signed to Cannibal Hymns – the same Brighton label backing the likes of Dream Wife, Abattoir Blues, and Tigercub – the band specialise in inward-looking, complex meshes of haze. Our Girl’s latest, Being Around is their most ambitious yet. Our Girl have shared the stage with the likes of Sunflower Bean, The Wytches, and Dream Wife and head out in support of The Japanese House later this year.

White Room’s astonishing live show has transformed them into one of the country’s most sought after unsigned bands. With a flurry of labels on their trail, White Room have opted to sign to Deltasonic, and this relationship is already bearing fruit. Following a highly successful summer of festivals including IOW Y Not and Reading and Leeds, where they earned plaudits for their enigmatic and at times raucous live sets.
