The Limiñanas
The French duo the Liminanas, a dream object that has become a reality for passionate fans of a purist rock that does not stop a pinch of second degree, continues its well-marked path. While waiting for the album to be released in January, discover “Shadow People”, a tasteful taste of their new vintage.

“Doing something new with the old”, such would be the credo of Lionel Limiñana , head of the monomaniac duo of Perpignan whose aura continues to grow. And if it was more the opposite, make old with new? Basically, what does it matter, since the result is the same, the group now proudly heading for its aesthetic line dictated by an immoderate love for the dark underground rock of the Velvet’s or the garage primitive sound of the Standells combined with the most cheerful songs of yéyé and Italian sixties pop. A fine rigor that once made happiness, in their genres, Cramps or Jesus & Mary Chain and, today, at random, Moon Duo. With the Limiñanas a Frenchy touch that makes the difference, this zest of glamor and romance distanced that reinforces their singularity.

Shadow People , is a new album to be released on January 19th, mainly recorded in Berlin in studio apartment of the fan of choice Anton Newcombe, brings some small changes in the continuity. Some variations sound, reinforced by a small skewer of guests, as  Emmanuelle Seigner, Betrand Belin or Peter Hook (definitely addicted to the duo and so back), and, novelty, a common thread – the term concept album would make them an insult: the record unfolds vaguely songs the journey of a young man (Lionel) grown in the 80s to his groups on the margins that have shaped his taste and his style forever. Suffice to say that the Limiñanas persist and sign, concocting with as much flavor, hardly retouching the recipe, this good old dish which we definitely do not get tired. For proof, in scout of the album, the clip of Shadow People, shot at home, in Cabestany, in front of the discotheque Ikea furnished with the couple, with guest encrusted star Emmanuelle Seigner.

French duo The Limiñanas are putting the finishing touches to their new album”Malamore” which will be out early 2018 but in the meantime have a new EP titled Istanbul is Sleepy, due out November 17th via Because Music. The title track is a collaboration with Anton Newcombe of Brian Jonestown Massacre, with whom The Limiñanas first worked on a Kinks cover for MOJO magazine. Anton takes lead vocals — “He was inspired, in particular, by The Cult during their ‘Rain’ period,” says Lionel Limiñana — which takes the otherwise very Limiñanas-y (groovy motorik psych-garage) track into new, cool territory. Newcombe’s “Rain” inspiration enters into the video, too, which premieres in this post.

The Liminanas have a few U.K tour dates coming up, including their first ever London show.

TESS PARKS - BLOOD HOT LP

A native of Toronto, Tess Parks moved to London, England at the age of seventeen where she briefly studied photography before deciding to focus on music. Tess made an impression on industry legend Alan McGee, founder of Creation Records, albeit the timing of their meeting could hardly have been less ideal; McGee was no longer involved in music and Tess was due to move back to Toronto. After moving back to her hometown in 2012, Tess formed a band on the advice of McGee and less than a year after their meeting, he returned to music with his new label, 359 Music.

Tess became one of his first signings and released her debut record ‘Blood Hot’ in November 2013 to excellent reviews. One reviewer described her as “Patti Smith on Quaaludes”. Others have mentioned her “gauzy psychedelic sound” and “smouldering voice”. Alan McGee himself said: “She’s only 24 and is already an amazing songwriter… she just doesn’t quite know she is yet … her most beautiful quality is her lack of ego. Tess is an amazing lady”.

June 2015 saw the spine-tingling collaboration between Tess Parks and Anton Newcombe (Brian Jonestown Massacre) and the resultuing LP ‘I Declare Nothing’ released to critical acclaim on ‘A’ Recordings. “Somedays” is the debut single from Tess Parks‘ upcoming re issue record ‘Blood Hot’, which will be released by 359 Music.  Tess describes her songs as “lo-fi alternative drones with a hypnotic vibe”. Another of her influences is Elliott Smith. “I was brought up on Bob Dylan and Nirvana and The Beatles and Rolling Stones and Zeppelin and all that good shit,” says Tess. She’s hung out with the likes of the Dandy Warhols and met Alan McGee in London. “We stayed in touch, that was it really. I just got so lucky,” adds Tess. “I love Oasis, Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine… He’s affiliated with all of my favourite musicians.”
Shot on Location in Port Severn, Ontario.

Open Minds Now Close - Single, The Brian Jonestown Massacre

Named in tribute to the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist and his influence in introducing Eastern culture and music into the world of Western rock & roll, the Brian Jonestown Massacre formed in San Francisco, California in 1990. Some 40 different members passed through the group’s ranks over the next half-decade, but the focal point always remained singer/guitarist Anton Newcombe, who, along with bassist Matt Hollywood, guitarist Dean Taylor, organist Mara Regal, accordionist Dawn Thomas, drummer…These tracks give an idea of the changing rhythms of The Brian Jonestown Massacre for the new album. Heavy hypnotic beating drums , with very odd twists and pitchshifting at the extreme

Brian Jonestown Massacre announce new album Third World Pyramid, check out new single Sun Ship

On the 28th of October 2016 Brian Jonestown Massacre will release Third World Pyramid on A Recordings, the lead single Sun Ship will be released next Friday on 10” honey coloured vinyl backed by new track Playtime which will be exclusive to this release. The release of Third World Pyramid sees Anton Newcombe’s prolific streak that has seen working on a number of projects in recent times.

Third World Pyramid was recorded at Newcombe’s studio in March 2016, and The Sun Ship is a classic psychedlica Brian Jonestown Massacre track with an added Eastern influence. Anton’s inimitable vocal style is instantly recognisable, as are the beautiful swirling guitars whilst B-Side Playtime is a more subdued affair.

Over the past few years, Anton Newcombe and company’s brand of 60’s-infused psych-rock has taken on a more electronic vibe, while still retaining much of the classic BJM sound they’ve patented over the years. The two songs here find the band both looking back to their 90’s work–with the shambling west coast melodies and head-bobbin’ grooves we know and love–as well as to the propulsive Eastern-tinged sound of much of last year’s ‘Aufheben,‘ only sans electronics, and way more stretched out and jammed out. Not to mention some brand new touches.

“Food for Clouds” is instantly recognizable as a BJM track, with a laid-back, drugged-out catchiness that many bands have imitated–especially during the recent psych resurgence–but few can match. There’s a definite surf-rock feel here in the guitars, but with background horns giving it a rather unique sound that’s totally unlike the surfy psych that’s abundant today with bands like Allah-Las, Holy Wave, and The Growlers. Anton’s vocals are the strongest they’ve been in years, imo, and more upfront as opposed to being buried in the mix like on the past few albums.

The nearly ten-minute “Everything Fades to White” has more of the ‘Aufheben’ sound, with Indian-style melodies and hypnotic rhythms, but without the electronic accompaniment so prevalent on that album, although the kick drum beats may be artificial (or enhanced). Eastern-y, “devotional”-type chanting/singing provides the only vocals on this trance-inducer, and when combined with the droning atmospherics, makes for an excellent “headphone journey” track, with the sound falling somewhere between 1996’s ‘Satanic Majesties’ and the aforementioned ‘Aufheben

After releasing a dozen albums since 1995, the ever-enigmatic San Francisco psychedelic icon
Anton Newcombe & cohorts are back with a new 3-song EP. You get a slinky, rhythmic, Bowie-
esque psych/pop ballad. The 2nd track has a more rhythmic beat that recalls Pulp/Jarvis Cocker/
Dexys. Both are prominently punctuated with horns. The `B’ side is a long Middle East/Indian
influenced psychedelic number with a 60s mystic Beatles flow. The 12″ EP was a “Record Store Day” release on
purple/pink vinyl, limited to 2000 copies.

“FRIENDLIES”  from the album “I Declare Nothing”  – via ‘a’ Recordings due out 29th June .

Tess Parks, the girl with the authentically psychedelic sound, has been busy creating a record that is about to launch her firmly off the ground. Last year Parks collaborated with the legendary Brian Jonestown Massacre frontman, Anton Newcombe to produce the tantalising, ‘I Declare Nothing’ album out later this month. We’re lucky enough to have been able to listen to the entire album and can safely say that she’s destined for big things, if working with Anton Newcombe on only her second album to date didn’t tell you already. The video for ‘Friendlies’ by Tess Parks and Anton Newcombe,

Anton Newcombe -is the leader of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, who returned last May with their 14th full-length album ‘Revelation’ to critical acclaim. It is the first album that was fully recorded and produced at Anton Newcombe’s recording studio in Berlin and was released on his record label A Recordings. It was supported by a successful European tour.

Two dozen band members later and numerous “ups and downs” (some have been famously sensationalized in the media), the one thing that has always remained consistent for this psychedelic collective, is front man Mr. Anton Alfred Newcombe.

Work in progress: 6/3/15 Berlin songwriter Anton Newcombe  and Tess Parks, In what’s been a quietly kept open secret for quite some time now, Brian Jonestown Massacre auteur Anton Newcombe has been working in Berlin with Toronto indie chanteuse Tess Parks for about a year now, sketching out slices of austere, almost baroque beauty without any of the fanfare of a BJM project. The duo, recording with engineer Fabien Leseure, have produced a handful of tracks for an album tentatively slated to be called “I Declare Nothing,”

which at this point is still considered a ‘work in progress.’ The latest song leaked out of the studio is this stately beauty that suggests the sad, dissolute grandeur of Crime & the City Solution as fronted by Nico. Everything we’ve heard from these sessions boasts a similar wrecked elegance, sincerely hopes the album finds its release some time this year. We tend to like it when our hearts are battered with a certain type of melancholia that brings to mind Nikki Sudden come back to life, and anyway, we’re all keen to pencil the album into our end-of-year lists.
