FIELD DAY – Victoria Park 6th/7th June 2015
Posted: June 2, 2015 in FESTIVALS, MUSICTags: Caribou, DIIV, Field Day, Mac deMarco, Matthew E White, Patti Smith, Victoria Park
Opening summer festival season in style, London’s most diverse festival festival,Field Day, returns to Victoria Park in East London this weekend.
One of this year’s headliners, Canadian electronic maverick Caribou, is sure to be bringing a blistering trademark audio-visual assault to match his sweet electro-tinged grooves. Another main act are reformed shoegaze legends Ride, who put Oxford on the guitar map when Radiohead were still just a twinkle in Thom Yorke‘s eye.
But headliners are just tip of the gigantic musical iceberg. As you might expect, there is a plethora of the hotly-tipped and devoutly followed indie acts around, from the kooky charm offensive of Liverpudlians Stealing Sheep to Django Django and Savages.
Both days also feature many of the acts GIITTV have been praising to the hilt of late. FKA Twigs‘ live show has seen her headline venues as illustrious as The Roundhouse, building on the critical and commercial success of her widely lauded (and minimally titled) debut album LP1. Imagine an unsettling blend of vocals reminiscent of Kate Bush and an exotic, sultry take on Massive Attack‘s slow motion breakbeat nightmares and you might start getting close to the enigma of FKA Twigs.

Ok, so we all know the Field Day line up is ridiculous and if you’re reading this it’s unlikely we need to instruct you to watch Caribou or Ride or Patti Smith because you obviously should. FKA Twigs, Hookworms, DIIV, Mac DeMarco, John Talbot,Savages, Matthew E. White and Run The Jewels are all amazing too. But we also wanted to share some of the less obvious picks you should make time for during the 6/7 June weekender in Victoria Park.

At the other end of the energy spectrum, US punks Ex-Hex should up the tempo with oodles of three-chord, three- minute garage rock pop charm executed with a don’t-give-a-shit snarl. Expect a sprint through some of the highlights of last year’s Rips LP, as the three piece set about making Green Day sound like one of Radiohead’s more pensive b-sides. The scratchy, wonderfully irritable sounds of Canada’s Viet Cong make for an altogether edgier experience. Or, if you’re in search of something a little more wry and humorous, the downbeat but uplifting sensibilities of Matthew E White might do the trick, combining an earthy folkiness and caustic lyrical wit with knowing nods to the sweet simplicity of original rock ‘n’ roll. As one his best known songs has it, ‘Rock and Roll Is Cold’; but his set will probably be one of the more heartwarming treats of Field Day.
There’s also a serious contingent of psyche to this year’s festival line up, for those looking to drift off to dimensions further flung than the portaloos and burrito stalls. Especially recommended by the GIITTV staff are Hookworms, whose trance-like guitar workouts boast echoes of Spacemen 3 or even veteran space rockers Hawkwind, with more than a dose of Krautrock minimalism. A trait they share with the equally lauded Telegram, whose Matt Wood actually spent 18 months working at Faust‘s HQ in Germany before forming the Anglo-Welsh outfit. And if that all sounds a bit fierce, then the more leisurely and serene sounds of Errors could be the remedy. A self-styled “post-electro” band from Glasgow, Scotland, they’re signed to Rock Action Records, the label founded and managed by the band Mogwai; and they clearly share a certain distinctive gliding sonic sparkle with their label bosses (as well as a love of referencing rave in their titles – ‘How Clean Is Your Acid House?’ being one). With a fresh album – their fifth – called Lease of Lifeemerging recently, the three piece will be showing why they’re one of the most celebrated new live acts around this weekend.

The GHOST of the SABRE TOOTH TIGER – ” Live at Primavera 2015 “
Posted: May 31, 2015 in FESTIVALS, MUSICTags: Charlotte Kemp, Primavera Sound Festival, Sean Lennon, The Ghost of the Sabre Tooth Tiger

Last year 2014, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger (The Goastt) released “Midnight Sun”, a guided tour of bold, shape-shifting sonic murals and evocative lyrical panoramas of psychedelia. Plucking musical ingredients from all over the map, the album has a highly imaginative and distinct feel. It celebrates the unusual and the grandiose but fundamentally just rocks hard and feels good.
Like the hero in the album’s melancholy “Don’t Look Back Orpheus” who takes a journey into a dreamlike underworld, the listener embarks on an auditory voyage of soaring whimsical keyboards and crunching space-age guitars that blends original melodies with kaleidoscopic freakouts. Midnight Sun injects a surreal landscape with colorful, classic hooks.
With an infectious sense of adventure akin to Beck and Flaming Lips, and several years of touring and recording under their belt, the GOASTT takes their creative and savvy approach to psychedelia to new extremes. The ambitious songs flow cleverly together with unexpected ease to tell a vivid and provocative story.
Familiar yet compelling, visceral and vital, Midnight Sun is at once a response to the bizarre world we’ve inherited and helped to create, and a refreshing escapist daydream that, if not hopeful, is keenly insightful. The GOASTT has given us a record that is poised to be a postmodern-psychedelic classic.
The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger has been busy since their debut. The band toured with The Flaming Lips and Tame Impala, performed at the Hollywood Bowl with Jean-Claude Vannier and released a Record Store Day vinyl EP entitled La Carotte Bleue. Muhl released an EP with her teenage folk duo Kemp & Eden, who also performed in the film Greetings From Tim Buckley. Lennon, meanwhile, released a record by his experimental duo Mystical Weapons with Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier, a film score to the indie comedy Alter Egos and produced the new album by Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band.

PINS – ” Young Girls “
Posted: May 24, 2015 in FESTIVALS, MUSICTags: Bella Union Records, Dot to Dot, Manchester, Pins
Ridiculously rad Manchester, UK, quartet PINS are back with a new, second album, “Wild Nights”, out next month and we’re stoked to premiere the video for current single “Young Girls.” Sonically it’s indie-pop edged out with a feeling of questioning melancholy, and just a smidgen of menace, and from the second they hit the screen you wanna be part of their gang. We can barely keep up with these Manchester girls, who continue to make the city that birthed them turn into that proud, motherly type. Following a recent tour in the States with Sleater Kinney, the four-piece post-punk outfit is moving fast and strong through the international music circuit, and we couldn’t be prouder.
It’s not just that they look good—Saint Laurent’s Hedi Slimane is a firm fan—but even when they’re lazing listlessly on a bed, or staring impassively down the barrel of the lens, or, you know, casually wiping blood off a baseball bat, they’ve got a fall-in-line-and-don’t-fuck-with-us attitude that’s magnetic.
“Filmed in Manchester and at favourite look out point ‘The Edge’ in Alderly Edge,” explain PINS. “The video is the tale of four girls, thick as thieves. They are dreamers, they are bold and they are bonded by a secret. All for one and one for all.”
Meanwhile, director Amy Watson, had a very specific vision for this short: “I wanted to play around with the usual ‘girls just wanna have fun’ type of music video. You know, friendship, solidarity, road trips and all the usual tropes of girly bonding. I wanted to take that wholesomeness and push it to a weird place.”
Like we said, don’t mess with these young girls.

The FAT WHITE FAMILY – ” Cream Of The Young “
Posted: May 24, 2015 in FESTIVALS, MUSIC, NOTTINGHAM CITY VENUESTags: Dot to Dot, Nottingham, The Fat White Family, The Green Man Festival
The Fat White Family played perhaps one of the most memorable sets at Green Man Festival this year, here they do a song for the Green Man Sessions TV. These guys don’t really need much of a hard sell, thanks to an imitable fan base that continues to push the name out far and wide – but for the uninitiated, from Fat White Family you can expect invasive, engrossing rock ‘n’ roll and, at times, an unashamed tad of controversy in their live performance. Go and watch them, if you’ve got the balls. they will be at the Nottingham Trent during Dot To Dot,
