Some of the most exciting music we’ve heard recently has emerged from mainland Europe. One of those acts responsible are 52 Hertz Whale, a five-piece hailing from the Slovakian capital of Bratislava. They describe their music as “post everything” which wouldn’t be a bad descriptive were they not as relevantly present as it gets. Led by the inimitable talent that is Dominik Prok, a forceful presence that’s equal parts Mark Lanegan (vocally) and Cedric Bixler (performance-wise). Musically there are elements of grunge, punk, shoegaze and even metal which makes their repertoire a brutal yet potent concoction of styles and ideas.

Recent single “Thin Skin” came out earlier this month and represents arguably their most visceral statement of intent to date. With more new music on the way shortly and live shows about to be confirmed beyond their native motherland, 2020 could be the year these guys become household names in your neck of the woods.

This New York City trio is made up of three siblings: twin brothers Daniel and David Bailen and their little sister, Julia Raised in New York by their classically trained parents, . Their acoustic sound feels like it came from a dusty, ’70s rock LP, giving us the occasional Fleetwood Mac vibe and some of the best sibling harmonies we’ve heard since the Beach Boys. Their debut LP, “Thrilled to Be Here”, was released in 2019, but while the singles have gotten heavy play from local tastemakers WFUV, the band’s yet to really break out beyond the city in a huge way. That should hopefully change in 2020: the kids have the chops to at least be the next HAIM. Try out their heartfelt track “Something Tells Me,” or the moody “I Was Wrong.”

“I Was Wrong” is off the debut album from Bailen “Thrilled To Be Here” available everywhere April 26th, 2019.

More recent releases include a cover of BRMC’s “Salvation,’ and for some holiday fun, their own take on “Christmas is All Around” from Love Actually.

The spectre of violence pushed Lillie West towards something life-affirming. Threats loom around every corner on The Lamb, her sophomore record as Lala Lala: burglars, car crashes, one too many drinks. Inspired by the aftermath of a home invasion West experienced as well as her newfound sobriety, The Lamb is a dark, impressionistic vignette of someone trying to find control in a life marred by chaos that traces a bracing emotional arc from fear through to hope. Simultaneously battered and dreamy, The Lamb has one of the more distinct sonic palettes to be found in 2019 indie rock, recalling the cathartic heat of Car Seat Headrest and Molly Nilsson’s romantic, twinkling reveries in equal measure.

The Lamb’s tearstained, post-midnight sheen also recalls Sky Ferreira’s Night Time, My Time — another album about reclaiming your life in the wake of alienation. But unlike that album’s discomfiting open end, The Lamb closes with West reciting a mantra to live by: “Turn the lights off, keep the bills low / Keep my friends safe, keep my friends close.”

On her third album, queer country artist and anti-white supremacist activist Karen Pittelman and her band The Sorrows tackle one of country music’s age-old demons: What do you do when you build a life with someone only to realize they just aren’t as much as you needed? How do you set up boundaries with people who, through years of familiarity, could take it personally when you even suggest the need for it? The record is chock full of sad songs that offer you a shoulder to cry on and a pat on the back, but that refuse to coddle you.

Have you been looking for a song about broken hearts and longings that linger while also getting a charming honky tonk vibe and some of the sweetest vocals to hit the radio this year? Look no further than this tune from the Queen of Brooklyn’s Queer Country scene. Karen & the Sorrows took the internet by storm in 2019 and this doozy of a song had plenty to do with it.

Caroline Polachek has occupied many spaces during her decade as a musician. From fronting an indie band making sync-friendly earworms and contributing to Beyoncé albums to stints making experimental music under other aliases, she’s proved as malleable as she has been consistent, so the high quality of her debut solo LP “Pang” is unsurprising. Created alongside producer Danny L Harle, the album leans into the PC Music aesthetic, a sideways take on sugary pop melodies and electronic production. Unlike other artists on that roster, however, Polachek isn’t afraid to fully commit to her feelings; written after a painful break-up, Pang covers indecision (“Door”), lust (“So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings”), and self-doubt (“Caroline Shut Up”) in heart-swelling fashion.

Great albums often act as a key to how an artist moves forward, and Pang is proof that you’d back Polachek to go anywhere.

Amber Bain’s music is all soft hues and bruises, the kind of stuff that teenagers die for and that adults who still relate to teenage emotions chase like dreams. Of course this shimmering, achingly gorgeous debut album was co-produced by the 1975’s co-musical mastermind George Daniel — after hearing it, how could it not? I can’t wait to hear what she’s going to do next.

If it feels like Amber Bain’s nom de plume has been everyone’s lips for the last few years, it’s probably because it has been. Tipped as far back as 2015, the Buckinghamshire-born singer-songwriter has received vocal support from Dirty Hit label mates The 1975, and even made the BBC’s Sound of 2017 longlist. But after four exquisitely-layered EPs of dreamy alt-pop, 2018 is poised to be Bain’s breakthrough year. Having spent the tail-end of 2017 in the wilds of Wisconsin, recording her debut album at Bon Iver’s studio, she’s hoping to unveil the results this coming summer.

Formed in 2016, Lemondaze started as a project inspired by the bands of the 90s shoegazing era. Developing their sound over the next few years, Lemondaze have cemented their shoegaze sound with nods to trip hop, post-punk and break beat. Originally from Cambridge, Lemondaze translate a dark and intense eruption of swirling guitars underpinned by thundering bass lines and hypnotic drums.

The band are now beginning to settle to life in london’s dingy music hotbeds. the band, after two years of stop and start gigging have finally master-crafted their debut single ‘Neon Ballroom’. this band echoes similarities with staple indie bands such as wolf alice, whose influence is so engrained in the track’s opening sections, similar to much of wolf alice’s early ep’s.

Lemondaze’s shoegaze anthem feels like you’re intrinsically stuck in an ethereal lucid dream loop consisting only of fuzz pedals & 90’s indie movies – the track is simply cosmic from start to finish with looping guitar lines, calmed fuzz interference and hypnotic harmonies. elements of noise and shoegaze are entwined to present a fresh take on a trend that has been tried and tested so many times before, and by all means, polished by the east anglian 3-piece.

having shared stages with the likes of gengahr, hinds, bloody knees and piroshka, including recommendations from wolf alice, lemondaze are set to be a band to look out for over the next year,

Foundlings are a London / Brighton based band who play melodic, guitar-driven, indie-rock. In support of their debut release – double a-side single, ‘Misery’ / ‘Your Sister’ – the band embarked on their successful first U.K. tour, with performances in London, Brighton, Glasgow, Manchester and Sheffield. ‘Misery’ was selected by Steve Lamacq for his 6Music Recommends playlist and by Tom Robinson for the BBC Introducing Mixtape. The track received nationwide airplay on BBC 6Music, Amazing Radio and various other stations; Lamacq described the band’s sound as, “breathless indie pop.” The tracks have an insistent, guitar-driven energy across which the vocals are lifted, setting the tone somewhere between urban style and sweet nostalgia.

Foundlings’ eponymous debut EP is the band’s first release on Scottish label Last Night From Glasgow.

The lead singer of beloved heartland-punk band The Gaslight Anthem, Brian Fallon steps away from that sound and into a stripped-down Americana space on his third solo album, Local Honey. Produced by Grammy-award winning producer Peter Katis (The National, Frightened Rabbit, Death Cab for Cutie), the album showcases Fallon’s songwriting in small vignettes, from a loving devotional for his daughter to a vengeful murder ballad.

Brian Fallon’s new album ‘Local Honey’ is available on CD and LP. “Every single song is about right now. There’s nothing on this record that has to do with the past or even the future, it just has to do with the moments that are presented and things that I’ve learned and I’m finding in my day to day. This record is 100 percent about the day today. It’s not about these glorious dreams or miserable failures, it’s just about life and how I see it.” – Brian Fallon

I’m thrilled to announce that my third studio album, Local Honey, will be released on March 27th. You can listen to the first track “You Have Stolen My Heart” and preorder the album now. Also, I will once again be joined by the Howling Weather for a tour starting this Spring, and Justin Townes Earle and Worriers will be supporting us on this run.
