  • The Playing Fields are a London based band who released their debut album “Hello New World” on the CactiShed Record label in 2007. The second album “Hungry Ghosts” released in 2012.
Settling on the name The Playing Fields in 2003/4, brothers Stephen & Michael Bland and bassist Jeff Baskett continued to forge a unique sound, dark, intense pieces fixed with beautifully melodious song-writing. In 2005 the band honed their performance skills with many gigs and a succession of drummers. The songs developed in complexity and with a harder rythmic drive. An acoustic version of their song “Valley of Salt” was featured on BBC TV’s Hustle.
Joined by drummer Ron Rosenblum & violinist Hannah Sless, the band recorded their debut LP “Hello New World” at The SickRoom Studios with Owen Turner from Magoo . The album was mastered by Kramer (from Second Shimmy Label/Galaxie 500/Lou Reed/Yo La Tengo fame). In December 2006 the album’s title track featured at number 7 on the Dandelion Radio continuation of the John Peel festive fifty list.
Joined by ex-Brian Jonestown Massacre & current Swervedriver drummer Graham Bonnar, the band then released their follow up LP, titled “Hungry Ghosts” .
Excellently crafted with real passion… Each instrument resonates an ambience that had me fixed,

From the Dead Horse One album “WITHOUT LOVE WE PERISH” Produced by Ride’s Mark Gardener, I previewed Dead Horse One‘s debut album ‘Without Love We Perish’ which came out last April via A Quick One Records. The French quintet formed in 2011 and released their first EP Heavenly Choir Of Jet Engines the following year. Inspired by Ride, The Telescopes and Swervedriver, it’s fitting that Ride‘s Mark Gardener jumped on board to produce the record. Lead single ‘I Love My Man’ is an example of the rock n’ roll swagger you should expect. It’s predominantly a psych rock experience, combined with loveable slacker rock balladry. I had a chance to preview early cuts of the album many months ago, it’s clear that a lot of work has gone into putting this record together and it’s paid off. For fans of The Black Angels, Sleepy Sun and Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Whirr is an American band from San Francisco, California, United States. They formed in 2010, originally as Whirl. The name was created by the original drummer, Sergio Miranda, in the midst of recording the band’s first demos as a nameless project. It was a homage to all the bands of “the Scene That Celebrates Itself” (Lush, Ride, Moose, Medicine, Lilys, etc.). They had to legally change the name after a woman performing acoustic covers of Black Sabbath songs trademarked “Whirl” and threatened a lawsuit.

Whirr’s sound is often compared to My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. Founding guitarist Nick Bassett also played in the band Deafheaven surrounding and including the release of their 2011 album, “Roads to Judah“.

After a self-released demo cassette and the “Distressor” EP, the band signed to Tee Pee Records in 2011. The original vocalist Byanca Munoz left the band because of creative differences, and was soon replaced by Alexandra Morte (Night School, camera shy). They released the June single that year, followed by their 2012 debut album “Pipe Dreams“. The band also released two splits in 2012 with Anne and Monster Movie.

In 2013, the original drummer Sergio Miranda left the band and was replaced by Devin Nunes. Former vocalist Alexandra Morte also left the band and was replaced by Kristina Esfandiari (Miserable, King Woman). The band released a live EP entitled “Part Time Punks Sessions on April 20, 2013. It was a performance recorded in 2012 that featured the band’s previous lineup.

Whirr released the “Around EP” on July 9, 2013, featuring the new vocalist along with session drummer Trevor DeSchryver (Lycus, Dispirit, formerly Deafheaven). They toured to support it that August with the band Nothing. Esfandiari was fired from the band prior to the tour, leaving the band without a female vocalist for the first time.

As a result of touring together, members of Nothing and Whirr formed a / side project called Death of Lovers. Nick Bassett then joined Nothing as a bassist, and has been touring with them ever since. He also started an project with former Whirr vocalist Alexandra Morte called Camera Shy.

Whirr released their cover of Nirvana’s Pennyroyal Tea on the tribute compilation In Utero, in Tribute, in Entirety on April 19, 2014.

The second full-length LP entitled Sway was released on September 23, 2014. It’s the first release with Loren Rivera as the sole vocalist for the band.

On October 7th, Graveface Records released a remastered version of their debut album entitled “Pipe Dreams (Redux)“. The reissue is remastered by Jack Shirley and includes new artwork and the originally-intended tracklisting that the band preferred over the 2012 release.

Ashrae Fax and the video of Dreamers Tied to Chairs,
Ashrae Fax – Never Really Been Into It: This album was written ten years ago and yet it sounds completely modern and fresh. Not “modern” in the sense that so many bands have also incorporated the Cocteau Twins discography (vocal style, guitar effects, padded electronic drums, etc.) into their set over the past few years, but “modern” in that they are the best and closest musical thing since Cocteau Twins were an active band, and that’s a massive achievement.

Whirr, and Portland’s Anne, have similar influences, Whirr is more of a traditional shoegaze band—in the sense of lowly mixed vocals, echoy and reverby guitars—while Anne fall into a category that I suppose I would call dream pop—shimmery guitars, heavy synths.

Both acts have one full-length release to their name, as well as various singles and EPs, and most recently, they collaborated on a split, double 7” single. a split single involves one artist taking the A side, while the other takes the B. In this situation, there are two separate 7” singles—Whirr take the A and B side of the first one, while Anne takes up the first side of the second, and the lyrics to their songs are stamped onto the flip side.

In September it was announced that Run For Cover Records, would be putting out said split 2×7”, with a release date set in October. October came and went, and still no singles. There was some kind of issue with the stamping of the lyrics into the backside of the Anne single, and the production delay lasted until mid-December.
