Every December, the Polish city of Gdansk undergoes a brightly-lit, electronic and reverb-filled transformation from its former drab legacy as a Soviet port to one that clearly demonstrates that this is a city of the future and of the cosmos. The SpaceFest music festival is the key to this sonic makeover, gathering fans of eclectic, spacey, dreamy, and gazey music under one roof for an entire week. Organized by the Nasiono Association, one of the offerings of this annual event is the collective known as Pure Phase Ensemble.

Pure Phase Ensemble is a collaborative music project created especially for SpaceFest and is fashioned in a somewhat revolving-door style, similar to how 4AD’s This Mortal Coil used to operate. In this case, there are two personalities who are permanent members of the project and they are joined by a new set of musicians from Poland each year, plus one invited internationally-recognized musician as a guest director. This person then helps to lead the pack for a solid week of workshops and joint songwriting, culminating in a performance of their creations at the end of SpaceFest.

The permanent members of Pure Phase Ensemble are the two musical directors Ray Dickaty, a British saxophonist improviser and former member of Spiritualized, and Karol Schwarz (KSAS), who also manages Nasiono Records. This past SpaceFest saw Mark Gardener of RIDE, the frontman of celebrated shoegaze pioneers RIDE, assume the role of guest curator.

“For me, this is interesting – it’s perfect because it reminds me in some ways of how some of the early RIDE songs came together… I didn’t come in with a script; nor does Ray. There is no pre-work on this. It was just completely spontaneous,” explains Mark Gardener.

Today we offer you the exclusive premiere of the video for “Morning Rise” by Pure Phase Ensemble 4 feat. Mark Gardener. The track represents Gardener’s first proper shoegaze / space-rock release in over a decade.

The track can be found on Pure Phase Ensemble’s newly-released LP Live at SpaceFest and also on Bandcamp, iTunes and the Nasiono Records website.

We change Ear To Ear records with Raphalite Records (Shauna & Marc) in “REVOLUTION – The Shoegaze Revival” Compilation for some reason. Raphalite Records is a Trans-Atlantic boutique label, based in Wales, UK and Ontario, Canada. Carrying on the tradition of Creation Records and early 4AD, we look beyond the borders that most labels are limited to, uncovering hidden gems and bringing them to the world. We invite you to gaze into our world and dream with us you can listen the compilation, here:

“Revolution – The Shoegaze Revival” is an epic, truly international 30-track compilation comprised of outstanding original material. Such bands have set the stage for shoegaze pioneers’ return to today’s scene by upholding their wall of sound and painting it with breathtaking colour. Some of these bands are also ‘first wave’ but have remained underground, while some are newbies – the ‘second wave’ of shoegaze.

Curated by UK label Raphalite Records and Indonesian label Gerpfast Kolektif, this compilation features 30 bands from 16 countries, covering 5 of the 6 inhabited continents. Each was selected purely on the basis of their dynamic sound, without any consideration of geographic preference, label affiliation, popularity ranking or hype. Without even one throwaway or filler track, these are all ‘keepers’.

This is not a shoegaze tribute album to MBV or Slowdive, or even The Beatles. There is simply so much greatness to the new wave of shoegaze that we’re focusing on original tracks, which showcase the immense talent of the featured bands. For some, this album may be the best shoegaze soundtrack they’ll encounter in 2015. At minimum, this will serve as a fantastic introduction to these new sounds and happily tide existing shoegaze fans over for quite some time.

Creation Records co-founder Joe Foster (also noted for producing My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream, and Jesus & Mary Chain) is also throwing his support behing this initiative, stating “This is a new comp with the best of the world shoegaze/magical psychpoppy’s REBIRTH…. Why do I refer to rebirth instead of revival? In contrast, a *rebirth* in the same period gave us such bands as The Cramps, Primal Scream and Cocteau Twins – what a range!! And such a huge and wide world of music…this is exactly what is happening again in a new and unexpected way! 30 bands from 16 countries worldwide…an unprecedented spread of hope and art”.

Members of Swervedriver, Slowdive, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Swallow [4AD], Strata Florida [Saint Marie Records] and The Telescopes [Creation Records] have also expressed their support, as well as renowned British producer Fran Ashcroft (Damon Albarn, Lords of Acid). We are hopeful that this compilation will help move this genre beyond being “The Scene That Celebrates Itself” to one that is also celebrated by others…

releases 10th September 2015

Released by both Raphalite Records (UK) and Gerpfast Kolektif (Indonesia). Curated by Shauna McLarnon and Marc Joy for Raphalite Records, as well as Aditya Pandu Wijaya (Pandu) and Mochamad Romadhon Febriarianto (Ari) for Gerpfast Kolektif.

Malka, are a band out of NYC, their press release does a much better job than me of explaining what you are about to listen to.  Malka are a band laying down some sweet psychedelic dreampop….

psych dream-gazers MALKA debut EP The Constant State

New York City-based psychedelic dreampop band MALKA present their debut EP, The Constant State. Recorded at both APT Studio (NYC) and Elohino studio (NJ), mixed by Darko Saric, and mastered at 825 Studios by Grammy Award-winning engineer Butch Jones (Madonna, Talking Heads, Iggy Pop, The Gun Club, B-52s), The Constant State takes listeners on a genre-melding journey, ebbing and flowing through the realms of dreampop, post-rock, nugaze, and psychedelic rock.

The songs are evocative both musically and lyrically, touching on metaphysical, existential and interpersonal subject matter with an honesty that resonates to an emotional core. Their music is a reflection of the triumph and tragedy of the world, compelling us to look deeper into the realms of our consciousness. Malka is trying to stretch the concept of songs to make them sound more like emotional lapses of time.

Lightning Bug started out as a group of best friends. When you hang out that much, I guess you just start making things together. We made music with no real ambition to share it with people, but found ourselves with enough songs for a full-length album. So we self-released “Floaters” at the end of January 2015 and now, we’re here, playing shows, making more music. Still friends, but also a band.

This documentary feature the band  Slowdive offers an oral history of the classic shoegaze album “Souvlaki”, with intimate interviews examining the stories behind this modern classic.  This episode tells the story of Slowdive‘s 1993 magnum opus “Souvlaki“. their ability to make uncomplicated yet beautiful soundscapes, impressionistic, emotional songs reminiscent of a Turner painting rendered in audio, While the guitars of My Bloody Valentine roared, Slowdive made theirs sing.  “Souvlaki”,  was their definitive album. Though I don’t think of every track as perfect, the truly great songs on this album make it a classic. “Alison” is a gorgeous start, languorous and atmospheric. “40 Days” is even better, with a simple but stunning guitar line that is simply transcendent, and Neil Halstead’s vocal seems deadpan on the surface but strikes me as full of emotion. Above all, the peak moments could very well be the brilliant “Souvlaki Space Station” and “When The Sun Hits”. Both are absolute masterpieces. In the former, Rachel’s vocals are somewhere between waking and dreaming, and are more another instrument than anything else, complementing the washes of guitars perfectly.

Souvlaki was released on May 17, 1993 in the UK and on February 8, 1994 in the U.S. Widely regarded as their best album, it benefits from synthesizer contributions from co-producer Brian Eno on Sing (which he co-wrote) and Here She Comes . The album’s U.S. release includes the previously unreleased cover of Some Velvet Morning (written by Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra in 1967) and three tracks from the band’s 1993 5 EP, all of which feature on a reissued edition availble at Amazon.

The film follows the band as they come up in the flourishing Thames Valley shoegaze scene and chronicles the making of the album. It features interviews with all of the band members as well as Creation Records’ Alan McGee, producer Chris Hufford, and engineer Ed Buller.

Mexican shoegaze band Car Crash Sisters on the excellent Ride covers compilation released by The Blog That Celebrates Itself, Leave Them All Behind. That cover drew me to their new EP, The Crystal Garden, which dropped in early May and is available on their Bandcamp page. The EP runs the gamut of the band’s influences and ranges from smashing shoegaze to dreamy musical sequences. The band’s two married guitarists, Kique and Alma, agreed to answer some questions about the band’s past history and the recording of their new EP.

With your grand cover of Ride’s “Here and Now”. How big an influence is Ride, and would you also count Swervedriver as a big influence? Because some of the songs on your new EP, like “All My Friends” and “Automatic”, seem like Adam Franklin snuck into your studio.
