The rumble and roar of the road. The dangers of addiction. The pack mentality that comes with crisscrossing the country alongside your best friends on tour. All four were on BJ Barham’s mind when he wrote “Wolves,” the title track to American Aquarium’s newest album. Rooted in the brawny, barroom country-rock of fellow road warriors like Lucero and Drive-By Truckers — whose most famous alum, Jason Isbell, produced American Aquarium’s “Burn.Flicker.Die”. in 2012 — Wolves is a rallying cry from a band that’s spent the bulk of the past nine years onstage, hunting for their big break. It’s music for dive bars and pools halls, for late-night drives and early morning hangovers. Barham, who played with more than 20 different bandmates before nailing down American Aquarium’s current lineup, calls it “the sound of a band that’s firing on all cylinders.

Kiran Leonard performing ‘A Purpose’ for Super Smash Hit Sessions. Kiran Leonard is a singer-songwriter from near Manchester, but another kid busker with a soulful voice he ain’t. Record companies searching for the next Ed Sheeran can probably look away now . One of the tracks on his album, “Bowler Hat Soup” – which isn’t even his debut, despite the fact he’s only 17 – sounds like a hardcore band playing a show tune. Others remind us of Ariel Pink in a tussle with Aphex Twin,  Needless to say, Leonard is more Frank Zappa . “Bowler Hat Soup” includes 16 tracks and features Leonard playing everything bar a swordfish trombone, from the usual piano and guitar to a grill. There are as many ideas as there are instruments , his press release contains more ideas than most records by people twice his age. He describes his album as “a hexadecagonal pseudo-fortress of occasionally caustic and semi-illiterate pop nonsense” and, employing a decidedly regal third-person, “suspects the whole thing is a little schizophrenic and relentless” while tacitly acknowledging the benefits of such qualities. He is “a firm believer in the exponential curve that connects the power and excellence of a show with its number of drummers” and “claims his music is capable of causing uncontrollable bouts of hysteria”.

You might as well love this band for the heart-on-sleeve sincerity alone. They play hammering guitar music that oozes class. Think early Soul Asylum, later Replacements and Bob Mould, in general. Freak Wave is a Melbourne band, featuring members of Kill Whitey, A Death In The Family, MYC, Blueline Medic. Debut 12″ EP out now on Poison City Records.

Just put up a free single which I worked on with Harry Fraud (Rick Ross) last month. It was written for a commercial about gold teeth and pirate life, so naturally I said “hell yes”.

The inimitable King Tuff, or Tuffy to his mates, certainly managed to turn a few heads with this, his fourth album and second on Sub Pop Records. this is an amazing video, The “Black Moon Spell” likes to dance in slithering circles around your skull. Look at it revolving like a wicked little layer cake on your drooling tongue. My best advice would be to kiss it, make hot love to it, get dizzy with it. The “Black Moon Spell” is a very good lover.

REVERE  is a seven-piece band combining orchestral instruments with rock staples that broke through in 2010 with a self-released debut album, ” Hey! Selim “, a record packed with epic tunes including the astonishing “The Escape Artist.”

After some changes in line-up the London-based band followed up this spring with the U.K. release of “My Mirror/Your Target”. The album sidesteps close comparison with its forerunner by focusing on shorter songs, many with a rockier edge to them, and allowing more space between instruments rather than building walls of sound, evidenced by the majestic balladry of “A Road From The Flood.”

Oella’s latest release, “City Don’t Show,” was entirely written by Oella band members and was released October  2014. Band member Luke Edwards designed the cover art for “City Don’t Show.” VisitOellaec.bandcamp.com for more information.

clearlight

Clear Light were a Prime Example of L.A./West Coast psychedelia containing virtually everything one could want in an album from that time period. I still get goose bumps just thinking about this one. Possibly second-tier but decidedly not second-rate. An antidote to those burnt out on the Doors.

In 1966, The band Brain Train formed and was managed by Sunset Strip hipster Bud Mathis. They recorded one single – “Black Roses”,written by Wolfe Dios – before changing their name to Clear Light and signing to Elektra Records. The Doors producer Paul A. Rothchild took over management of the band.

The core members of Clear Light were Bob Seal, lead guitarist and vocals, Robbie “The Werewolf” Robison, rhythm guitar and vocals, Doug Lubahn bass and vocals, Dallas Taylor drums, and Michael Ney on, unusually, another set of drums.  The original line-up was featured in the 1967 motion picture The President’s Analyst, with Barry McGuire cast as their leader and vocalist  They soon added Cliff De Young on lead vocals  this version of the band seen on their only album cover. However, sometime during the recording process, often described as “brutal”, Paul Rothchild was not happy with Robison’s guitar playing skills and pressured the group to remove him- he was replaced by keyboard player Ralph Schuckett.

A notable track from the Clear Light album, was “Mr. Blue,” a psychedelic version of a folk song written by Tom Paxton and a popular request on underground radio at the time. Lasting over six minutes, the rather sinister, psychedelic song is considered a classic of the genre. Its lyrics, which alternate between spoken word and song, include verses opening with such lines as, “Good morning, Mister Blue, we’ve got our eye on you,” “Step softly, Mister Blue, we know what’s best for you,” and “Be careful, Mister Blue, this phase you’re going through ..

The album also included a reworked version of “Black Roses”, released as a single, and some of guitarist Bob Seal’s psychedelic folk-rock songs, namely “With All in Mind” and “They Who Have Nothing.” It had some success in England, but was largely ignored in the U.S, After having started work on a second album the group disbanded in 1968. Two tracks from the sessions for the second album surfaced in 2006, “Darkness of Day” and “What a Difference Love Makes”; the latter showed the group moving into more commercial territory due to Kortchmar’s influence.
