The seekers in New York City’s Psychic Ills have spent more than a decade following their muse wherever it takes them. Inner Journey Out, the band’s highly anticipated fifth album and first since 2013, is the culmination of an odyssey of three years of writing, traversing the psych-rock landscape they’ve carved throughout their career and taking inspired pilgrimages into country, blues, gospel, and jazz.

When it comes to following the beat of their own drum, New York’s Psychic Ills have exemplified the phrase since their beginnings in 2003. Initially spawned from electronic-centered home recording experiments, they progressed into all-night full-band exploration in a neighborhood where noise wasn’t a problem

Milk ‘N’ Cookies are the stuff of legends — or would be legends. Forming in the early 1970s in Long Island, New York, this Power Pop group was originally signed to Island Records and seemed destined for greatness. Yet, through many cases of “right place, wrong time,” the band never managed to break. The core line-up of the band was made up of Ian North, Justin Strauss, Sal Maida and Mike Ruiz and, in their time, they played classic NYC venues like CBGB’s and Max’s Kansas City. They shared bills with everyone from Talking Heads to The Ramones and have amassed a cult following, influencing the likes of Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and Debbie Harry (Blondie).

After working extensively with the band members, Milk ‘N’ Cookies is a lavish reissue of the group’s entire recorded output. Housed in a deluxe slipcase is the band’s original legendary LP, a 2xLP featuring rare and unreleased tracks, as well as a book that chronicles the full history of the band’s wild ride through the music biz—as told by the band themselves, through accounts from their many (in)famous admirers (Sonic Youth, Talking Heads, the Ramones) and through never-before-seen photographs. “Get out your Tinkertoys once again as we’re happily blessed with this new Milk ‘N’ Cookies package.

Jordan Lee’s work as Mutual Benefit has been nothing short of impeccably intimate thus far, and tastes of his forthcoming full-length suggest no such deviation from this path.  “the hereafter” closes out skip a sinking stone, out may 20th via Mom+Pop Records, replete with bucolic counterpoint that eventually coalesces into an ornately orchestrated outing.  staying constant amidst the evolving textures is Lee’s vocal, ever-soothing as he tentatively stretches into his upper register and resounding as he ventures back down to deliver the song’s central thesis.  get lost in “the hereafter”

WALL – ” Cuban Cigars”

WALL is one of the year’s most talked-about new bands, a New York four-piece with a tough sound that calls to mind the best early 80s no wave. NME described Cuban Cigars as “their breakout-hit so far – a strident cock-of-the-walk post-punker.” Who better than legendary photographer and transgressive filmmaker Richard Kern to direct the band’s debut video? A central figure during New York’s original no wave movement, Kern has worked with Lydia Lynch and Sonic Youth, among others. The band and director were brought together by Super Deluxe, a digital channel that makes short videos, original series and animation.

Cuban Cigars is the first music video produced by Super Deluxe as part of their nefarious plan to bring culture that deserves attention to the surface.WALL’s official statement on the song goes something like this: “‘Cuban Cigars’ was recorded in a concrete box in the dead of winter and inspired by the boxes in Manhattan where rich men go to smoke cigars and wash their money. Filtering The B-52’s through minimal composition, WALL created this song based on patterns rather than melody.”

Friday night, Hall and Oates gave a spectacular comeback show to a sold-out Madison Square Garden that NYC will never forget!

Opening act Mayer Hawthorne opened the show while Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings tore down the stage performing jam after jam including her hit ‘100 Days 100 Nights’. She set the tone for an awesome night with an emphatically energetic performance and braced us for the ultimate headliners.

Daryl Hall and John Oates wowed the crowd breezing through countless hits without missing a single horn, snare or beat. Soul music and live instruments were on the menu as fans sang in unison to arguably one of the greatest groups ever. As one of the best-selling duos of all time, Hall and Oates bridged the gap between music fans of all generations. The crowd stayed on their feet as the duo and their extraordinary band played through their impressive setlist including fan favorites ‘Sara Smile’, ‘Maneater’, ‘Rich Girl’ and their smash hit 80’s single from the album Private Eyes, ‘I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)’

The entire night proved to be one long jam session but personal enough that the audience felt like they were upstate at Hall’s infamous, ‘Live From Daryl’s House with Daryl Hall’. A must see concert we’ve been waiting for, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings will be joining Hall & Oates on tour this summer.  Hopefully they will come to the UK . You don’t want to miss this!

It’s been over four years since the last full-length record from Sons Of An Illustrious Father. Since then the group have put out a handful of songs to tide us over. “Loveletting,” off the Sons EP that came out a little over a year ago is a great tune, and a good indicator of what was to come.

The transition to a three-piece seems to have occurred rather easily for Sons. They share singing responsibilities equally, which allows everyone to shine in their own way. The biggest shocker on Revol is how big they sound this time around. If you’ve been listening to them since their first record from 2009, you won’t find much of that band here. Guitars are turned up, the drums are splattered all over, and the vocals are clean and up front. It’s a totally different sound, but it does retain the honesty and passion we’ve come to love from them.

Josh Aubin seems to receive the biggest benefit here. Ezra Miller has his fanbase and Lilah Larson has blown us away time and again. But on Revol, Aubin gets a lot of mileage out of his keyboard and his voice is featured plenty. His voice doesn’t invoke the kind of pain and yearning that Larson and Miller articulate so well, but he gets his message across without having to be fancy about it.

On “Post-Future,” which was released as a single last week, Aubin sings about the disconnection in humanity caused by technology. “You can find reason wherever you want it to be, but is finding an answer gonna set you free?”

“Opposite Of Love” is a pretty traditional blues number that allows Lilah the opportunity to showcase her powerhouse voice a little bit. She has a little more Fiona Apple in her voice than I ever noticed before, and some of the raw ferocity gives way to a new confidence and polish. “There is no opposite of love” she sings over and over, her words getting louder and louder before she lets loose with a wail that will send shivers down your spine.

I hope Revol is the album that pushes Sons to the next level, if for no other selfish reason The new album, Revol, available worldwide on March 4th 2016

AUGUSTINES – ” We Are Alive “

Augustines come thundering out of the traps with a real fiery banger of a track in ‘Are We Alive’, their forthcoming single to be released on April 1st.
This is the first taste from the New York-based alt-rockers’ third full-length which will follow later this year, and shows the trio – guitarist Billy McCarthy, multi-instrumentalist Eric Sanderson and drummer Rob Allen – have lost none of their passion in delivering honest-to-goodness high calibre songs.

The band released their debut album, ‘Rise Ye Sunken Ships’, back in 2011, followed by their self-titled sophomore in 2014.
Augustines have also announced they will be joining Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds on tour in Europe in April, before heading to the UK for two headline shows, at London’s Electric Ballroom on April 19, and Academy 2, Manchester the following night.

Cuban Cigars is the first single from WALL’s self titled 7″ EP out on Wharf Cat Records

They’ve often been compared to 80s alt godheads and REM-influencers Pylon – one comparison they seem to actively enjoy. Naturally, The Bush Tetras and ESG always crack a mention. But while the no wave tag is there in Gomez’ blank-eyed marching rhythms, Skadden’s loping bass, and the squeal-of-brakes whine of Vince’s guitar, there’s also a melodic force to their songs that only comes through with repeated listens.

Take, for instance, ‘Milk’ – from their forthcoming self-titled EP – where York’s playful surrealism takes things in a direction that most of the no wave’s deadening non-sequiturs wouldn’t dare. “The sky opened up / milk poured out / They say that is the way,” she deadpans, as the song decelerates into its gawping chorus with the tuneful efficiency of Jefferson Airplane transforming like Optimus Prime into Jefferson Smart Bomb.

‘Cuban Cigars’ is their breakout-hit so far – a strident cock-of-the-walk post-punker that alternates York’s sly whimsy: “Fresh baked bread keeps the pigs well fed”, with Skadden squawking “suited up, playing rough, walking in and talking tough” and ends abruptly with everyone coughing like they’ve all choked a fistful of Cuban Leaf down the wrong way.

If there are two poles which drive WALL’s sound, then it’s the bass-vs-guitars face-off of Skadden-McClelland, whose musical histories are pretty opposite.

Skadden’s mom was a hippy who brought the avant-garde likes of Laurie Anderson and Devo into the home from a young age, to the extent that her taste has consolidated around the scratchy, challenging, atonal end of the spectrum. “Honestly, something is wrong with my ear. I can’t listen to something like The Cars or The Clash, and think it sounds good, I just can’t do it.” Skadden was previously of Finally Punk, the Austin, Texas punk luminaries who styled themselves as ‘No Rules’, swapping instruments in-between their one-minute songs. “I enjoyed Finally Punk so much that I didn’t believe I could ever find something that even came close,” she says.

Working with Vince has been different. “I’ve played with other guys before Vince, but honestly never liked it. I find men are quite limiting in a band context. Women, in my experience, are more open to sharing. Vince has a willingness to experiment that’s amazing. I think of him as my own personal Eric Erlandson: stoic, patient, talented. Et cetera.”

On the other side of the spectrum, Vince’s previous act was the cute, pin-neat 60s pop of The Keepsies. “I became obsessed with this book, Songwriting Secrets of the Beatles,” he says. “I would write songs based on different chapters of the book.” The Keepsies is still a recording project, he adds, co-owned with Austin Brown of Parquet Courts. Vince was an early drummer in semi-legendary Austin indie act Ringo Deathstarr too. “Elizabeth works like a focusing element,” he explains. “I noodle over all of our songs, and she picks what she likes. I have a terrible memory, so she’s good at stopping me and saying, “Wait, play that again.”

WALL’s rhythmic tumble-dryer is all the more remarkable given that Gomez was an utter drumming novice when she arrived. “I’ve just always connected the most to the drums when listening to music,” Gomez explains. “I always mentally imagined myself doing it. Riot grrrrl made me believe I could. So… I’m so glad that I finally pursued it like fucking 15 years later.”

Years ago, a friend gave her their drum kit for free. “And then more recently a few friends gave me a few lessons, but being in a band is what really helped me learn.” She grins. “I’m lucky to have bandmates who are so patient…”

For her part, York grew up listening to “a mix of terrible indie bands from the mid-2000’s mixed with weird Zolo and a whole slew of 80’s jams that I discovered via Elizabeth. We’ve known each other for nearly 20 years and lived together as youngsters.” Two of the videos she most remembers watching on repeat together were ‘Bostich’ by Yello and Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’ – about as far at either end of the palette as you could get. “I think something that has helped our friendship together for so many years is that nothing in our lives has ever been normal…”

New York band WALL serve up ‘Cuban Cigars’ | DIY

One of New York’s most hyped new bands return with a Devo sting in their tail today.

Vince McClelland’s guitar is orchestral and piercing throughout, while Sam York, singer with any real songs behind her this decade, spits and instructs her way through 100 seconds of intensity.

While there are a bunch of bands from elsewhere in the States making similar music right now – Coneheads from North West Indiana, perhaps – but none of them are really courting the mainstream the way Wall are. Here are a band, you feel, who actually want to be big, want to tour, want to get into a proper studio and see how it fucks with their shit. Bring on that date, I say. See Wearewall.com for more on Wall. ‘Last Date’ is the final track on the fourpiece’s debut EP which is out on January 15th on Wharf Cat Records. It was produced by Austin Brown from Parquet Courts.
