Sometimes the “anticipation of loss” is just as crippling as loss itself. LOSE confronts that anxiety head-on, with striking resiliency. But it also explores “loss” from the opposite angle, as D’Agostino mourns his youth, his innocence—and his best friend and former bandmate, Ben High, who died suddenly from a heart-related condition in 2007.
After Lenses Alien, Cymbals Eat Guitars almost seemed destined to be stuck in ’00s buzz band semi-obscurity. This was no fault of the band’s own; sometimes great bands get lost in the ether due to their own consistency or because more headline-grabbing acts overtake the spotlight. With the band’s emphatic peak, LOSE, it’s now impossible to overlook D’Agostino and his bandmates. Channeling profound loss, once-buried emotions, and a stronger sense of songwriting, these Staten Islanders have created something cathartic, life-affirming, and important.

TALKING HEADS – ” The Music of David Byrne & Talking Heads” Carnegie Hall NYC March 23rd 2015
Posted: December 23, 2014 in MUSICTags: Carnegie Hall, David Byrne, New York City, Talking Heads
Carnegie Hall will host “The Music of David Byrne & Talking Heads” on March 23rd. The performing artists will be announced at a later date. The show will serve as a benefit for music education programs serving underprivileged youth put on by Michael Dorf. Past tribute shows have included the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, R.E.M., Paul Simon and Prince.
Each year, impresario Michael Dorf puts together an eclectic and well-rounded lineup of performers to pay tribute to a legend at New York City’s historic Carnegie Hall. We’re very excited to see that Carnegie Hall has announced the 2015 installment will pay tribute to The Music Of David Byrne & Talking Heads. If past announcements are any guide look for the initial list of performers to drop early in January. Proceeds will benefit music education programs serving underprivileged youth.
There are so many possibilities for this concert. We’d love to see The Roots tackle “Life During Wartime,” Phish welcomed to switch it up by covering “Burning Down The House” (last played at Vernon Downs in 1998), The Wood Brothers perform “Heaven,” Aaron Neville on “Take Me To The River,” Felice Brothers shake up “Girlfriend Is Better” or Patti Smith sing “Heaven.” We can’t wait to see what Dorf has in store.
PARQUET COURTS – ” Ducking and Dodging ” Live on the World Café
Posted: December 22, 2014 in MUSICTags: New York City, Parquet Courts, Sunbathing Animal
Parquet Courts walk onstage and introduce themselves. First song “Ducking and Diving” from their new album, Sunbathing Animal, sounds like Devo, minus the funny red hats, with climactic guitars dividing the track’s underlying repetitive bass and intensive lyrical attack. Gliding into another track from the same album with great ease and bags of charisma, the brilliantly versatile style of singing from Andrew Savage and Austin Brown sounds powerful.
Next are two tracks from their second studio album Light Up Gold; Master Of My Craft and Borrowed Time – it’s entertaining and insightful for diehard fans that they’re played in the order they are placed on the record. The distortion intensifies and the crowd go into complete overdrive as the band show they are masters of their own craft by singing and performing with overwhelming energy and talent. Their breathtaking appeal doesn’t end at the end of these two enigmatic and addictively insane songs, they go on to play mainly from their new album, which is arguably their best yet.

PATTI SMITH – ” Dreaming Of The Prophet ” Live Broadcast 27th December 1975
Posted: December 11, 2014 in CLASSIC ALBUMS, MUSICTags: Amazon, Horses, Live, New York City, Patti Smith, The Bottom Line
This engrossing live broadcast captures Patti Smith at a pivotal moment in her career. Her stunningly original debut, ‘Horses’, had been released just a few weeks earlier. Although the record has since become a landmark release, and widely cited as one of Rock music’s greatest albums, at the time Patti Smith was still performing in small clubs such as New York City’s 400-capacity Bottom Line, located at 15, West Fourth Street, and venue for this very gig. One of a string of seven sell-out performances Smith gave at this legendary Greenwich Village club in December 1975, they were intended as warm-ups for her first major tour of the USA, planned to begin in early 1976. In 1975 the group expanded to include second guitarist Ivan Kral and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty. The Patti Smith Group was signed to Arista Records by label supremo Clive Davis, allegedly on a recommendation from Lou Reed. Another ex-Velvet, John Cale, was bought in to produce ‘Horses’ at New York’s Electric Ladyland Studios. The sessions began in August 1975 and were completed the following month. Despite the records release being just a few months prior to this gig, the set features an eclectic mixture of material, opening with some quite extraordinary poetry recitals. From ‘Horses’ versions of Redono Beach, Free Money, Birdland and a medley of Land and Patti’s interpretation of Van Morrisons Gloria are included. Gloria was also issued as a single in 1976 together with a live version of The Who’s My Generation, a number that also closes this performance. The set also features two songs that would feature on 1976’s ‘Radio Ethiopia’, Ain’t It Strange and Pumping My Heart. Looking further ahead, both Privilege (Set Me Free) and Space Monkey remained unreleased until 1978’s ‘Easter’. There are also acknowledgements of Patti’s disparate musical influences in the shape of covers of the Velvets Pale Blue Eyes, Time Is On My Side, written by Jerry Ragovoy but immortalized by The Rolling Stones, and the perennial garage band classic Louie Louie. This is available through Amazon now.
PORCHES – ” Ronald Paris House “

Porches. has been one of the most amusing acts to come out of the Brooklyn, NY music scene over the past couple of years. The quintet, fronted by prolific multi-instrumentalist Aaron Maine, makes what is generally considered to be “sad rock,” ,
Playing around with the bewildering contradictions in its persona, the band has slotted its music into a variety of absurd, made-up genres, such as “sad spread,” “porno-gospel,” and “bootyclapping.” Porches. has finally settled on “bummer pop” Weirdly paradoxical as the description may be, “bummer pop” is the best way to characterize the breezy music from the group’s Maine’s confident, wry loner lyricism provides the through-line for the disc’s pleasing odyssey of eclectic and poppy sounds

Sunflower Bean is a New York-based trio of young psychedelic rockers. Comprised of Julia Cumming (vox/bass), Nick Kivlen (vox/guitar), and Jacob Faber (drums), they are quickly making a name for themselves as a band to watch — especially at this year’s CMJ Music Marathon. Riffy, groovy, and heavy, they’ve got the right blend of lo-fi Sabbath vibes to keep the party going.
