London three-piece Doe spit fire with words. On their debut full-length each song packs a punch with snarky lyrics and heated vibes, delivered with feeling by vocalist Nicola Leel. “Some Things Last Longer Than You” is intense and insanely hooky with each track evoking volumes of emotion from sinister to personal to raw.

Doe is particularly interesting due to their lack of a bass player. But with the efforts of Leeds producer Matthew Johnson (Hookworms) intensifying Doe’s sound, you can’t even tell the bass doesn’t exist. Doe has made it very prevalent on Some Things Last Longer Than You that they are A-OK. One of the standout things about this record is the constant dueling of male and female vocals being a huge focal point, making for delicious harmonies.

Doe is Nicola Leel, Jake Popyura and Dean Smitten. The trio formed in early 2013 when Leel and Popyura met through an ad and bonded over a mutual love of horror flicks. Since then, Doe has been pumping out infectious indie rock sprinkled with punk. The band pulls from artists like Sleater-Kinney, Weezer and The Breeders with crunching guitars and pounding drums.

Some Things Last Longer Than You is mean. It’s perfect for when you’re feeling extra angsty and want that feeling of satisfaction and a little vengeance so elegantly lined with punk-tinged indie pop. The record begins with “No. 1” which is not only clever, but also incredibly catchy. Who doesn’t like a song about not taking shit from anyone? . “Monopoly” gives off Los Campesinos! vibes throughout its chorus, with buzzy guitars and catchy riffs. It’s a pop tune that is super pissed off. You can hear Nicola executing lyrics about having to bite your tongue until the chorus comes about with its total release and emotional explosion.

“Sincere” features back and forth vocals between Nicola and Jake make such a great contrast, evoking the confrontation that is happening throughout. The end of the track is just so solid with “sincere” being screamed repeatedly, trying to get its point across to the listener. “Turn Around” features distorted guitars balanced with vocal back and forth play, making for really good pop garage punk tunes. The harmonies on this record are so juicy.

Some Things Last Longer Than You is confrontational, exposing a look inside the personal thoughts in someone’s head. The closing track “Something To Tell You” is sung as a confessional about self-doubt and mixed emotions how to be a good person. It’s got nasty screeching guitars that have lyrics to match, making it feel extra raw.

MARINE – ” Rapunzel “

London quartet Marine are set to head out today on what they’ve dubbed the Storybook Tour, a collection of live dates many of which are set to take place in book shops and comic stores around the country. To celebrate the occasion, the band have also shared the video for new single Rapunzel, the visuals to which are inspired by “Elvis Presley, the Spice Girls and Bulgarian folk dance.”

Marine describe themselves as, “‘Fable Electric’, a genre all their own, combining their fascination of the underworld, Seal demons, mighty Kraken, werewolves, witches and gods…. even questioning the very nature of storytelling itself.” Which is all very confusing sounding, but thankfully the aural experience is less complex, there are nods to the folkier end of Warpaint’s output, or a more rural take on PINS bewitching, girl gang harmonies. We’re not entirely they’re not trying to recruit everyone into some sort of cult/occult, but if it sounds this good, we might not take much persuading.

A story about liberating yourself from repetition! Our little homage to magic, independence, and the original story of Rapunzel who started her life as a humble enchanted lettuce…

GOAT GIRL – ” Country Sleaze “

Goat Girl - Country Sleaze

On the London group’s debut single, every jab of noise feels like a stab in the neck, every lyric packed with venomous undertones. With every slimy, charged-up chug of guitars, Goat Girl sound closer to the ugly truth. New track ’Country Sleaze’ is one half of a debut single on Rough Trade. The other half is titled ‘Scum’, for those unsure whether or not this London four-piece like to bathe in the gutter.

Produced by Margo Broom, ‘Country Sleaze’ trades slime for gold. The deeper and darker Goat Girl go, the more exciting this first step sounds. Drum parts are defiantly tinny, guitars dragged across the ground looking for scraps. “I am disgusted and ashamed of this so-called human race,” they bark, staggering between lines like a politician six pints deep in a Westminster local. It’s early days, but Goat Girl are already alive and kicking.

Goat Girl’s debut double a-side single “Country Sleaze” / “Scum” is out 7th October on Rough Trade Records.

When London newcomer Nilüfer Yanya dropped her debut single “Small Crimes” via the respectable Blue Flower Records label back in August, we collectively said “holy shit this is brilliant”.  With echoes of Daughter within the sound of just electric guitar and vocal. Im sure we shall hear more very soon. Are you ready to fall in love? 21-year-old London singer-songwriter Nilüfer Yanya has completely and utterly captivated me with her first single “Small Crimes.” Backed by wisps of electric guitar and very little else, listen as Yanya’s distinctive, soul-laced words dance and sway with enviable ease, giving way to one of the most hypnotic debuts of the year so far.

London-based psych-folk outfit THE HANGING STARS are a loose collective of people who weave together a blissed-out psychedelic tapestry. They released their much anticipated debut album ‘Over The Silvery Lake’ in March 2016 which was described as “a rare deep cut from the late 60s/early 70s boom of psychedelia infused Americana”

Blending folk pastoralism with muddy 60s Americana, they sound like the missing link between the California desert and the grey skyline of London Town. Regarding their sound, the band hope that people can hear “both the sand and the rain”, but hopefully they’ll summon a little of the Californian sun and cosmic country.

The latest Tipping Point Records release by Bryde is already creating waves, taking thrilling dynamic cues from PJ Harvey’s early output, Bryde’s latest single ‘Honey’ is a hard hitting sonic assault which sees the London artist turn up the electric guitars.

It bears the indelible stamp of Bill Ryder-Jones who takes production duties. The outcome is an intensely gratifying salvo of unabashed attitude, replete with lyrics that wouldn’t be out of place in a Courtney Barnett song: “you’re like a bad word, I think I misheard”.

Since setting out as Bryde, Sarah Howells has proven herself to be one of the most singular vocalists and songwriters in todays music scene . After a great set at this years Green Man festival. She’s a powerful projectionist with a tonal range that will likely see her drawing comparisons with her international axe-wielding peers Angel Olsen, Mitski and St Vincent.

Praise for the Welsh songwriter has been bestowed from bloggers like, Earmilk, Nylon, 6Music andRadio 1.

‘Honey’ is available on all streaming services now and is the first part of an EP to be released in November via Tipping Point Records..

London-based band Dream Wife are calling time in the horror movie tropes that drive you crazy. You know the drill, an innocent teenage girl gets chased and tormented by a scary old man until she is saved by another, more heroic man. For the video for new single “Lolita,” the trio, Rakel Mjöll, Alice Go, and Bella Podpadec, decided to flip some of those well-worn ideas on their head.

Using a found footage aesthetic directors Sam Boullier and Eleanor Hardwick create a series of shots that capture the band being both good and the bad, the villains and the victims. The video satirizes the archetype of the female horror victim throughout, while also nodding to horror classics like The Shining.

“The idea for the video came from a distaste toward the classic virginal female victim narrative, the damsel in distress scenario,”. “The intention was to make something both playful and angry, toying with many conventional horror movie moments in an unconventional, empowering, silly and scary way.”

Check out the video, Dream Wife tour the U.K. throughout October alongside Black Honey.

The Big Moon

“This all feels a bit like therapy but a lot less private as it will be going on the Internet.” Juliette Jackson confesses. Through the maze of tunnels that is the backstage area of the Brighton Dome and Corn Exchange, past the numerous Grime crews and frantic tour managers, The Big Moon sit in their tiny dressing room looking cool as cucumbers. The all-female indie four-piece from London are storming onto the scene in some fashion. The hype behind the band is rapidly growing and there is good reason for that. They are yet to release an album but recent single ‘Cupid’ is huge. It’s had plenty of airplay on various radio stations, a vinyl release and is one of the best songs you’ll hear this year.

“Before I was doing this I was a waitress” Juliette explains, “its what I’d been doing forever so even the bad days are so much better then serving people burgers and chips.” The band life is something she is clearly relishing. You can hear it in the music and feel it when they play live. The Big Moon simply love making music. As well as their music being incredible as a live act there are few acts without an album and years of experience, which can top them. They’re the sort of support act that out shines whoever the headline act is. They are going to go far.
