Serfs Up! April 19th

I suppose it was almost exactly two years ago that myself and what was left of this band exiled ourselves to Sheffield in search of yet another renaissance, with only our unshakable dedication to the struggle and a copy of The Commodores ‘Nightshift’ to pull us through. Most Londoners never have and never will fully understand the true horrors of a northern winter, what that much grey sky can do to the human heart. We baptised ourselves again and again in her bitter drizzle, feeding on the monotony of it all as if it were the nectar of the elect. And by the side of a rotten canal in a room half the size of a public toilet, armed with a limited equipment budget, our wits and time, we once again set upon revealing the true face of God, measuring out his/her/their glorious countenance in rhyme, meter, groove and melody.

It is with deep and terrible glee therefore that i can at long last announce the arrival of our 3rd full confession ‘Serfs Up!’ on April 19th of this very year. The first single ‘Feet’ marks our re-entry and is featured below,

The Proper Ornaments have been through a lot together. Essentially hinging on the friendship between James Hoare (also of Ultimate Painting/Veronica Falls) and Max Claps (Toy), the pair’s second album was largely an escape from drug issues and mental health problems.

Emerging from this, subsequent sessions took on a brighter, more upbeat hue, with a gentle, uplifting energy permeating their music. New album ‘6 Lenins’ is the result. Out on April 5th via Tapete Records, it was recorded at James‘ flat on a newly installed 16 track Studer machine.

“We started writing new songs in the summer. I was in bed recovering from hepatitis and very broken and tired so couldn’t do anything else apart from playing guitar,” says Max, “and the songs slowly started to appear. In August we realised we had five new songs each and free time, so we decided to record them. The actual recording only took two weeks and it was considerably easier than our previous recordings.”

Stripped from the LP, ‘Song For John Lennon’ is a curious return, with its warm tones seeming to envelope you from every side. A tip of the cap to the titular Beatle, ‘Song For John Lennon’ oozes out of the speakers like aural honey; completely addictive.

ABJECTS – ” Never Give Up “

Abjects are a London-based trio, who are a walking celebration of the cities multi-cultural wonders. Composed of singer/guitarist Noemi from Spain, bassist Yuki from Japan and drummer Alice from Italy, the band are three citizens of the world, making joyous pop-songs with the arty edge you’d expect from a band who met while studying at Goldsmiths. This week the band have announced details of their debut album, “Never Give Up”, as well as sharing the rambunctious title track.

The track is a response to the complications thrown up by the rise of nationalistic, populist politics, and how sometimes, you just have to ignore them, “life is full of problems and obstacles, but we’re never going to give up having fun and living our lives the way we want”.

The track bounds in on a snare drum, so energetic that it seems to almost be jumping out of its stand, as Sleater Kinney-like guitar riffing, and shout-along Hinds-like vocals add some melodic to flare to the mix. Abjects are a band who look at the world’s problems and seem to refuse to be broken by them, their own kind of joyous, celebratory, revolution; if you can’t beat them, dance at them!

“Never Give Up” is out February 15th on Yipee Ki Yay.

This industrial noise punk duo are flanked by a group of people in Hazmat suits as they play (really loud) space anthems akin to Death From Above, The Chemical Brothers and Nine Inch Nails. Their live shows are like the soundtrack to the end of the world, offering a weirdly upbeat and eccentric experience that is a chaotic, but always enjoyable, assault on the eyes and ears.

SEA GIRLS – ” Lost “

Having gained a reputation for their frantic live performances and epic guitar rock sound, Sea Girls have been plying their trade throughout 2018 and released their latest single All I Want To Hear You Say in September. They head out on a major headline tour at the end of February 2019 – but you can get a taste of their amazing live show with this exclusive clip, showcasing the band’s appearances with appearances at Truck, Citadel, All Points East and Leeds festivals across the summer.

This London four-piece spent their summer building a fanbase at festivals around the UK. While the music industry hasn’t been so kind to rock bands over the past few years, the tides (geddit) seem to be turning, and it’s about time we had some new blood on the scene. Sea Girls are offering listeners a fresh, uplifting and bold guitar-based sound that capture the spirit of youth.

CHILDS POSE – ” Child’s Pose ” EP

This London band just missed our list of the best EPs of 2018 with their 7” on Nervous Energy, but they’re working on a 2019 release (maybe an EP, maybe an LP) for Thrilling Living that’s at the top of my list of stuff to buy this new year. They’ve shown fantastic taste and craft on songs like “Feral” and “CCMMD,” demanding comparisons to stalwarts of the post punk canon, but with the bonus of their stuff being fresh and current and not 40-year-old records made by 60-year-old men. On that EP you can hear the economy of Wire, the directness of Kleenex / LiLiPuT, the tunefulness and fury of early Iceage (yes, we know New Brigade is from this decade and not the ’70s), and all kinds of other properties from all kinds of other rad bands that rad record collectors are into.

Child’s Pose are bridge-builders, helping to close the gap between the hungry kids of today and their weirdo aunts and uncles.

Sports Team

Harlsden’s Sports Team released their debut EP “Winter Nets” in January 2018 and have since been building up a word-of-mouth buzz across the year, supporting The Magic Gang, Hinds and Rat Boy. Their recent single, Margate, was recorded with Courtney Barnett and they have a stack of live dates lined up for 2019, including a show at London’s Electric Ballroom on 22nd March.

DOE – ” Grow into It ” Best Albums Of 2018

Two years after delivering the astonishing “Some Things Last Longer than You,” London based trio Doe returns with “Grow Into It,” in which Nicola Leel, Jake Popyura and Dean Smithers drop another set of Breeders/Weezer-influenced rock. They still don’t have a bassist and don’t seem to need one, as their double-guitar attack really does the job. The surprising sonic explosions and fits of chaos suggest that they may be taking cues from “Pinkerton,” and yet songs like the bouncy “Labour Like I Do,” the pensive “Team Spirit,” and single-ready fuzz-ballad, “Cathy” rank among their best work.

HUSKY LOOPS – ” Everytime I Run “

Husky Loops‘ experimental-rock sound sounds so familiar, yet it is also very much different to what you have heard before. The Italian-London based trio’s 2018 EP, Spool, has been very well received with the energetic track, “Everytime I Run”, getting a spot on the FIFA 19 soundtrack.

With a place on the SXSW 2019 line-up wrapped up, this next year should be a big one for the band, as they look to establish their name across the pond. They’ve got the sound and attitude to make it big, and their shows in smaller-capped venues are doing well. Maybe 2019 will finally be the year that Pier Danio Forni, Pietro Garrone, and Tommaso Medica explode and be one of indie’s breakout bands.
