On the 14th February 1970, The Who appeared at the University Refectory at University of Leeds  England. The show was recorded for the bands forthcoming ‘Live At Leeds’ album. Since its initial reception, Live at Leeds has been cited by several music critics as the best live rock recording of all time. The University of Leeds refectory, has now been named a national landmark in the UK, commemorated with a blue plaque. It was the only live album that was released while the group were still actively recording and performing with their best known line-up of Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon.

Two shows were consequently scheduled, one at the University of Leeds and the other in Hull, for the express purpose of recording and releasing a live album. The Leeds concert was booked and arranged by Simon Brogan who later became an assistant manager on tour with Jethro Tull. The shows were performed on 14th February 1970 at Leeds and on 15th February 1970 at Hull, but technical problems with the recordings from the Hull gig — the bass guitar had not been recorded on some of the songs — made it all the more necessary for the show from the 14th to be released as the album.

Live at Leeds has been cited as the best live rock recording of all time, Recorded at Leeds University on 14th February 1970 on Pye Mobile Unit.

THE WHO - LIVE AT LEEDS 1970

Come the early May Bank Holiday weekend next year, Live at Leeds will be celebrating its 10th anniversary. And looking ahead to what promises to be its biggest and best event yet, the award winning metropolitan festival has just announced the first seven acts who will be appearing in 2016.

With two solo No. 1 singles and a high-flying debut album already to her name, Jess Glynne is quickly establishing herself as a bona fide pop star. Joining her at Live at Leeds will be the American indie-rockers We Are Scientists, Circa Waves from Liverpool and the Southampton rock trio Band of Skulls.

Staying true to its ethos of promoting emerging talent alongside more established national and international names, Live at Leeds will next year also bring us Rat Boy, Clean Cut Kid and Barns Courtney. Many more exciting acts will be announced in the weeks and months ahead.

When the full list is complete, and based upon last year’s festival, Live at Leeds will be hosting some 200 acts at 20 venues dotted across the length and breadth of this great West Yorkshire city.

In other news, Live at Leeds reveals it will be bringing a brand new digital programme to the event. Working in partnership with the Leeds Digital Festival this separately ticketed event will take place in the five days prior to the music (25th – 29th April).

Tickets, which are already flying out of the door, are available at Tier one prices until the end of the year. Priced at £30 + booking fee (for Saturday’s main wristbanded event), they can be purchased here

Physical tickets can be bought from Jumbo Records, Crash Records and more.

The main live music programme at Live at Leeds 2016 will be held on Saturday 30th April. Additional information about the festival can be found on the official website

This weekend I shall be in Leeds again for the Live at Leeds event, so to get ourselves  so excited about the band Yak here they take today’s Track of the Day slot.

The first song released from their forthcoming EP ‘Plastic People’ Yak are starting to hit all the notes we said they could as they live up to the hype and murder the naysayers. ‘Smile’  Catalogue Yak next to Fat White Family but be careful, with that much grease, scuzz and electricity in one area you are bound to have a fire hazard.

‘Smile’ is a slithering sex-pest of a song as it snakes its way across the glass-shimmering dance-floor it reeks of cheap aftershave and the underlying stench of fear permeates the air. It then delivers like a blast of noise that would leave a pensioner in piss as we all gathered round to watch. Check their tour dates here

09/04 London, Heaven (w/ Superfood)

Back for its ninth annual outing, Live at Leeds assumes its customary position over the early May bank holiday weekend. Buoyed by the success of having bagged last year’s coveted ‘Best Metropolitan Festival’ award, this time around it promises two hundred bands, twenty venues and one wristband – all for the unbeatable value of £27.

Live at Leeds has built a strong reputation upon an ethos of promoting local talent alongside more established national and international artists, whilst also being one of the very best places at which to catch the year’s breakthrough acts.

The festival has today revealed its venues and scheduling for the event that this year falls on May 1st. .

EagullsHookwormsCarl BaratTobias Jesso JrTelegram and Meance Beach to name a handful will be in attendance. Add to that the plethora of bands who will be adorning your favourite magazines and site (ahem!) next year and the heart skips a beat.

The-Who-Live-at-Leeds

Rock history took place on a university campus on this day 45 years ago. It may have been Valentine’s Day, but that was of little consequence when one of the UK’s greatest-ever rock bands took to the stage of the refectory of the University of Leeds. February 14, 1970 was the night that The Who recorded the performance that became their first live LP, described on release by the New York Times as the “best live rock album ever made,” ‘Live At Leeds.’

University gigs and tours have always been a common part of the British live music circuit, although the Leeds campus was not one of the most regularly used. The Moody Blues played there, for example, during their early days as a rhythm and blues combo, in 1965, but it was one night with The Who that brought it to prominence. Two weeks later, Pink Floyd performed there; The Who returned to the venue later in the year, as did Floyd in 1971. Then the Rolling Stones also included it on the ‘Goodbye Britain’ tour that preceded their departure for tax exile status and the ‘Exile On Main St.’ album.

The Who’s already outstanding reputation as a live band in 1970 had been further enhanced by their appearance the previous summer at Woodstock. Their live set was now a fascinating mixture of their early mod days of R&B covers and material that had added to their growing status as exponents of conceptual rock.

Thus they delivered a set to the Leeds audience that still included their cover of Benny Spellman’s ‘Fortune Teller,’ as well as Mose Allison’s ‘Young Man Blues’ and Sonny Boy Williamson’s ‘Eyesight To The Blind.’ But it also featured early hits like ‘I Can’t Explain’ and ‘Happy Jack,’ as well as an extensive run through Pete Townshend’s new ‘Tommy’ opus. A medley at the end featured ‘My Generation,’ ‘Magic Bus’ and others.

Later in 1970, Roger Daltrey told the weekly music paper Sounds that he was very happy with the album. “It was one show and it was a very valid bit of plastic, you know. There was hardly anything dubbed on it – there were more things taken off than put on. Two backing voices were added, but that was only because the mike fell over. The whole thing is as it happened. We even pulled a lot of the crowd out because it was like, distracting to listen to.”

The ‘Live At Leeds’ album was released in May and made the top five in both the UK and US. In 2012, Who devotees finally had the chance to buy the recording of the band’s next gig, 24 hours after Leeds, on the ‘Live At Hull’ set. The Who had always intended to record this show to gather material for the original album, but sound problems meant that unless they were there at the time, fans had to wait more than 40 years to hear it.

The line-up’s been announced for this year’s Live at Leeds, taking place 1st-4th May 2015. With the all-day music event running on 2nd May 2015, big names have been confirmed in the shape of local heroes Hookworms and EagullsTobias Jesso Jr. and Oceaán are also on the bill, with Swim Deep – finishing off their second record, due out this year – also set to play.

The first big names to catch the eye include Carl Barat & The Jackals – whose debut album Let It Reign is due to drop in a fortnight’s time – London’s much heralded bucolic folk rockers Dry The River; those art-rock cerebralists Dutch Uncles; Thurston Moore and another man with an illustrious past, the former Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes,; as well as Leeds’ very own noise merchants Eagulls and their fellow Leodians the mighty Hookworms, all of whom affirm the festival’s core principle for promoting local talent alongside established international acts

An quite wonderful looking undercard already boasts garage rockers Slaves – who will be in Leeds later this month on the NME Awards Tour – rising pop quartet Lawson, the Grammy nominated singer and producer MNEK, the electric fuzz-pop of Cardiff’s Joanna Gruesome, indie-rockersSpector and MOBO Award winner Stormzy
