The White Stripes have shared the full version of their “From The Basement” performance from 2005 for the first time, Created by Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, the web TV series ran between 2007 and 2009 and saw The White Stripes and Thom Yorke perform during its pilot episode.

Originally recorded in November 2005 at Maida Vale Studios in London, this is the first time that The White Stripes’ entire “From The Basement” performance – as well as “exclusive, never-before-seen B-roll from the session” – has been available to watch in full. The White Stripes played such tracks as ‘Blue Orchid’, ‘Forever for Her (Is Over for Me)’ and ‘As Ugly As I Seem’ during their performance, while they also covered Captain Beefheart’s ‘Party of Special Things to Do’.

“The dream of From the Basement is to capture great performances with the most direct and beautiful coverage possible, both sonically and visually,” Godrich said in a statement. “We were so fortunate early on to have the support of Jack and Meg who instinctively understood the concept of the show and so came to be part of it.

“As a result, we have this amazing snapshot of their fantastic energy and style. It’s an intimate and direct performance, something magic, powerful and special. A day I will not forget.”

Director Sophie Muller said: “Everything fell into place very quickly, and because of Meg and Jack’s ease and natural chemistry with each other I could just shoot what I saw. Whatever it was between them made it very simple, but so, so special and it was an honour to be there. I just love this electrifying performance.”

Jack White added: “It was beautifully filmed and the sound quality makes a performance on a regular TV show sound like a wax cylinder recording. No host. Thank God.”

The From The Basement footage is the latest in a series of archive performances that The White Stripes have shared with their fans over the past six months.

The White Stripes’ full set from Episode 1 of “From The Basement”. Originally broadcast in November 2005, this is the first time the entire performance has been made available in full, along with exclusive, never-before-seen B-roll from the session.

Here lies the website of From the Basement – A sort of music show / labour of love produced by a small group of dedicated individuals and with the sound produced by me.

The whole emphasis of the show is about being artist friendly and making our bands as comfortable as possible so that they can give great performances without the usual agony of TV promo which everyone has to do but no one seems to enjoy. TV world is a pretty hostile environment for your average musician to have to walk into and bare his soul on cue.. It also doesn’t hurt that a lot of the people we’ve filmed are friends or people we’ve worked with before so they trust us and know that we understand what recording music is about as well as making good TV.

All in all I think it all adds up to something unique and special which I don’t feel happening anywhere else in either the music side of mainstream TV or online.

My own personal goal is that in the future some of these performances might be seen as the truest representation of the state of their artists work, captured in a way that lets their talents speak without the interference of presenters, or audiences. That is what I feel when I watch Talking Heads or Bill Withers on the Old Grey Whistle Test, that they are most definitely playing for me, not someone else in the room. If we can even touch on that kind of directness and quality then I think the whole project will have been a success.

The New York trio have made quite a splash this year with their effervescent mix of 90s indie (grunge rock and something more ethereal) and 60s psychedelia. As songs from their debut album, Human Ceremony, veer off into cosmic jams, they sound like an unlikely mix of celestial 90s indie kids Lush and summer of love-era Jefferson Airplane.

Much of the former comes from lead vocalist/bassist Julia Cumming, whose ferocious performance contrasts with the pastoral sweetness of her singing. Guitarist Nick Kivlen – all curly moptop and patterned shirts could have stepped straight from a 60s .

With drummer Jacob Faber thrashing away behind, this threesome make a spectacle as Cumming prowls around her bandmate, grins at the crowd and often leaps into the throng while playing. “This is such fun,” she yells as their set flits from the beautiful guitar shapes of Human Ceremony . Check out their Limited Edition 12″ of covers now only available at their gig I’m afraid.
