Old Blood

This Southern California-based doom-psych quintet has been garnering major raves from the metal blogosphere thanks to their newly released self-titled debut. The primal punch and serpentine swirl of the band’s guitar-bass-organ-drum attack mesh beautifully with the commanding clean vocals of vocalist Feathers, whose jazz- and blues-influenced stylings soar above the crunch. And this is all before you attend their theatrical live show that includes smoke machines, psychedelic projections and a pair of corpse-painted dancers – the Rigormortettes – who perform ribbon and hula-hoop routines before ritually “killing” Feathers at the end of it.

They Say: “People have said our live shows are like being on a drug trip without any drugs actually being involved,” laughs bassist and co-founder Octopus. “Audiences don’t know what to expect, but they love it; we often leave them with their mouths hanging open. But it’s been kind of interesting trying to book the band, because we’re so different.

“We wanted to have that sense of a fourth wall, that sense of theater and mystery. There’s no mystery with so many doom and stoner bands; it’s like, ‘That dude looks like the guy who works on your car!’ Which is cool, and we respect that; but at the same time, we feel like some of the genre has become derivative, and we wanted to stake out some new territory. We absolutely are part of the stoner/doom world – but when you’re stoned, sometimes you see things differently!”

Hear for Yourself: A fuzzed-out journey to the center of the psyche, “Glowplug” – from the band’s self-titled debut – impressively showcases Old Blood’s power.

OLD BLOOD is:
Feathers – Vocals
Diesel – Drums
Gunner – Guitar
Octopus – Bass
Stone – Keyboards

And The Rigomortettes: Cutter and Hoops

Those that have followed her ascendance through the blogosphere so far will recognise the title track, but to commemorate this EP announcement it’s now complete with an accompanying video trailing her mountaintop journey through local idyls. Never Going Home is the title track and first single from the new EP

Los Angeles’s band Valley Queen are releasing the “In My Place” b/w “High Expectations” single this Friday (8/12) via Canvas club Records. Singer Natalie Carol has a real powerful voice, and the band’s folk pop has gained comparisons to Fleetwood Mac, Florence Welch, and others. If you like those, you may dig Valley Queen too. “In My Place” hit the web recently, and we’re also premiering the track “High Expectations” in this post. Listen to both, and checkout the band’s NPR Tiny Desk Concert, in a earlier post. Their debut album is on the way too.

Really pretty and trippy new song from the Cosmonauts. I really love that ascending guitar part that repeats in the beginning and then the spacey effects laden, what I’m assuming is a guitar, part adding atmospheric textures to the song. Feels like a song you play when you’re the passenger in a car going down a desolate desert road while staring out the window watching the landscape pass you by. Have a listen below.

Snowball II is a shoegaze band from Los Angeles. Sophomore album “Doughnut Holes” out 9/16.

Snowball II is pretty new band, actually—at least the name is. Jackson Wargo has been putting out music written under other monikers for a few years now. There were no set band members or anything, usually just people I could round up to play on a recording or at a particular show. Nothing was really catching on, and it all started to feel pretty stale, so I wanted to re-brand everything. I’d already recorded the album we’re about to put out when I decided to do that, but I felt like this record would open up a cool new chapter for my “band,” so I got the name and called everyone I knew within 50 miles until I found some people who knew what shoegaze was and were open to rehearsing more than once a week.

Oakland’s Happy Diving make the kind of catchy, riffy sludge pop that should appeal to fans of Dinosaur Jr or Torche, or a newer band like California X. They’ve been around for a few years, with a album and a EP release under their belts, and they’re set to release their second album titled “Electric Soul Unity” on August 19th via Topshelf Records. We’ve got the chance to hear  “Don’t Be Afraid Of Love” from that album, which you can listen to below.

Ever since the band’s scintillating debut, they’ve been making frequent appearances on year-end lists from the Music Blogs and more importantly  growing sharper with each successive release. Recently, there was a post that spotlighted “Holy Ground” a towering  single from the band’s forthcoming , “Electric Soul Unity”. Opening with “Bigger World”  a winking nod towards their outstanding debut album. The band makes no bones about the fact that they’ve dramatically increased the size of their scope. Everything from the production to the songwriting indicates the band’s set loftier goals for themselves from the very outset of this record. It’s an extraordinary effort from a band that’s more than ready to take on any challengers and it won’t go down without putting up an unforgettable fight.

Pass me my car keys as I’m getting in my top-down convertible-that-I-don’t-own and driving to the beach right NOW.This  Californian four-piece Transviolet bring all of the summer vibes on their latest single, “LA Love.” A sun-kissed electro-pop gem that hears leading lady Sarah McTaggart singing about her love-hate relationship with Los Angeles, this song is an essential addition to your road trip playlist this July.

Empty Cellar Records is stoked to announce the third full-length release by San Francisco’s Cool Ghouls, Animal Races. Fans of their self-titled debut and 2014’s A Swirling Fire Burning Through the Rye will be similarly stoked to hear how this band has continued to evolve. If the first album was a celebratory debut, and the second an earnest venture into deeper waters, this third album is like the crystal born of the murky womb that was the second record, fertilized by the initial intention of the first. Not only have the Cool Ghouls reaped the crop they sowed; they’ve baked it into some new kind of bread.

For the uninitiated – Cool Ghouls play rock’n’roll. That’s about all there is to it. They’re California natives. They try to do a good job. They like to try to elevate and get far out. They also like to keep it real. They like to make friends and have a good time. They don’t like bullshit. They want to keep growing and learning how to become more powerful musicians. This record reflects the discoveries they’ve made over the last five years about live performance, themselves, and each other.

The eleven tracks, recorded to tape by Kelley Stoltz in his backyard studio and mixed by Mikey Young (Total Control etc.), are first and foremost documents of the four-piece’s live performance of the tunes. Many of the songs were road-tested, but – unlike the prior records – a few of them were not. This opened the door for some new looks: an acoustic guitar, some synth, upright piano, a little pedal steel wizardry from Tom Heyman, etc. It’s Cool Ghouls doing what they’ve always done, but in more ways and better.

Animal Races will be available on LP/CD (8/19) in the US via Empty Cellar Records and the EU/UK via Melodic Records; and also, on cassette via Burger Records. All versions feature full-color artwork painted by Shannon Shaw (Shannon and The Clams).

Emily Jane White is a musician, songwriter, and poet from Oakland, CA. She began performing under her own name in 2003 and released her first album “Dark Undercoat” in 2007, with “Victorian America”, “Ode to Sentience”, and “Blood/Lines” following. White has cultivated a dedicated audience in Europe and North America.
The title of Emily Jane White’s fifth album, “They Moved in Shadow All Together” (out in France & mainland Europe april 29th, 2016, England and North America, june 10th, 2016), is a play on the opening line from Cormac McCarthy’s novel “Outer Dark” which hauntingly depicts a group of uncanny travelers descending a hill in the Appalachian Mountains. Recorded at Tiny Telephone studio in San Francisco, CA, and New and Improved studio in Oakland, CA, between December 2013 and September 2015, the 11 songs focus conceptually upon the symptomatology of trauma, a pattern of experiences marked by a fragmentation of the self.
