Packed with nostalgia and an endlessly appealing 90s vibe, ‘Laserbeam’, the latest track from Brighton indie pop trio Phantom Runners, is the kind of track that makes you feel like you’re hazily floating through the sky in a state of bliss; exploring that every morning sunrise with an evening full of great memories replaying in your head.

Having enlisted the help of Fun Lovin’ Criminals’ Huey Morgan, ‘Laserbeam’ is a carefree gem that’s even more exemplified by Phantom Runners’ laid back songwriting process in which they just let the song come to them and then tidy it all up later.
The end result is a track that glides through with sunny guitar melodies and loose percussion and feels almost like 90s Ash at their most laid back. It’s a track that’s in no rush to go anywhere; meandering about, content in exploring these memories and just soaking in the atmosphere.

great escape

We are thrilled to announce the first 150 artists to join our 10th anniversary festival line-up including southern soul-rock quartet Alabama Shakes, the first Brighton Dome show artist to be announced. As one of the most anticipated artists in 2012, they played to just 400 people, the same year that they delivered their hit debut album ‘Boys & Girls‘. The band will triumphantly return in 2015 to bring their powerful live show to The Great Escape’s biggest stage.

The venues, churches, pubs, streets and bandstands that make up the 30+ venues in use across Brighton will be bursting with future sounds across every genre including experimental folk singer Soak, reflective LA-dwelling songwriter Tobias Jesso Jr., alt-punk BBC Sound of 2015 nominees Slaves, disarmingly emotive hip hop artist Loyle Carner and lovelorn electronic soul artist Dan Bodan.

Also amongst the first 150 artists joining the line-up today is North London’s dreamy electronic trio Real Lies, wistful and soaring melodies from Flo Morrisey, Brighton born producer and Chase & Status collaborator Louis Mttrs, futurist electropop from Jack Garratt, Winnipeg hip hop collective The Lytics, heavily textured synth soundscapes from Oceaan, Swedish pop-noir songstress Seinabo Sey, powerful evocative vocalist Laura Doggett, Essex teenage talent Rat Boy, Welsh indie-rock group Pretty Vicious, Swedish-American pop innovator Mapei, Dublin four-piece Girl Band, Malian desert punk band Songhoy Blues and, returning to the Great Escape after their legendary debut in 2012, London-based folktronica foursome Django Django.

Following last week’s announcement of the final 150 bands playing at TGE 2015 we have updated our highlights per day to include some of the new additions. The Cribs, Blanck Mass, Gaz Coombes, Queen Kwong, Tkay Maidza and Tropics are amongst these new artists.

Fear Of Men, who released their debut album Loom earlier this year, have put out a cover of Ty Segall’s “Sleeper,” from his 2013 album of the same name. The Brighton-based four-piece turns the hushed strumming of the original into a layered, sparkling dreamscape, with frontwoman Jess Weiss’ feathery vocals giving the song a softer touch.

IYES – ” Simmer “

Brighton duo IYES, since forming in 2012, have continued to astound the ears of pretty much every music blogger and journalist that have taken that one fateful listen to them. And their new offering ‘Simmer’ isn’t one to disrupt the enthralling power that they have over a listener, rather it’s more likely to swoop up a contented listener into a loved-up daze. Set to a simplistic guitar melody that with its pace, allows us to focus fully and satisfyingly on singer, Melis Soyaslanová’s stunning voice, teetering between a sincere vulnerability and elegant poise. Her voice can only stun and bewilder a listener. IYES are playing Hoxton Bar and Kitchen in London on 12th February 2015.

IYES has been impressing us since 2012 with their fresh blend of electronic and pop, but today, the Brighton-located duo proves that they can still amaze with no more than a guitar and their own voices. This live demo of theirs entitled “Simmer” might catch devout fans a bit off guard since their sound is typically filled with head-turning electronic production, but, again, the duo really establishes their talent by nailing the acoustic track.

Both Josh Christopher and Melis Soyaslanová contribute their voices to the song, although the latter takes the vocal spotlight as is usually the case. The rapid chords and gentle plucks contribute to the song’s stripped-down beauty, too, and if you’re one who enjoys acoustic-styled tracks, then you’ll certainly take to the one they’ve here provided. If you want to catch IYES live, they’re performing at the Hoxton Bar and Kitchen in London on the 12th of February. Also, they’re releasing their current single,Glow“, on March 1 via Sony UK,

The latter half of 2014 has seen Bess Atwell preparing her debut single, however it’s her healthy collection of bedroom demos on Soundcloud that have held us in baited breath. Timeless songs meet elements of Marika Hackman in Bess’ gorgeous folk breaths, including her outstanding covers, such as Paolo Nutini’s ‘Iron Sky’.

Bess Atwell is a 19 year old acoustic act formerly known as ‘Bessie’. Having gained a significant audience for her music online, the singer/songwriter and guitarist is now gigging frequently in London, building up a more local fan base. Her debut single ‘A Thousand Lovers’ is set for release early 2015.

That said, she’ll almost induce tears with her own beautiful ballads, regaling honest lyrics on ‘2014’ – “I don’t want to change, it’s alright; rather lose myself than fight” – not least during the reflective ‘2014’. Her “untitled” demo is exceptionally moving too, but be sure to tick off ‘One Last Word’ and ‘One Day’ as you explore her dreamy and beautiful back catalogue.

The debut from this Brighton band High Tyde EP and it’s a belter. Brighton’s High Tyde really step up their sound and find their feet. From supporting the likes of Eliza & The Bear, the band have gone from the easy listening of their early ska-inspired EPs, to a unique hallmark that captures the euphoric indie rock of Bombay Bicycle Club, with surfy and indie-pop influences. It results in a Two Door inspired wave of sound; drenched with irresistible guitar hooks and an overload of energy. Latest track ‘High Tyde’ is an essential in 2015 and sits well alongside the fierce riffs of‘Bicycle Trixx’, the pacy melodies in ‘Dream Fixx’ and the lighter trop-pop of ‘Karibu’.

Brighton based Rock ‘n’ Roll band Of Empires debut EP ‘Stranger Sensations’ out now! Download the full EP for FREE at ofempires.co.uk. these guys have already been shouted about by the likes of MTV as their brand new band for 2015 act so are heading into the year on a high note already. Can’t wait to see what they do this year.

“A slow and melancholic end to an epic, epic record. “A New Nature” is destined to become one of those records that folk could still be talking about in decades and it will probably sell as many copies this year as it does every year, for years and years to come. Taken from the album ‘A New Nature’ – released September 8th 2014.

A year ago, Gnarwolves thought things were going pretty well for the band. They’d played a few festivals, sold a few t-shirts. Their ‘Funemployed’ EP was causing ripples throughout the punk scene and word was spreading: this Brighton trio were ones to keep an eye on.

A lot can change in twelve months, and this three-piece can testify to that. Throughout 2014, they’ve skated their way into packed out rooms, managed to squeeze six shows into one weekend back in May and recorded and released their debut album all while endlessly touring the UK. Then there was their slot at this year’s Reading & Leeds Festival, where they opened up the Main Stage – complete with goofy smiles and a good dose of disbelief – and held the biggest gathering of their Gnarwolves CRU to date.

The Brighton-based band Of Empires have been given one of those end-of-year leg-ups to success as winners of MTV’s Brand New Unsigned contest. Their music is a bit glam, a bit Britpop, a bit Stones and a bit Monkeys. Of Empires might not be signed yet, but they would appear to have some weight behind them: they’ve been working with engineer Ben Thackeray (Oasis, Jamie Cullum) and mixmaster Jon Gray (The Kooks, Editors). It’s stomping, slow-motion riff-rock with snarling vocals and terrace-worthy choruses. check out the EP “Stranger Sensations” A 3-track mysticism pulsating in weighty blues rock, worthy of the Black Keys crown”  and after a first listen there is no doubt in my view this band is heading for success. The epitome of good old-fashion rock ‘n’ roll but with a current kick.
“The three-track EP, Stranger Sensations, manages to bring together the more traditional elements of early rock ‘n’ roll (just listen to those riffs) as well as managing to keep it sounding relatively now.
