Intimate, haunting, and swirling with atmospherics, Lowlakes’ music has a sense of the cinematic. Their marriage of shoegaze, alternative and dream-pop is dark with imagery of midnight, wintry landscapes- punctuated by bone-chilling waves of frontman Tom Snowdon’s voice. Originally hailing from Alice Springs in the central Australian desert, childhood friends Snowdon, Bill Guerin and Jack Talbot formed Lowlakes with Brent Monaghan in 2011 after relocating to Melbourne. Lowlakes made waves with the release of their 2012 eponymous EP, and after performing at the prestigious CMJ Music Festival in New York in October 2012, Lowlakes’ haunting sound is digging a footing all over.

GOOD MORNING – ” Shawcross ” EP
Posted: December 12, 2014 in MUSICTags: Australia, Good Morning, Melbourne, Shawcross EP
Good Morning delivering the goods from Melbourne are Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons of new band on the scene, Good Morning. With influences from your favourite psychedelic legends to early Mac DeMarco, to Beaches, the boys are creating what could be the next big wave of music in preparation for the hot Australian Summer. With the help of Solitaire Records who also represent I’lls, their seven-track EP was posted just six days ago and is already racking up a very healthy number of plays. Sporting an array of lazy bass-lines, jangly guitars and hazey vocals, the EP titled “Shawcross” is well worth a listen.
DICK DIVER – ” Waste The Alphabet “

At one point on Australian band Dick Diver‘s new song “Waste The Alphabet,” guitarist Alistair Mckay sings “Look in the mirror/ I can see China from here”, sounding charmed by his own cleverness. It’s this totally impossible idea but also the track’s most memorable line, delivered with a snarky ease over genteel guitars and a surf-indebted breeziness. “I wanted a bitchy, self indulgent narrator. The track, which Mckay co-wrote with Melbourne poet Michael Farrell, is off Dick Diver’s “Melbourne, Florida” LP, out March 6th via Chapter Music and March 10th via Trouble In Mind Records.
SAGAMORE – ” Longer ” EP
Posted: December 2, 2014 in MUSICTags: Australia, Longer EP, Melbourne, Sagamore
Sagamore I have good feelings towards this band – and generally anyone who thinks employing a horn section is worthwhile, Melbourne’s Sagamore are putting out their new EP, “Longer” – recorded over the span of a year between Christmas Hills, Thornbury and North Melbourne before being mastered by Lawrence Greenwood (Whitley) at his Hiss and Hum studio.
Sagamore aren’t changing any frontiers of sound – although but they seem a little more interested than the rest of jangle-gate. The interchangeable harmonies between Sam and Sophia are warm (‘You Can Take Me My Love’) and rhythms are replete with community hall dance moves from yesteryear (‘Iodine’, ‘Feelings’). Longer is sets off at a slower pace compared to the hook driven self-titled release. The band do edge on running bar chord devotionals and lyrical repetition into the ground, but lead Sam Cooper manages to deliver any leftover passiveness into a warmth only Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy could run off with.

The GOOD MORROWS – ” Spaceman “
Posted: December 1, 2014 in MUSICTags: Australia, Garage, Jarred Scopel, Melbourne, The Good Morrows
An exciting band from Melbourne, Australia, The Good Morrows.Hailing from Melbourne town, The Good Morrows is a quintet whose delectable fast-paced rock offerings represent the product of a concoction of youthful folly and a love of great music. Having individually meandered through the Melbourne music scene for a few years, and sharing an appreciation for all things garage lead to the creation of the band. Distinctly The Good Morrows’ knack of delivering an altogether spontaneous, yet meticulously measured platter of melody shines though in their debut single, ‘Je N’ai Rien A Dire’.
Returning from a European sojourn in early 2012, Jarred Scopel (Guitar/vocal), armed with a bevvy of recently penned tunes teamed up with some long-time muso friends to bring fire to a proverbial melting-pot of musical influences.
Scopel’s fondness of classic rock n’ roll shines through in his voice and lyrics. Joined by Andrew Plisi (Guitar/vocals), the pair share altogether apparent penchant for all sounds Stones, Dylan and flower punk. They’re also indebted to the likes of Black Lips, The Dandy Warhols and 13th Floor Elevators.
The experience of Steve Acott (Bass) and Liam Skoblar (Drums) represents a proverbial rock of Gibraltar driving home the seminal sound central to the band. Tim Bass (Tambourine), although being a classically trained flugel horn player, also stakes his claim with his markedly revival-rock diddlings.
TEENAGE MOTHERS – ” I Hate New York “
Posted: November 29, 2014 in MUSICTags: Australia, Melbourne, Teenage Mothers
The Teenage Mothers are from Melbourne, Australia. band members: Jackson Kay (lead vocals), Raph Brous (guitar, vocals), Vyv Lyde (bass), Troy Ramaekers (drums),Louis Constant (keyboard).
Teenage Mothers are a lively bunch. Jackson Kay got arrested when, on tour supporting M83, he inhaled nitrous oxide, back-flipped into the crowd and almost set the stage on fire, then proceeded to get into a fight with bouncers. The latter allegedly threw him outside and assaulted him, leading to several broken ribs (his) and the intervention of the police, 15 of them “violently arrested” the singer, handcuffed him and locked him up for the night. He was fined $500 for being “drunk on the street” and M83 decided to kick Teenage Mothers off the tour, not least because, according to the headliners, JK looked “like a junkie”
JK, who left school at 16 to become a professional skateboarder, is a self-styled political activist who spent two weeks sleeping at the Occupy Melbourne protest. The songs he has written for the band’s debut EP and forthcoming album – both produced by Jim Sclavunos, drummer for Grinderman / Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – are about “broken love, dead-end jobs, injustice, and kicking against the pricks”. Suddenly, the band seem less interesting than their exploits. Their guitarist and joint vocalist, for example, has just written a novel, I Am Max Lamm, detailing the adventures of the eponymous antihero who is “on the run from the internet sex scandal that has derailed his burgeoning tennis career” and flees to London, where he “accidentally kills a 15-year-old Pakistani boy who tries to mug him and inadvertently sets off the worst race riot in a generation”
ART OF SLEEPING – ” Above The Water “
Posted: November 29, 2014 in MUSICTags: Art of Sleeping, Australia, Brisbane, Indie
Melding strong instrumental hooks, ambient rhythmic textures and the prominent vocal strength of front man Caleb Hodges, Art of Sleeping’s live reputation in their hometown goes before them, resulting in an admirable and devoted following of fans via online networks. Both ‘Empty Hands’ and ‘Above the Water’ sees current, go-to producer, Yanto Browning (The Medics, Tara Simmons, The Jungle Giants, The Belligerents) take the helm as a first taste of their EP release planned for release before the end of the year
KING GIZZARD and the LIZARD WIZZARD – ” Slow Jam “
Posted: November 29, 2014 in MUSICTags: Australia, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizzard, Melbourne, Psychedelia
from their EPIC latest album “I’m in Your Mind Fuzz”, an instant classic. Melbourne-dwellers King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard not only hands down win the award for band name of the week, but their paisley-coloured psych is as pleasingly trippy as you’d expect from a bunch of reptilian magic-makers. The septet’s forthcoming fifth album ‘I’m In Your Mind Fuzz’, is a prime example. Part 60s jam, part Unknown Mortal Orchestra-style underwater vocal (with a fair heap of flute twiddling doused on top), it comes on like Foxygen,
‘I’m In Your Mind Fuzz’ hits shelves on December 1, while the band are heading to UK soil in November for two London shows. The first, at the Shacklewell Arms (November 10), is sold out but a second date at Hoxton Bar and Kitchen on November 24 has been added.
BLACK RYDER – ” To Never Know You “
Posted: November 28, 2014 in MUSICTags: Australia, The Black Ryder
Though technically just a singer-songwriter duo, Australia’s The Black Ryder make up their live band with guest artists from bands like Brian Jonestown Massacre, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Swervedriver. Their debut album, Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride, wanders from bending shoegaze riffage to thumping stoner rock reminiscent of The Black Angels. The standout track is the album’s opener, “To Never Know You”, which sounds just as much like a My Bloody Valentine track as its name would suggest.
