Algiers return in 2020 with their third album ‘There Is No Year’, which will be released January 17th on Matador Records. ‘There is No Year’ solidifies and expands upon the doom-laden soul of their foundation, toward an even more epic, genre-reformatting sound, one somehow suspended in the amber of “a different era,” as described by guitarist Lee Tesche.

The Dinked Edition comes in a mirrorboard sleeve with reversed colours. Pressed on gold coloured vinyl and includes exclusive bonus 7” featuring ‘Void’ and ‘Can The Sub_Bass Speak?’.

The self-titled debut record by Algiers definitely deserves attention from 2015, as it is one of the most intense and powerful records of that year. The experimental trio from Atlanta managed to combine post punk, soul, industrial sounds and gospel elements like for instance hums in a very ambitious way and they created a sinister and dark atmosphere throughout the 40min long album. It’s probably not one of these records that impress you at first listen as everything sounds very complex and uncommon – but it is undeniably worth a second listen.

What probably characterizes the band most is Franklin James Fishers infectious and outstanding voice – it is just impressive how it keeps all the influences together. Algiers is an exciting and challenging record, not only concerning the sound, also concerning the emotive and strong lyrics – A record of protest that deals with provocative  and political topics like racism. It’s out now via Matador Records.

“I heard someone say once that you don’t know what real power is until you’re on the wrong side of it,” Algiers front man Franklin Fisher has said about his band’s title track to the album The Underside of Power, came out on June 23rd via Matador Records. The psych-soul troubadours are mindful of privilege — who has it and who does not here, choosing to point out how the have-nots are particularly vulnerable to those in positions of authority. “I’ve seen the dead walk among the living,” Fisher sings against a stomping beat, reminding us to look beyond our individual and collective bubbles.

Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia and featuring former Bloc Party sticksman Mat Tong among their ranks, The Underside Of Power scored unanimous praise, Clash lauding the disc ‘It is one of the year’s very best albums, and sets out Algiers as one of the decade’s very best bands’.
Signed to US indie powerhouse Matador (Savages, Kurt Vile, Yo La Tengo), the LP was produced by Adrian Utley of cherished group influence Portishead.  Fronted by the stunning vocals of Franklin James Fisher, their lyrics draw inspiration from the present tumultuous age, the group’s music a dazzling combination of classic sixties soul and post-punk experimentation influenced by Afrobeat, Big Black, Public Image Limited and Nina Simone, alongside the film scores of John Carpenter and Wendy Carlos.
With the new album surely set to be a staple of the year end lists and a European stadium tour opening for Depeche Mode recently completed, 2017 is shaping up to be Algiers’ biggest year to date.

Algiers have had a hell of a couple of years. In 2015, they dropped a fiercely original debut album that found an uncharted sweet spot between industrial rhythm and noise, post-punk guitar skreeeee, and the smoldering intensity of Southern black gospel.

Wide acclaim, a few videos, and heavy touring followed, and the band’s core trio of singer/guitarist Franklin Fisher, bassist/synthesist Ryan Mahan, and guitarist Lee Tesche was augmented by touring (and now permanent) drummer Matt Tong, formerly of Bloc Party. In between all their rock labors, they wrote a second album, The Underside of Power, and WOW.

Though the new album isn’t due until June 23rd, the band released the first video from The Underside of Power —and it’s the album’s title track.

Algiers purveys a sound that, on paper, should not gel. As a fusion gospel and soul elements with the din of post-punk and clamorous industrial, the components should cleave against rather than complement one another. Yet by wrangling these disparate parts together, this trio of Atlanta natives crafts something wholly original. Steeped in atmosphere, the record sounds as though it was recorded in a haunted rock quarry or in the bowels of an abandoned factory. Vocalist/guitarist Franklin James Fisher’s delivery alternates from fire-spitting indignation to ghostly crooning, while guitarist Lee Tesche and bassist Ryan Mahan conjure all manner of spooky tones and textures. Politically-charged, challenging, and fearless, yet still groovy as hell, Algiers has made one of the best, most thoroughly captivating debuts of the year. Post-worldbeat” trio Algiers, who originally hail from the US’s muggy Deep South, have signed to Matador Records,they have announced a self-titled debut LP, and unveiled a fresh single.

“But She Was Not Flying” is a tormented slab of dark soul-rock; it’s a Southern Gothic death rattle, riddled with the possessed howls of lead singer Franklin James Fisher, warped gospel vox and rapture-inspired keys. It’s dramatic, horror-scorched and frighteningly fascinating. Algiers is a band of musicians born in Atlanta, Georgia, the rotten hub of the Ol’ American South, where W.E.B. Dubois once saw a riot goin’ on, and where the hell and highwater swirls ‘round to the knees.

Algiers will be released by Matador Records later this year.

Sixteen years after their last proper release, it seems more ludicrous than ever to lump the Afghan Whigs in with any grunge movement, surprising events that have helped define this band’s reunion. Never mind youthful energies — the Afghan Whigs have always pursued the kinds of qualities that needn’t necessarily diminish with age, like a visual flair courted both onstage and off , plus the iconic album covers for Congregation and Gentlemen.
