Levitation fest returns to Austin after two years off, happening April 26th – 29th at venues all over the downtown area. The festival has been releasing official mixtapes featuring music from this year’s artists. We’re premiering the second of those, which was put together by Al Lover, and features Oh Sees, Electric Wizard, Ministry, The Make-Up, Bedouine, Panda Bear, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Parquet Courts, Ariel Pink, Slowdive, Suuns, OM and lots more.

Image of Al Lover - Neuicide!

Limited to only 400 copies. Al Lover’s newest Single, “Neuicide!” is an obvious tip of the hat to two ground breaking bands that are ironically revered by today’s nostalgia-drenched underground music scene, German Kraut pioneers “Neu!” and New York Rockabilly Futurists “Suicide”. Taking the influence to an absurdist display of gratitude, Al Lover Channels (through his distorted lens) the locked groove and ethereal synth swaths of Neu! and the bruiting discord of Suicide. Combining them in varying degrees on each song, the result is two freaked out, a tonal sides of the same repetitive coin. Not quite remix, not quite cover version. The outcome of the project lies somewhere between the two as snarky allegory for today’s copy cat “throw back” music culture. What better way to comment on repetition then with repetition. Let the new man kill himself by worshiping the old god.

SEM Exclusive Video: Elephant Stone Premieres “Echo & The Machine” (Al Lover Remix)

Today, SEM proudly premieres the video for Al Lover’s remix of Elephant Stone’s “Echo & The Machine,” the third track on ES3PRMX, which comes out on 2nd June 2015. Al Lover does a psychedelic/break beat remix of Echo & The Machine from Elephant Stone’s The Three Poisons (2014).
Taken from ES3PRMX out June 2nd, 2015 on Burger Records (CASSETTE)/Elephants On Parade Records (DIGITAL)

ES3PRMX is an album of inventive remixes of songs from Elephant Stone’s critically-acclaimed 2014 album, The Three Poisons.

Montreal’s Elephant Stone was formed in 2009 by sitarist/bassist Rishi Dhir. As one of the most highly sought out sitar players in the international psych scene, he has recorded, performed and toured with Beck, the Black Angels, Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Horrors, and many more.

Elephant Stone has released two LPs, an EP, and has toured throughout North American and Europe. They have spear-headed the Hindie-Rock movement with their deft ability of weaving together rock’n’roll, Hindustani classical, and catchy-as-all-hell pop. Elephant Stone’s third full-length, The Three Poisons. Their strongest/grooviest release to date,  for now, enjoy Al Lover’s work and the video that accompanies it.

Austin’s Levitation Festival—formerly the Austin Psych Fest—is one of the gems in the Austin festival calendar. It brings big-name headliners in a low-pressure environment, and this year, with the fiftieth-anniversary reunion performance of the legendary psych-rock band the 13th Floor Elevators, it will be an international attraction.

But if you needed another reason to get excited about the festival, they’ve got an exclusive mixtape that blends the big names at the top of the bill—the Flaming Lips, Austin’s Black Angels, Mac Demarco—with some of the down-ticket acts fans may not know. “Since 2012, we’ve been commissioning San Francisco producer Al Lover to create mix tapes for our festival lineups, and they’re a great way to discover new music and bands on the lineup that you might not be familiar with,” said Rob Fitzpatrick of the Reverberation Appreciation Society, the record label behind the festival.

In short, Al Lover is a producer from San Francisco, but there’s more layers to his wall of sound then meets the ear. Over the last few years he has gained much notoriety for his melding of contemporary and past garage and psychedelic rock into harsh yet spacey abrasive beats. Influenced as much by The 13th Floor Elevators as DJ Shadow, Al Combines crunchy drums, shaky percussion, chopped samples and layers of textured effects to create an unexplored path for psychedelic music, offering an earthy and loose approach that sounds more like you’re listening to a DMT fueled psych band than a beat made on an MPC.
