Austin’s Levitation Festival—formerly the Austin Psych Fest—is one of the gems in the Austin festival calendar. It brings big-name headliners in a low-pressure environment, and this year, with the fiftieth-anniversary reunion performance of the legendary psych-rock band the 13th Floor Elevators, it will be an international attraction.

But if you needed another reason to get excited about the festival, they’ve got an exclusive mixtape that blends the big names at the top of the bill—the Flaming Lips, Austin’s Black Angels, Mac Demarco—with some of the down-ticket acts fans may not know. “Since 2012, we’ve been commissioning San Francisco producer Al Lover to create mix tapes for our festival lineups, and they’re a great way to discover new music and bands on the lineup that you might not be familiar with,” said Rob Fitzpatrick of the Reverberation Appreciation Society, the record label behind the festival.

Neil Young and Stephen Stills performed together on Saturday, April 25 at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles. They reunited on the Pantages stage a few miles east of their old stomping grounds Saturday night, delivering a short but powerful set to close out an autism benefit concert that also featured Steve Earle, Shawn Colvin and a raucous guitar auction won by Brad Pitt, whose $23,000 bid trumped that of auctioneer Jack Black and others to land him a Fender Stratocaster signed by all the performers.

Young, 69, and Stills, 70, played with chemistry and charisma, two Sixties legends who have somehow managed to reinvent themselves again and again, navigating the perils of rock stardom that felled so many of their contemporaries.
“We’ve been through some things together,” Young sang, opening the nine-song set with “Long May You Run,” the 1976 song from the short-lived Stills-Young Band. Young’s high tenor was strong, clear, melodic. Stills had more rasp in his voice, and those notes at the top of his range often proved elusive.

But when it came to their fretwork, both men were like old gunslingers showing the kids how it’s done — soloing frequently on songs that included their Buffalo Springfield hits “Mr. Soul,” “Bluebird” and “For What It’s Worth.”

Stephen Stills, widely regarded as a virtuoso, played ambitious solos with a deft precision. And yet it was Young, with his simpler runs, who more often hit the sonic peaks — summoning otherworldly growls, demons and shrieks from his battered black Les Paul. Young’s guitar vocabulary may not be extensive, but he’s hard to beat when it comes to playing with power and emotion.

Then there are the songs themselves. The lyrics these men wrote decades ago still have relevance today.

“For What It’s Worth,” a Stills song inspired by the Sunset Strip riots of 1966, might just as well have been written following the protests in Ferguson, Mo.

What a field day for the heat,
A thousand people … in the street,
Singing songs and carrying signs

The evening ended with all performers joining the stage to perform “Rockin’ in the Free World,” Young’s song that served as a bitter commentary on former President George H.W. Bush’s 1989 inaugural address and its “thousand points of light.”

Neil Young and Stephen Stills Light Up The Blues setlist:
1. Long May You Run (acoustic guitar)
2. Human Highway acoustic guitar)
3. I Don’t Know (acoustic guitar) [new Young song]
4. Virtual Here & Now (electric guitar) [new Stills song]
5. Don’t Want Lies (electric guitar)
6. For What It’s Worth (electric guitar)
7. Bluebird (electric guitar)
8. Mr. Soul (electric guitar)
9. Rockin’ In The Free World (electric guitar)

The pair reunited for a nine-song set as part of the third annual Light Up The Blues benefit concert in aid of autism. Neil and Stephen perform this classic tune as part of the Light Up the Blues – Autism Speaks benefit on April 25, 2015. Shot in HD from the balcony DFC with my Samsung WB250F, and authored by yours truly with 24-bit audio from my Sony PCM-M10(AT853 mics). The event was hosted by Stills and his wife Kristen, and also featured sets from Steve Earle and Shawn Colvin.

Grey Lantern are now veterans of Sounds From the Other City. Since their birth in 2010, they have made a name for themselves as a tour-de-force of a promotions team around Manchester, taking over many of Manchester’s finest venues in Soup Kitchen, Big Hands, Gullivers, Kraak and First Chop Brewing Arm.

The team are used to taking over interesting and out of the norm spaces and in 2015 alone they have brought the likes of Spectres, Hookworms, Vision Fortune and Hartheim (their debut headline show) to the city. Now the team turn their attentions to Sounds From the Other City, and their very special collaboration with Faux Discx at The Angel Centre, we caught up with main man Simon Catling to see what we can expect come May 3rd.

Sounds From The Other City // Sunday May 3rd 2015  // 3pm-4am // Various Venues // Chapel St // Salford.

Sounds From the Other City festival (SFTOC) is a celebration of new music and performance, uniting the cream of the national and international scene with some of the city’s finest independent promoters, collectives and club nights. Happening regularly on the May Day Bank Holiday each year along the Chapel St corridor of the historic city of Salford 2015 sees us enter our 11th year.

This year, we welcome back some of our favourite independent promoters like Now Wave, Hey! Manchester, Grey Lantern and film/music collective Video Jam, as well as new faces such as comedy & music pioneers Sham Bodie, party specialists Good Afternoon and the infamous SWAYS records. We’re venturing into some previously unused spaces (railway arches & new retail space at Vimto Gardens), sticking with long-time favourites (First Chop, The Angel Centre and, of course, Islington Mill ) and calling back to Arms at the Salford and Kings!

You can head over to the line-up page, to sample the sights and sounds that are appearing this year but, more so than most festivals, the real star of the show is the fabled Sounds atmosphere. And thats made by you. So abandon any previous plans and get yourself down to Chapel St on the May Day Bank Holiday.

Slaves: This Kent duo are already all over music TV and mainstream radio, which is refreshing considering their punk credentials (stand-up drumming, lyrics about running people over, Oi! tendencies). Dapper, jokey and uniquely British in a way that would impress anyone who knows their Billy Childish from Billy Fury, they’re only gonna get bigger…
