Ultimate Painting are members from Mazes and Veronica Falls. Ultimate Painting released the much adored debut album ‘Ultimate Painting’ last summer catch some of the tracks on my pages elsewhere. Ultimate Painting are now going to release another album this summer. Some of that album sounds like Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. Its a great album. Here’s the first single titled ” Break The Chain “. . If you like it you’ll probably like the whole album even more, taken from their forthcoming album “Green Lanes” – due out August 7th via Trouble In Mind Records

Ultimate Painting "Green Lanes"

“Green Lanes” will be the second album from London-based band Ultimate Painting. Formed as a loose collaboration by Jack Cooper (Mazes) & James Hoare (Veronica Falls) the project quickly turned into a full-fledged band in 2014 with the release of their s/t debut album on Trouble In Mind. That album received praise worldwide from NME, Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound & more & with “Green Lanes” the band is poised for more accolades. The album is focused & cohesive, the result of two voices becoming one and each member’s songs complimenting the other, carving out a distinct & unified voice as Ultimate Painting.

Slinking out of the gate, the first song “Kodiak” is an hummable future-classic with Cooper & Hoare’s guitars dancing around each other with ease. The licks & lyrics conjuring up images of Sixties California & Seventies New York; a picture of dark clouds on a sunny day. The rest of the album follows suit with the airy, lush harmonies of “Sweet Chris” & “Two From The Vault” and even kicks up some dust with the chooglin’ “(I’ve Got The) Sanctioned Blues” and the manic ”Woken By Noises”. While their s/t debut was all Cooper & Hoare, this time out, they are augmented by the addition of their live drummer Neil Robinson who provides propulsion on all but one of “Green Lanes”s tracks. The album artwork was once again provided by Portland artist Bradley Kerl, who portrayed Hoare’s London flat & recording space chock full of the equipment used to record both the band’s albums casually tumbling toward the viewer.

2015 sees the band hitting the road again, with appearances at UK & European Festivals as well as a full US Tour in the fall in support of “Green Lanes”

Ultimate Painting

The UK group Ultimate Painting and Australia’s Twerps are in NYC currently and are playing two shows this weekend: March 13th at Rough Trade and March 14th at The Mercury Lounge. .

Last night Ultimate Painting played a surprise, late night show at Elvis Guesthouse which is quickly becoming the place for secret squirrel activity. Their 40-minute set included a lot of last year’s self-titled debut, plus two songs from their next album which is currently being mastered by Total Control’s Mikey Young for release on Trouble in Mind Records  later this year.  James Haore and Jack Cooper’s VU/Dead-style guitar interplay comes off even better live than on record, and their rhythm section  with Jack’s Mazes bandmate Neil Robinson and CoCoComa’s Anthony Cozzi on bass) is tight.

Ultimate Painting’s wonderful new single “Riverside,” as taken from their 2014 debut self-titled album,  It’s a fabulous tune and a definite winner on anyone’s playlist. Performed by a new English duo Ultimate Painting  and “Riverside” (Trouble in Mind Records) caught me by surprise with its haunting, jangly, flowing melody. There’s a definite amalgam of the Beatles meets the Velvet Underground, with a Village Green-era of The Kinks influence happening here as well.

Ultimate Painting’s “Riverside” is one of those songs which drift slowly into your head, and it’s hard to resist a replay. I can see this superbly home-recorded track being played in the spring and summertime as well.

Ultimate Painting would do better to head in the direction of this song in particular for the recording of their already-in-progress second album, versus staying in the alternative rock/strictly Velvet Underground direction of their debut. Check out the wonderful music video created for “Riverside” from an old Super 8 family film, something that will bring back good memories of childhood for many.

At one point on Australian band Dick Diver‘s new song “Waste The Alphabet,” guitarist Alistair Mckay sings “Look in the mirror/ I can see China from here”, sounding charmed by his own cleverness. It’s this totally impossible idea but also the track’s most memorable line, delivered with a snarky ease over genteel guitars and a surf-indebted breeziness. “I wanted a bitchy, self indulgent narrator.  The track, which Mckay co-wrote with Melbourne poet Michael Farrell, is off Dick Diver’s “Melbourne, Florida” LP, out March 6th via Chapter Music and March 10th via Trouble In Mind Records.
