The Jesus and Mary Chain performed with Sky Ferreira on US TV’s The Late Show With Stephen Colbert last night (May 16th). Ferreira joined the Scottish band for a rendition of ‘The Two Of Us’ from the band’s recent comeback album ‘Damage And Joy’.
The singer doesn’t actually feature on the album version of the track, which instead features vocals from former Belle& Sebastian member Isobel Campbell. Sky Ferreira instead appears on another track on the LP, titled ‘Black and Blues’.

The Jesus and Mary Chain recently released a new album Damage and Joy, their first since 1998’s Munki.
Now they have shared the trippy new visuals for their new single, ‘Mood Rider’ a laconic, dreamy song which lays off the searing feedback in favour of a more pop sound. It’s a great song, and proves the brothers Reid have still got it.
“The interesting thing about this record is what comes out of the speakers”, said Jim Reid. “To make a good record is an achievement if you’re twenty-two, but to do it in your fifties, the way we are, I think is a minor miracle.”

Listening to the Jesus and Mary Chain’s first album of new material in 19 years is like meeting up with an incorrigible old friend. Maybe there are a few more wrinkles and grey hairs but the original spirit is most definitely still there. Fuzzy, distorted guitars and a gallows humour may still predominate but maybe there is now also a certain maturity in the mix. Produced by Youth and featuring vocal contributions from Sky Ferreira, Isobel Campbell,Linda Reid and Bernadette Denning, as well as including a number of tunes that have been previously aired on Jim Reid solo projects, “Damage and Joy” sounds remarkably coherent and is a triumphant return to the fray.
There is always a slight nervy feeling when your favourite bands get back together and, given that the Reid Brothers’ long-standing assertions that it was never going to happen, but playing Damage and Joy for the first time is no different. However, by kicking off with waves of distorted guitar and the tambourine and drum machine-driven “Amputation”, the Mary Chain grab things by the scruff of the neck straightaway. Damage and Joy is no one-note wonder though, and sweet duets like “Always Sad” and “The Two of Us” and the down tempo track “Loz Feliz” add plenty of variety to the proceedings.
Nevertheless, it is the scuzzy rock’n’roll tracks like “Facing up to the Facts” and “Get on Home” where Jim declares “I spent a night with a blow-up girl and some LSD”, that make it crystal clear that the band have hit the ground running and have a good deal more than paying the bills in mind.
It’s inherently unfair to compare an iconic band’s most seminal work to anything it might produce 20 years later. Artists are people Just Like Us, and their lives shift and adjust with good years and bad. The passage of time can and will ultimately translate into new sonic directions that may or may not resemble their initial output. Given that they have released nothing new in the last 18 years, it’s been rather hard to predict what The Jesus andMary Chain will sound like on their forthcoming album “Damage and Joy” Their first album since 1998. Still, with the release of another track “Always Sad,” the second single from the album, it’s fair to say that they are still very punk rock.

One of the most influential bands ever to come out of the UK, The Jesus & Mary Chain, recently announced they are ready to release their first new album in almost two decades next year. Their first piece of new music in a decade, a new single entitled ‘Amputation’.
Fans of the band will likely be struck by how similar in style and sound ‘Amputation’ is to the band’s early and mid-’90s, post-Psychocandy output. The song could pass for a cut off the band’s warmly received 1992 album, Honey’s Dead, with its walls of guitar noise paired with a mechanical-sounding drum loop.
Creation Records, the iconic UK label that signed the band in 1984 and put out their first single, Alan McGee, the band’s manager and the founder of Creation Records, said, “It’s a big deal! It’s unbelievable. They’ve just made an album and I’ve signed them to Warners!” “The Jesus AndMary Chain will be dropping their new record March 2017.. on Warners the label wrote. The band, who have not released an album since 1998’s Munki, have dubbed their first album in some 18 years Damage And Joy. .
Creation Records’ co-founder Alan McGee confirmed that the Scottish band will be releasing a new album in March 2017. His exact words were: “New album coming. It’s coming out end of next March. It’s kinda enormous!”
Jesus and Mary Chain put out several albums between its legendary debut album Psychocandy in 1985 and Munki in 1998. In 2003 JAMC released a “Live In Concert” on Strange Fruit, and just last year the band put out the “Barrowlands Live” , a document from November 2014 of the 30th anniversary Psychocandy tour.

The Jesus and Mary Chain‘s iconic Psychocandy celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. In its honor, the band embarked on a short run of UK showsat which they performed the album in full. The first of these dates took place last November at the Barrowlands Ballroom in Glasgow, and marked the band’s first live appearance since 2008. Now, the Jesus and Mary Chain continue their anniversary celebration with Live At Barrowlands, a 10” + LP + CD deluxe package featuring the concert in its entirety, along with a book, behind-the-scenes footage, interviews, and more. It arrives July 31 via Demon Records, with a CD-only version planned for later this year.
In addition to the live LP, Live at Barrowlandscomes packaged with a 40-page hardback book, as well as a CD loaded with the JAMC’s set, plus extra content (interviews, behind-the-scenes photos). The 10”, meanwhile, features an assortment of tracks (“April Skies”, “Head On”, “Reverence” engineered by legendary engineer Noel Summerville (My Bloody Valentine, The White Stripes).

Last December an 11xLP vinyl box set from the Jesus and Mary Chain was released through Demon Music Group, marking the band’s 30th anniversary, Along with all six of JAMC’s studio records, the set will collect a live album, a 2xLP set of BBC studio sessions, an LP of B-sides and rarities, a 32-page book of interviews and photos, and a poster.
All six of the Scottish noise pop legends’ studio LPs will be collected, remastered from original tapes, including 1985′s Psychocandy, 1987′s Darklands, 1989′s Automatic, 1992′s Honey’s Dead, 1994′s Stoned & Dethroned and 1998′s Munki. The included live album is 2003’s Live In Concert, recorded in 1992 and 1995, but on vinyl for the first time. The BBC Sessions 2xLP collects recordings from 1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1994, and 1998. Check out the complete tracklist here.
