Roadhouses are a Sydney based sedated rock trio. The trio have dropped their first single for the year and announced a duo of shows to celebrate their upcoming album.

Black Lights is taken from the outfit’s debut self-titled LP which is slated for release 18th May. The band will follow it up with two album launch shows in Melbourne and Sydney this June. The new tune is accompanied by a luscious music video, directed by local filmmaker Jeff Andersen Jnr.

Formed back in 2014, by guitarist and songwriter Yvonne Moxham asked Mess Hall drummer Cec Condon to join her for what was meant to be a one-off performance. The trio is now rounded out with the addition of bass player James Bellesini.

Their last offering, Drinkin’, should be available on the band’s forthcoming debut self-titled album, expected very soon in 2018

A three piece garage rock band from Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Australia .

If you haven’t caught a Crocodylus gig yet, you’re missing out. The garage rock three-piece are well known for a rambunctious, high-energy (and sweaty) live show, and it’s the reason the lads have been in high demand recently, touring non-stop all over the country since the release of their sophomore EP Christian Syrups.

Needless to say the guys are keen to recharge the batteries and are looking forward to having a tiny rest after their upcoming mini-tour to promote their latest single, the surf-punk 60’s flavoured banger ‘My Love.’

“We’ve been playing shows every weekend since late October last year, so it’s definitely good to take a month off. We wanna take the time and record some stuff,” drummer Mikel Salvador says.

A video for ‘My Love’ is on it’s way too, with the guys looking to once again collaborate with director of their ‘Sweaty Already’ video, Jamieson Kerr. While they’re holding onto some big ideas, the guys are more than capable of turning it on for the cameras with their instruments alone.

“We’ve had ideas for other videos and they just seem so far fetched. There was one about a lizard-girl,” singer Josh Williams says. “And we’re gonna need prosthetics, we’re gonna need makeup. And then all we do is show up with a camera to some place and we’re like, ‘Yeah, whatever, let’s just fucking record’,” adds Mikel.

Sons of the East is an indie-folk band from Sydney, Australia consisting of Jack Rollins, who once tamed an emu; Nic Johnston, the guy who is without a doubt the best at finding short cuts; and Dan Wallage, whose hair was once described by David Attenborough as ‘the single greatest organism to ever grace the earth’.

Forming in late 2011, these gentlemen have made their way around Australia, from Sydney’s best live music venues to a camel farm in Uluru. Their sound is a saucy, heterogeneous melting pot of diverse indie sounds and sundry folk melodies; a multifarious and motley mix of banjo, organ, piano, guitar, stirring harmonies and the occasional didgeridoo. The result is a modern, alternative folk sound that draws on truly eclectic influences from far and wide, but somehow winds up feeling like home.

Sons of the East pride themselves on their rowdy, raucous and oh so rambunctious live shows, working off what they call the ‘tear-jerkers’ and the ‘boot-stompers’. They’ve been doing this quite successfully, so much so that its gathered them local and international attention from radio stations, websites and blogs, and plenty of venues and festivals across Australia. The band recently signed with The Agency Group in North America will release their second EP in 2015.

Big Skies commands a strong presence. Following their post-punk roots, Mere Women build up to a four-piece incorporating thumping bass into the already strong ensemble; precise pulsating rhythms that are never predictable, hallowing synths and spiralling guitar echoing off the ceiling. Thematically, Amy Wilson draws from dated ideas of gender roles. During the title track, Wilson repeats in quick succession You’d better get a dog, girl’ linking to her first-hand experiences as a woman living regionally, receiving word that getting a dog and locking all doors will offer protection. Mere Women have presented a true statement piece in Big Skies; encapsulating the beauty, isolation and gendered perspective of the countryside – presented with pure urgency and hopefulness veiled beneath unsettling tones.

Stark acoustic rumblings and tales of yesteryear are brought to the forefront on Down The Unmarked Road, a joint collaboration between Peter Fenton (Crow) and Jamie Hutchings (Bluebottle Kiss/Infinity Broke) that feels like it has more in common with 70’s Dylan and Van Morrison than their individual projects. It is an album that conjures up Sydney’s Inner West and by extension, the rural outskirts of New South Wales.

Fenton and Hutchings spin yarns about solitary travels at dusk, nights out gallivanting on King Street, and abrupt endings that lead to hazy beginnings, which feel like they’re only still just occurring; all the while pointing out the nostalgia and the regret of it all. The album doesn’t just feel brooding however, songs like ‘Moller’ and ‘The Buyer Beware’ give the record momentous lifts with their presence. You can’t help but be drawn to the almost effortless approach that each song takes with the album feeling like it began with two friends sitting down with acoustic guitars to see what would transpire.

Sydney-based band Noire aka Jessica Mincher (vocals and synth) and Billy James (guitar). Following up their self-released EP Baby Blue in 2015, Noire have announced the release of their debut album ‘Some Kind of Blue’, Growing up in the small regional town of Gympie, QLD before moving to Sydney where they formed in 2014, Noire craft dark, melodic and tenderly sculptured pop songs that traverse shoegaze, reverb heavy blues and indie rock.

Citing inspiration from Air, Mazzy Star, David Lynch, Wim Wenders and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds‘Some Kind of Blue’ is a cinematic soundscape charting the fluidity of love and loneliness.

Noire’s patient guitar licks sound like you’ve just turned up in a 1950s western town that’s piecing itself back together after a shootout. The Sydney band’s ethereal vocals via lead singer Jessica Mincher, and effortless production and song arrangement make you want to just close your eyes, block out the world, and drift away for a few minutes.

Australia’s coolest group of guitar slingers Straight Arrows dropped a new 7″ on Spacecase Records for 2018. Two new guitar-driven garage bangers fill the grooves on this single, combining for nearly 5 minutes of pure, unadulterated rock and roll.

This single looks to be their first release on a US-based record label since their sophomore LP on Hozac Records. It’s a glorious return to form for the Sydney 4-piece, who never really lost their step anyway – they were just quiet all through 2017. But if this single is any indication, that’s all about to change…

“Out & Down” opens with a gritty guitar tangle, quickly creating that infectious element that always seems to spearhead any Straight Arrows material. Frontman Owen Penglis leads the way with his distinctly boyish snarl, complete with some distant vocal howling in the background. “Every day I worry what my life’s about,” he cries, and he’s certainly not alone. The second half of the track is splintered with some buzzy guitar soloing, laying down a perfectly chaotic finale to this energetic single.

B-side “Franchisee” is fast-paced cave stomper of sorts, driven by the steady pummel of the kick drum. Penglis sings as if he had dollar signs for eyes, imagining heavy pockets and a thick wallet from all his incoming cash. The bruising track follows through with its relentless attack for a full minute and a half, eventually burning out and coming to a screeching halt. There’s the lone formula of simplicity that they clung to for these two tracks, proving in only 5 minutes time that sometimes less truly is more.

In the end, the best news here is this all a precursor of things to come. Stay tuned to their pages and see what happens throughout the year for Straight Arrows.

Purplene - Purplene LP

This adventurous and brooding self-titled album by Sydney band Purplene is regarded by most as their definitive work, recorded by Steve Albini. A classic Australian record originally released 2004, finally now on vinyl and digital platforms.

This band should have been huge. Fantastic slo-core at times, post-punk, pre-emo. Fragile verses, and it gets sophisticatedly loud only at times where it should. Recorded by Mr. Albini. Sounds perfect.

Four kids from the Sydney & Melbourne. Bloods have been peddling their garage-punk-pop tunes since 2011, playing alongside bands like Dum Dum Girls, Redd Kross, DZ Deathrays & many others. Reminiscent of the energetic pop of The Go Go’s, ‘Feelings’ is a song that explores the complications of love. The brand new single is the title track of the band’s forthcoming sophomore album , teaming up with producer Shane Stoneback (M.I.A/Sleigh Bells/Fucked Up) once again, ‘Feelings’ is a continuation of the emotional journey set out by the previously bubbly love song ‘Bug Eyes’ and delves into what happens when the butterflies start to wear off and you’re in the throes of a brand new relationship. Singer MC says of writing the track:

“I had some serious writer’s-block and it had been about a year since I’d written any music, but I really wanted another song for the album we were working on. I started strumming and the song literally poured out of me. It was written in about an hour on a Wednesday night, I sent it to the band on the Thursday and by the Sunday we were recording it.

It’s about the complexities of new love when you’re trying to move on from a previous heartbreak and in that, not trying to rely on the new person to make you happy. So the chorus ‘Learning to be happy, without you’ refers to finding happiness beyond the pain of loss and the promise of the new, and learning to be happy on your own.”

Along with the release of this new single, Bloods are excited to announce that they’ve inked a deal with Share It Music, a US-based record label. Headed up by Sub Pop Records’ Cayle Sharratt, Share It Music is operated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organisation, splitting proceeds between artists, their chosen charity, and the label. Bloods have chosen to support the Australian-based Indigenous Literacy Foundation through this campaign.

With the band’s sophomore album Feelings due for global release in May this year, it’s set to be another (hopefully not emotional) roller coaster for team Bloods.

“They have a raw energy, emotion, and very hooky tunes, all anchored by Hannah Joy’s confident and soaring vocals.” Among Australia’s most exciting acts, the Sydney trio’s huge debut single ‘Edge of Town’ made a monumental impact. It’s emotional, evocative songwriting, and Hannah Joy’s unmatchable high notes still give me shivers. They doubled down on that introduction with a self-titled EP packed with heart-bursting alt-country tinged indie rock last year. It’s a cathartic, unstoppable rush, and the band’s first full-length is set to push them to even greater heights. You can just tell this is going to be something special
