Though recorded for the first time with an outside producer Rich Costey, the man who ramped-up Muse’s space-rock aspirations on ‘Black Holes & Revelations’ – ‘Our Love To Admire’ is not exactly a departure. Instead, the band’s third album plunges straight back into a world of brooding nighthawks, seedy streets and dark corners lit by violent neon blasts. It’s a captivating listen, According to band members, Our Love to Admire is more “expressive” than the group’s previous efforts.
US indie-rock band Interpol‘s 2007 album Our Love To Admire will be reissued for its tenth anniversary next month. The New York outfit’s third album (their first on a major label) has been remastered for this release (by Gavin Lurssen) and is being reissued as a 2LP+DVD package or a CD+DVD combo. A standalone gatefold 2LP, without the DVD, will also be available. The bonus DVD captures the band’s 12-song performance at the London Astoria on July 2, 2007. Some of this was included in the UK CD+DVD special edition issued late in 2007, although a fair few of the live performances in this new set are previously unreleased.
Interpol’s 2007 classic ‘Our Love To Admire’ is available once again. “The songs ripple with [New York City’s] energy,” said NME of the album, “enveloping atmospherics seep into the senses giving the everyday a film noir quality.”
Guitarist Daniel Kessler wrote, We had keyboards on from the start which we’ve never done before. It’s like a fifth member. There’s a lot more texture, and interesting sounds, there’s definitely progression and growth.
But listen more closely and subtle differences become apparent. The first album they’ve recorded in New York, at Electric Lady Studios and The Magic Shop Studios the songs ripple with the metroplis’ energy; ‘The Heinrich Maneuver’ swings with a hip-shaking urgency; ‘Mammoth’ pounds unrelentingly, but fosters a hopeful soul in its violent heart; the twitching ‘Who Do You Think’ urgently speeds through the empty streets.
Where the band have progressed is in song and album structure. Each track is a thoroughly enjoyable listen, The emotionally charged tracks, each leading from the last with fluidity and grace. Each instrument is now less obvious among the mix, facilitating a more grander sound (evident no more so than on epic album opener “Pioneer to the Falls”).
There are shades and depths too, ‘Rest My Chemistry’ is a stately mix of wisdom and regret, while touching closer ‘The Lighthouse’ finds Interpol sounding unexpectedly vulnerable and open.
But ‘Our Love To Admire’ finds its true strength as a whole. From its opening notes to its final breath, the album’s enveloping atmospherics seep into the senses, giving the everyday a film noir quality.
