DRUG CHURCH – ” Hygiene “

Back with their fourth album, the follow-up to their 2018 breakout “Cheer” and acclaimed 2021 “Tawny” EP. As previewed via singles “Million Miles of Fun,” “Detective Lieutenant,” “World Impact” and this week’s “Premium Offer,” “Hygiene” is heavy and hooky in equal measure, The two songs represent the essential tension between overt melody and visceral aggression that fuels Drug Church—the former pushing the band’s seamless blend of hardcore bite and massive, ’90s-indebted hooks to its most anthemic point, while the latter shows off a level of tunefulness never before seen in their catalogue as if Cogan and Galusha’s guitars and Kindlon’s vocals are two animals locking horns with ferocity. “There are things that you see coming / Rolling like slow-moving trains,” Kindlon barks over chainsaw guitars on “World Impact” “Hygiene” is one of those things, as is Drug Church’s continued presence at the crest of the melodic hardcore wave, alongside the Turnstiles and Fiddleheads of the world

Albany– and Los Angeles-based five-piece Drug Church are vocalist Patrick Kindlon, guitarists Nick Cogan and Cory Galusha, bassist Pat Wynne and drummer Chris Villeneuve

“Something often lost: Life is process, not product,” sings Patrick Kindlon on “Unlicensed Guidance Counselor,” perhaps the most poignant track on Cheer. Drug Church’s third album is a tribute to that “process.” Kindlon’s protagonists are studies in humanity, captured with a photographer’s eye, a poet’s ear, and a comic’s timing. The titular “Unlicensed” advisor offers “guidance” via hilarious/horrifying anecdotes as good as anything in Confederacy Of Dunces … mashed up with platitudes lifted from Dark Knight dialogue. It’s perfection: Kindlon is on some zen-master shit and his lessons are delivered over bangers indebted to Pixies, Fugazi, and countless other erstwhile bash-and-poppers largely lost to time. Such is life. Cherish the moments. Trust the process. Buy this product.
