Jack James is the voice, a slender boy from Texas with a penchant for glitter and Oscar Wilde, who came down from another planet to be the rock star of the future. David Strange is the sword, a grisled poet and carpenter who can build anything, writing sonnets and summoning demons on his guitar. Kemp is the brain, a crazed scientist who composes prog riffs and surrealist visuals, leading the three into the great abyss.

Gunpowder was invented for fireworks. A spectacle of beauty. But somewhere along the way it mutated into The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Suddenly a village idiot could obliterate a Samurai without getting close enough to smell his blood type. A lifetime of training felled by a trembling finger. Video killed the radio star, but who killed JFK? Pop culture popping a cap as incels pop pimples and Kendall Jenner proffers soda pop to angry mobs. Semi automatic, autoerotic. A Glock as reproductive organ that inseminates life in reverse. Rap, country, cop and anarchist alike can all agree on one thing: the gun as penis.

Musically, they gleefully crush the zeitgeist beneath their fashionable heels, opting for a mix of ’70s art-prog and sludge metal, as filtered through a more gothic sounding Smashing Pumpkins (trust us, you’ll get it when you listen to it). Singer Jack James’ ghostly falsetto only makes the proceedings all the more eerie and disconcerting.

Bassist/director/model/ennui-coordinator Charlotte Kemp Muhl (who is also in Ghost of a Sabre Tooth Tiger with Sean Lennon), enigmatically explains, “Crispr, gene drive, cosmetic surgery, eugenics, life extension, uploading consciousness to the cloud, bifurcation of those that can afford it and those that cannot…we are entering a post-flesh world. ‘DNA’ is about our severance with all that makes us human and entering the next phase of evolution, molding ourselves into digital Demi Gods with perfect silicone bodies. Would you make this Faustian deal with technology, or retreat to the forest…?”

Uni, the NYC-based psych band that includes David Strange and Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger’s Charlotte Kemp Muhl and new singer Jack James, have a new single: the heavy, big-riffed “Destroyer,” which comes with a phantasmagoric video full of freaky claymation and apocalyptic visions. The Band describes it like this:

“I write this letter from a fallout shelter below the wreckage of the earth in the year 2042. Some said it was the exploitation of the poor. The rich blamed the marxist revolt. Some say the feminists had turned their backs on the men, while others blamed toxic masculinity. Helter Skelter played its part. There were clashes of political ideology, religion, race and gender as well as environmental catastrophes. Hurricanes, draughts, earthquakes and wildfires ravaged the earth. Needless to say, the firmament didn’t hold and the nuclear war left nothing but ash. Now that humanity has been razed and only the mutants are left to wander, I reflect on what could have been different from within the walls of my concrete fortress, waiting for the rations to run out.

It was neither one of these factors nor all of them responsible for what happened. It was something older than the universe itself, embedded in every molecule exploded from the Big Bang and crawling as a single cell from the primordial sludge to the White House lawn. It lives inside all of us like reptilian DNA. It is dormant when ignored but spreads like fire when fed. It is a glutton and we willingly shoveled the fuel intoit’s filthy gullet, like a cordycep fungus controlling the brains of ants. It takes many forms but each are a manifestation of the single deadly entity. It is Destroyer.

“Destroyer” premiers here, you can watch it below.

Kemp, the brain of Uni!Nico Fuzz, the heart of Uni!...David Strange, the balls of Uni! They wore high heels embroidered with stars to elevate them above the filth the enemy had spread like fecal peanut butter on planet earth. Kemp was the half crazed Boudicca who piloted the spaceship with her Orpheus rock riffs and led their armies into battle. David Strange was the warrior poet who could build anything with his bare hands and write lyrics to mesmerize the harpies, while summoning the devil on his double neck. Nico had flowers in his hair and broken glass under his nails. He wanted to heal the tectonic plates and could speak to insects. He sung like Orpheus and had one foot in the underworld, one foot in the future. Those who heard their music saw through the neckties of lying politicians and the banality of modern pop stars, freeing themselves at last from a digital prison. So Uni was immediately black listed from the radio and issued a warrant for indecent exposure charges which forced them to go permanently underground. It’s unknown where or when Uni will strike again. They appear without warning and claim responsibility for miracles in the strangest corners of the world. The number of followers that Uni has is rumored to be growing although few will actually admit to being a follower of this controversial cult.

The Ghost of a Sabre Tooth Tiger

The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger is Sean Lennon and his girlfriend, the fashion model Charlotte Kemp Muhl. This song is an ode to the grandson of oil tycoon Paul Getty, who in 1973 was abducted for ransom by Italian kidnappers and had his ear cut off before his grandfather finally agreed to their demands. Paul III was permanently affected by the trauma and became a drug addict and later suffered a stroke, which rendered him speechless, nearly blind and partially paralyzed for the rest of his life.

Sean Lennon does currently resemble his father circa 1969. He and Charlotte Kemp Muhl have been songwriting partners (and also a couple) for six years, progressing from sweet acoustic sketches to the psych-rock of their current album, Midnight Sun, a big, crashy record that salutes Sgt Pepper and air-kisses the Flaming Lips.

With Muhl on bass and four capable, boho-looking utility players whipping up wigged-out guitar spirals and organ swirls, the GOASTT create a swampy, forceful sound. Lennon favours a mic that flattens and frazzles his voice.
